Aren't the PETA nutcases always going on and on how we don't need animal testing anymore? Maybe they should stump up and volunteer for these types of drug trials
I've worked for Banks, Airlines too The all had BIG iron in the server rooms
These people are not doing lots of hard calculations They are moving large amounts of data... Clock speed doesn't matter that much in these cases. I/O bandwidth is king for these applications
The fact that these machines are ULTRA reliable Is a really big deal for these companies. You can't just reboot you're entire banking platform to add disk or fix broken hardware.
Processing power just isn't the point in these cases
I completely agree. I've worked with SUN gear for many years and yes I've seen their gear fail. But then I've also seen many other vendors gear fail too.
The difference is that when one of my Sun servers blow a gasket, I call sun & depending on the service level I've bought I have an answer within the hour & an engineer on-site within 4. Actually these days I'm running silver support on most machines and platinum on only a couple. I think from memory 4 hour responce & parts and engineer next day. I have exactly the same server contract with HP. When my two production HP servers blew up They told me it would take 2 WEEKS for the parts to arrive. I had to argue with them to even get an engineer on-site!
I remember the cache problem that Sun had. They caught a lot of flak over that one. They seemed to have learned their lesson:)
Maybe I've been lucky, but Sun support has always been top notch. HP's support so far has sucked. I've never had to deal with IBM so I can't really comment.
I've bought HP servers in the past (or rather my PHB did on my recommendation) The price was great, They were HP/Compaq machines which were in my opinion at the time a good brand
Then the servers started blowing up random components. Not just one of them! 3 of them. A couple of months later same machines died again same fault on the new parts.
Remember.... You get what you pay for:(
Much downtime Much phoning HP support Not much engineer on site
VERY VERY bad week for this geek. And I won't recommend HP for anything anymore
Actually most new Data Centres are using water. Halon and it's replacements are actually bad for the hardware. These days Data Centres use de-mineralised water. Safer for the gear (Once you've dried it out)
Not like the left-wing, limp-wristed, tree-hugging freaks we see around today. These wacky newfangled eastern religions started out ok Version 1 wasn't bad, had lots of 'splosions 'n stuff but Version 2 just didn't have the gusto to it
There is so much wrong with this I hardly know where to start.
Software isn't a material good; it lies more in the realm of concepts.
Algorithms I would agree, If I told you how a bubble sort worked & you used that idea, no problems. I shared that knowledge with you. If I wrote a bubble sort program & you used it without my say so, that is plain wrong.
If I don't want to share my idea with you, but want to sell it to you , that I believe is what patents are for. If I write code & want to sell you a copy, thats what copyrights are for.
Please note I'm not excusing the "One click shopping" BS A pattent on something truly new & usefull is fine. A good example might be the pattent that was held on the RSA algorithm.
Software is information, like speech. You can't restrict people giving it to eachother.
And property is theft. Sorry. Utter crap. If you copy my hard work without my permission You have stolen my valuable time and hard work
Theft. You have deprived me of something that I can not get back.
Ok, we agree that everyone likes to get something for nothing:)
Yes piracy is copyright infringement. The question is, is it also theft?
Some use the argument that software is like speech. That if you copy my software , I still have my original to use as I wish
But!
Look at it this way, I spend say 100 hours writting a nifty little program which I then sell. You're copying of my program with out paying for it has left me 100 hours of effort down the drain It may mean I can't pay the rent or buy food, it may not. Either way I'm still short 100 hours of my life.
If I decide to share my 100 hours of work under the GPL then thats my decision to make If I decide to try and sell my 100 hours of effort, again thats my decision to make.
Copyright infringement may not legally be theft But in my opinion it's still stealing, even if it's only the theft of my time and effort.
Sorry, I'm having difficulty trying to express myself clearly. I wholeheartedly believe in F/OSS software. I will use nothing less. I have the greatest respect for those who write software under free licences for the enjoyment and education of all. But that it their decision to do so.
It is wrong & immoral to take other people hard work & missappropriate it against their wishes Doesn't matter if it's F/OSS or Shareware or whatever.
I friend of mine once asked me what I liked about Linux...
:)
I told him "I can make it do just about anything, with a bit of work"
Then he asked me what I didn't like about Linux, and I told him...
"To make it do anything, I need to do a bit of work"
Which I think is a pretty fair and honest account

Mostly true
Don't forget that it costs a LOT more
to live in the developed world.
Yes if you could take your income with you to
one of the poorer countries you could live like
a king.
But when you live in the developed world
you pay developed world prices.
Thats why they have things like consumer price indexes, to give you an idea on what your
spending power is like compared to other countries.
