We don't bury it under tons of earth and rock. Ever seen a landfill? Maybe a few feet of topsoil. Not only that, but I'm guessing pure lead in solder is a bit more toxic than whatever form it is found in nature (I wouldn't know, I'm not a metallurgist or geologist, I'm a janitor.).

Lead is an EXTREMELY potent toxin. My dog had anemia, and, as a result, started eating at the paint (the vet said it was because it's an instinct, blood doesn't have enough red blood cells, need more iron for red blood cells or so body thinks, goes for any source possible, lead is a metal, so is iron, lead is in paint). We stopped him pretty quick, but he had already given himself lead poisoning from the small amount of paint he ate. Lead also stays in the body. You get a little now, a little later, and eventually, it's a lot. Not only that, but lead in a landfill usually ends up in the water.

Lead's bad. So is Cadmium and a whole slew of other heavy metals and heavy metal compounds. They're not deadly as in touch it and you die, they're deadly 30 years down the line, and that's what makes it so bad. And I'm no greenie, either. Both of my trucks have engines with greater than 300cid, are carbureted, and have no EGR and no catalytic converters.

Intellectual property at its finest, Sir.

As long as you only THINK it, WRITE it, SAY it, SING it, ACT it, or ILLUSTRATE it, wrong, immorally, incorrectly, fucked up, whatever, that's fine. Software falls under this category.

However, if you BUILD it wrong, fucked up, immorally (you can't build a blimp shaped like a giant set of boobies and get away with it, can you?) your error could directly lead to harm (or moral corruption, so sayeth the powers that be). Now, we all know these rules are fuzzy, people sue producers of intellectual property all the time (usually under the morality category), and a software error could still kill you, ( IF DAY == TUESDAY, THEN RUN FUNCTION kill_patient_painfully() ) but if you put it into black and white, intellectual property = not liable for incorrectness, physical property = liable for incorrectness.

I don't believe this is right, but this is the Way Things Are(TM).

Yeah, time to ditch the car. Remember, I'm from the land of carburetors and big blocks. In Pennsylvania, my emissions test is to simply check that the EGR valve and catalytic coverters are in place, and that the gas cap doesn't leak. In other counties, and in other states, the test can be more stringent - but an ABS light wouldn't fail you. Here in PA, we have safety inspections also, so there aren't people driving around with bald tires and no brakes, but not all states have these.

And yeah, a leaky headgasket could well cause oil losses, but you'd also have a smoky exhaust, or a very cloudy one. You'd also have coolant that bubbles in the overflow tank or be losing excessive amounts of it. 1100-1600 pounds sounds about right for that kind of repair. I don't think you can use this as a sign of disposable cars, however - even crap American cars (eg: Chevy Cavalier, Ford Tempo, stuff of that nature) these days are rather reliable.

Trust me, I feel your pain when it comes to having to make your car ready for inspection - it's a pain in the ass, but it's one of those good pains in the ass.

    The MOT is German, correct?

In any case, that's more a problem of too much government interference than a car being ready to be trashed at 6 years. ABS out? Not a safety issue. When the antilock braking system fails, you still have full use of your brakes, but they can now lock up. Oil leak? Once again, not a safety issue. Environmental, sure, but there are worse things than leaking an few ounces of oil onto the pavement (which is, surprise, made of oil and rocks). Suspension? Depending on what part of the system, it could just mean a rough ride. Either way, it shouldn't be costing you that much! On my car (a 1998 Mazda 626 ES-V6, with 300,000 miles [482,803 km for you metric whiners], a japanese designed but american built car), ABS system replacement would run about $500. New struts all around would run about $350. I do have an oil leak, at the oil pan, and I plan to fix it myself, and it would only take a garage an hour or two to fix, plus the cost of the gasket, so not much over $75. If that quote is from a dealer, then that's your first problem. Independent mechanics are much cheaper, usually quicker to finish the job, and most of the time, they really need your business! They might not have a clean cut, greaseless secretary to take your keys, but they're always more than willing to take you in the shop and quite literally show you exactly what is wrong. If you walk in with an idea of what is wrong, you can drive out with a cheap fix and more knowledge about the problem then you ever needed :P

I don't believe the courts have said DVDCCA's purpose is patently illegal. It IS illegal to break a valid copyright protection method as per the DMCA, and CSS is a valid protection method (Encryption, access only by legal agreement). However, for PERSONAL "Fair Use", it seems to be the court's opinion one may break the protection, but I don't think a person selling something to automate it could get away with it. Wasn't that one small company that had DVD to VCD software sued out of existence? I'm not sure what a court's opinion in that situation would be, and I don't think we'll ever know, the media moguls will only come after those companies that are small enough that they can take out without risking a court setting judicial precident that isn't in their favor.

With this license, I'm sure Kalidescape is exempted from responsibility of their customer's actions, but it seems that the DVDCCA thinks not. A court will have to decide that.
