Well, at least theres a community on slashdot, where else am I going to get my 1. Nat Portman 2. Hot Gritz 3. in Soviet Russia 4. BSD Dieing 5. Profit fix?
You forgot about imagining a beowulf cluster. Otherwise -- good list.
I fail to see how that's relevant in this case. I don't cast my vote or make my decision based on who's likely to win. I cast my vote on who I think best represents by views. Who wins the election may be a popularity contest, but who gets *my* vote is not. I'm not alone in this.
If Badnarik is not even asked the same questions as the two governmentarians, the how can voters possibly be informed of their options?
Did they invite Libertarian presidential candidate Michael Badnarik? Why not? He will be on the ballot in 49 or 50 states, plus DC. He's polling 4-5% in some states.
I canceled my cable last week due specifically to my dislike for the Sci-Fi network. I'll put that $120/mo into something more worth while and any shows that I deem worthy enough to waste my time watching, I'll just grab from bit torrent.
I cancelled my cable back at Christmas, 8 months ago. Read my reason here. I recommend getting a netflix account. It's cheap, commercial-free and they've got tons of discs to choose from.
It seems to me the only reason people are obessed with finding life on Mars, or anywhere else for that matter, is to fill some urge that if they do, to less scientific minded (read: religious) people will be proven wrong.
Good point.
I, for one, hope we don't find any hint of life on Mars. If we do, the hopes of us terraforming it anytime soon will be dashed. It will become a protected habitat and Redpeace will be stopping ships from landing on its pristine service, protecting it from us evil, evironment-altering humans.
We want artificial "friends" to do what we can't persuade actual humans to do for us.
Essentially, it's giving people the ability to say, "Hey, you won't scratch my back? Fine. I'll just go out and buy a robot, and then I won't need you at all!"
How dismal.
Robots are not meant to be a subsitute for human relationships. Robots, humanoid or no, (and like any machine) are meant to extend and/or replace human labor and make us more productive, (and therefore, more wealthy).
I wish people would stop anthropomorphizing and romantacizing robots. I just want a robot to wash the dishes, do laundry, mow the lawn and scrub the toilet. When it breaks, I'll fix it or get a new one. I'll upgrade when the new model comes out. It will not be my "friend."
When I have a robot, I'll have more time to spend with my family, and go make more real friends.
It would seem more useful to build robots that are designed with the task they must perform in mind. Therefore, they could perform it far better than any human.
Rather than repost, I'll just point you to this previous/. thread. Humanoid robots will humanoid for a reason.
Even though it's not that hard, nobody should *have* to fall back on tarballs and./configure / make / make install. DUMB
Very true. I made the mistake of selecting a "desktop" install instead of a "workstation" install when (finally) setting up my wife's pc with FC2 -- (she's off Win, yeah). I didn't realize that desktop installations did NOT install gcc! Then I wanted to install Scribus, and I was nixed right there. I sighed, shuddered to think what else might be missing from a desktop install, an proceeded to re-install, working with a "workstation" setup the second time around.
I hope AutoPackage can address these types of issues, looks promising .
How do you/. the web site of a major motion picture? You'd think they could afford the bandwidth/horsepower.
Can't wait for the movie, though. I've got to get my DVD set of the series back and watch it again. I've loaned it out -- doing my part to extend the fan base.
1) If a used game is being sold for more than 75% the retail price, STOP, buy the game retail.
2) Ask the clerk how much the store would give you if you SOLD them a copy of that game. If the difference between that price and the used price is more than 50% of the retail price, STOP! Buy the game retail.
The tests in 1 and 2 make sure that the store isn't ripping you and the publisher off. You'd be better off looking through ebay listings for that kind of markup.
That's total BS.
How it is ripping you off? You are saving money! He's not gouging you, he's even offering you more choices. The fact that the seller is making money is irrelevent from your perspective.
Assuming products X and Y are functionally identical, which offers the better value proposition for both the buyer and the seller?
Prodcuct X: N price for buyer; S profit for seller
Product Y: N - 20% price for buyer; S + 100% profit for seller.
It a win-win situation for both participants. I buy used books, used dvd, and used music for exactly the same reasons. Hell, I even buy used cars.
What else should be done with the used items that the original purchaser no longer needs? Just send them to a landfill?
Don't puke any more BS about the game vendors "suffering" because of the secondary-market -- nearly ALL industries have a secondary market. That's the way of the world, it will never change, and if they haven't factored that into their business decisions and are now squealing sour grapes, then TS for them.
Additionally, the secondary market reduces the cost of ownership of the original purshaser, by effectively giving him a 10-20% discount off the purchase price in the form of a future resale. This give him an incentive to buy more new games. The secondary market *improves* the primary market.

I'm a liberal. I also am a firm supporter of the 2nd Amendment, and in fact own multiple firearms.
Wouldn't that make you a libertarian?

A ring of Klingons, of course.

Where's the effing font management? How does my wife install TTF fonts without the command line or editing text conf files?
in Spain, american practices like stock options are considered bribery and corruption.
Hmmm. I wonder why?
How much is a company really worth when all the BS is stripped away?...

To be fair, the remake of Battlestar Galactica was pretty good.
That is a lie, and I demand a retraction.

Sheesh.
a human maid would be so much cheaper that I could employ him/her for many years while giving him/her work.
That's an assertion: "a human maid would be so much cheaper." How do you know this?
Robots won't become mainstream until, among other things, the TCO really is cheaper than traditional labor costs.
You know what a Luddite is, right?

With how everyone has been treating them, versioning is pretty much worthless, beyond identifying what you have..
Duh. What other purpose should the product version serve?
star trek without klingons
The Klingons are our friends now.

If in most humans there is a process that actively limits muscle growth, then there must be a downside to being muscular... I wonder what it is.
Maintaining the muscle weight must require significant caloric intake. How much does the child eat? What is his metabolism?
That might be one reason for limiting it. We couldn't hunt/gather enough food to support to the energy needs for that much muscle.
If so, then that evolutionary pressure no longer applies. Well, mostly.
Und now ve vill all be like Ahnold. I vant my muscles and such tings like dat now. I vant to be pumpep up.
Now that amorphous steel is a reality, we are only one step away from transparent aluminum.
