"The sad thing is, I really don't believe we'd have been much better with either of our presidential alternatives: I think Gore would have found a completely different way to bungle things after 9/11 and make someone miserable (probably us) and Kerry would probably have really fouled up the occupation...yes, even more than Bush."
You can't go to war with the President you'd like to have, only the one you've got.
In all seriousness, I know this is just an opinion but what could you possibly base this on?
There was a game for Intellevision where you were Dracula and you had to walk down the street and knock on their doors. When they came out you chased them around the block trying to bite them. Hilarious.
I think the main reason is that it took this long for people to have some sort of data loss event (hard drive failure, laptop stolen, etc.). Apple's unfriendly and limited reauthorization process is a pain in the ass when everything else by them merely requires a drag and drop. Once the word gets out by a few people, "Oh, I spent a ton on iTunes and lost it all because apple won't let me redownload the files I paid for" or "I tried to burn a CD but I'm out of burns" and people will limit their purchases. I probably spend $100-$200 a year on music and less than 5% of that is through iTunes.
The current treatments for advanced melanoma (Dartmouth protocol or Interleukin 2) are extremely difficult to take and they only have a 5-10% chance of a full recovery. Granted, this new treatment only worked for 11% of the patients but typically the people in these studies are in them as a last resort. We tried to get my Dad into one after his chemo stopped responding.
It was too late for him, but hopefully not for the thousands who die from melanoma every year.
"I think that the future (not that it's really pertinent to this question) is something local, a client running on every editor's PC, like NetObject's nPower (if it's any good, haven't used it)."
I highly disagree. If you're able to get by with that then you either...
1. Don't have much content to manage 2. Don't have to worry (too much) about training new editors 3. Don't have to worry about integration with other business systems
CMS solutions are not easy to implement and rarely do everything that you want, but putting that much power in editors hands will inevitably get disorganized. Maybe I don't know that much about nPower, but that's my initial impression.
I checked it out yesterday and finally got one of theor limited developer accounts. So far it's kind of neat. I was able to clone a "this or that" type app and set it up to answer the age old question:
Which is the coolest? Robots, Aliens, Pirates or Ninjas?
"It bothers me to no end when people tout hydrogen fuel as pollution free. It's not. You only move the source of pollution away from the highly visible tail pipe."
What's better? Concentrating the pollution in a remote area or bringing it to, by defitinion, places everyone is trying to get to?
"Too many restaurants refuse to cook meat anything under "medium""
Any place will cook your steak rare. It's safe to eat rare steaks because there isn't any bacteria inside the meat. It's on the outside, and that gets cooked.
Ground beef isn't safe to eat rare because bacteria is all over it and must be cooked off.

"Shockingly 40% of mathematics teachers in California are not fully qualified in the subject "
Wow, only 70% are fully qualified?
What are you doing to connect rural societies? You're just sitting here commenting on slashdot! Talk about priorities...
"leading a NASA effort to create a permanent network link to Mars within the next two years"
Yeah, but you need 3rd party software to copy from the iPod to a hard drive.

As a member of the calorie restriction society I have one thing to say:
Ohhhh my god give me a sandwich!
Anyone who finds Tetris comforting is sick.

I wrote a tetris variant in Tk that runs pretty well.
Ok, it barely refreshes fast enough to be playable.
But still, it's awesome. Try it and you'll find out why.
Play Spew.

I'm going to start charging companies who manufacture accessories for me, like hats, clothes, and life jackets.
Who didn't know that place was full of STDs? (Script Transmitted Diseases)
There will be Internets after all.
Wireless power is not all that difficult to implement, just don't step in front of the beam or you are wirelessly cooked.

Right. Or have them play 5 star songs 70% of the time, 4 star songs 20% of the time, and 3 star songs 5% of the time.
The smart playlists are great, but they could use some improvement.

"I stayed in their hotels, ate their food and patronized their stores."
You forgot "looked at their boobies"
The reason they aren't making as much money is they haven't released Passion of the Christ II yet.
"I find that children respond better to positive reinforcement and supportive counselling than savage beatings."
Especially when savage beatings are the next step when positive reinforcement fails.

Uh oh!
They should just play his (Philadelphia) famous song, Don't Be a Jerk
