Chances are, imo, at least, is that they'd be manufactured somewhere where there was electricity, as well as surplus salad shooters. And while manual centrifuges may be inexpensive, can you really get more inexpensive that bulk buying plastic salad shooters and refills for hot glue guns? This, to me, sounds like something that could be sold in developing nations for $5-10 per unit, if not less. And being all manually powered, I dont see why soaking it in bleach, or boiling water wouldnt help sterilize it (not perfectly...and an autoclave would need electricity..and probably damage/melt it...). And with the production costs and sales costs so low, the cost of replacing it if it's too worn down, or contaminated, would not be that expensive. Especially the units were donated by some large charity or some overly right person who will never spend their billions of dollars before their great great great grandchildren are dead...

I've never once actually reached it. The software we use requires some swap to exist. But, I guess it all depends on WHAT you will be using the system for. If you're using it as a End-User System (I like that better than "Desktop" or "Laptop"), you may find out you need more, depending on what apps you're running. But, as others have stated, even if you create a 2G swap partition... if you run out.. create a swap file.. do a swapon on it etc.. and poof.. now you got that much more swap. It's like Windows' pagefile.. where it can determine how large a file it needs to create up to a certain limit.. but it's not automatic (and I'm sure there's a script/app out there in the linux/unix/bsd world that will automatically adjust your swapfile based on usage.

But, I think the Swap == 2x RAM deal has mostly gone away. It made sense when people had 256M ram, or on a decent midlevel system, 512 or 768M (I've also heard 1.5x and 2.5x from different sources), but nowadays, where you can have a a dual quadcore xeon with 128G of RAM... does it really really make sense to have 256G of swap? Unless you're doing something really really intensive, it just doesnt. Maybe highend CAD/CAM work, animation, etc, you might need it (Like you're making the next big Pixar movie on your 1 system!). But, really.. most users (even us on slashdot) arent going to need that much swap..

And I'd hate to tell the others at my company that we can only really use 2 drives in the 3 drive system, because we're using the 2x RAM == swap method, and needed an entire 400gig SATA drive for swap...(yes, using the supermicro systems that hold 192G ram, and quad six-core CPUs).

Remember.. with the government (state and federal), the law is there to protect them, and can be shrugged off whenever needed. Now, for work, we have some systems with good RAID cards, but they are doing database stuff, and hosting hundreds of websites (though I have them set to be 2 8drive RAID0 arrays, 1 for data, one as a backup partition). And the cards cost about 700 each, so definitely not made for home use, unless you really have tons of disposable cash.

There was a FAQ published years ago, about FreeBSD, on using vinum, and showing that Software RAID tended to be faster than HW RAID on all but the really expensive controlers. Same is true now, only more so.

The only good thing about some HW RAID controlers is that most OSs will see the built array as a single drive. The cheap cards, however, wont be shown that way in Linux (ie: the SiI 3112/3114 series.. even if you make a striped array, it'll show both drives in Linux)

And since all wiring needs to be redone, instead of getting a really highend UPS, you can always get a generator. My house has a 15kw/100A dualfuel generator (Natural Gas and Propane). Plesk is a real bitch when it comes to rebuilding certain things, such as.. MySQL, PHP and Apache. I worked for a hosting provider for years, and always recommended cPanel over Plesk, since the end user could easily add new PHP modules, rebuild Apache or MySQL when a new version was released (All done through the WHM login).

Plesk, you CAN rebuild them, but you have to find where they put various files (of which there are 3 copies, for different things), and install using the same path as Plesk's original install (and sometimes it's not that intuitive).

Ensim, as well, is a pain to update. If Ensim themselves did not release an update, it most likely wont be updatable by you, as they use proprietary modules for Apache (at the time I last used it)

Control Panels are for people who dont want to hire a full time Admin, and just want a simple way to resell shared hosting. Or, they're also for actual experienced Admins who want to simplify everything. Why spend 20min to set up a new domain in apache, then exim/qmail/sendmail, setup the jailshell, set their quota, their allowed bandwidth, etc, when you cn do it in 3 minutes or less with a control panel?
