Impact Probability
The probability that the tabulated impact will occur. The probability computation is complex and depends on a number of assumptions that are difficult to verify. For these reasons the stated probability can easily be inaccurate by a factor of a few, and occasionally by a factor of ten or more.
So the odds of disaster could be as high as 1 in 23. Fortunately they could also be as low as 1 in 2320.
Along those lines, the estimated mass could be out by a factor of three too. And the size by a factor of 2.

Real Gapless, not the rip-as-one-track fake gapless hack that iPod owners have to use. Not the 0.5s nearly-gapless-so-not-really-gapless 'gapless' that the Creative Zen does either.
The Karma has the HonestToGoodnessZeroSecondOneTrackPlaysIntoTheNext version.
You've been burned by that one experience, but don't discount HD based car players completely. Other solutions exist that don't suffer from HD failures. I've had 2 30GB drives in my empeg for over two and a half years without a failure. Now they are laptop drives (designed for shock) and they are mounted in an anti-shock cradle (empeg design), so that probably helps. Of the >4000 empeg players in the wild, only a few have ever suffered HD failures.
Yeah, but there's lots of niceties that the PC solution doesn't immediately address including;
4V line outs for better SQ. Fully parametric EQ for better SQ. Credit card remote so your passengers can search for music. Incredible player software with a UI designed for car use. Well integrated into the car's power scheme. Constant 12V, switched 12V and illumination sense are all handled intelligently, out of the box. Cool visuals.
And yes, we've hacked in GPS too. Admittedly, with a 32x128 2-bit color screen and the fact that there's no existing decent GPS mapping software for the ARM, it's somewhat limited, but it's there.
I'm toying with the idea of hacking a MediaMVP to use a serial touch screen and act as an ethernet thin client remote for the empeg. Nothing more than an idea at the moment though...
Of course, one really has to wonder why he wasn't given a warning first. The offense for which he was fired sounds like an excuse to get rid of someone. Age discrimination anyone?
This is a lawsuit waiting to happen. And against The Department of Job and Family Services too. That's going to make the primetime local news reports and leave the department with a lot of egg on their face.
Maybe Tom won't be the only one 'beamed' out of the building.
It's going to be amusing if he turns around and sues the state for slander. After all, it's been very publicly broadcast to millions of people that he's short of intelligence.
Nor am I actually. I want an LCD mounted on the ceiling above my bed. That way I could like falt on my back and relax whilst watching TV in bed, rather than strain my neck and back whilst trying to retain some sembelance of comfort.
Of course, my wife is perfectly happy with the CRT on the dresser. Probably 'cos she nicks my pillows.
It's just not worth spending the extra money on a 15" LCD television. Consider the market - most small televisions are put in the kitchen, a bedroom, or a utility/exercise type room. People don't really want to spend much money on such televisions. Furthermore, the space savings of a 15" LCD over a 15" CRT television isn't that huge. A 15" CRT will happily sit on a dresser or a shelf.
The real market for LCD televisions is for the large televisions. The difference in physical volume between a 34+" LCD and a 34+" CRT television is significant. And you can wall mount an LCD - the CRT will need some form of stand.
Seriously, I'm surprised that Steve Jobs can still sh1t given all the slashdotters clambering up his pipe.

Beatles vs Apple

· Score: 2, Insightful
As if when I think "Apple," I think "Beatles."
Prior to the '80s you would have. This is the crux of the whole problem - Apple (computers) agreed to not encroach on Apple's (music company) turf within the music business, purely to avoid this whole situation.
Apple (the music company) want to be the _only_ company in the music business associated with the name Apple. They in all probability had the legal right to that (which is why Apple (computers) settled in 1991), and the agreement meant that they definitely have that right now. Are we supposed to be surprised that Apple (music) are upset about this?
The success of Linux in the early days owed much its stability and the fact that it could be relied on to not corrupt data. The IDE subsystem *just worked*.
Mark Lord wrote the original IDE drivers and also hdparm.

You're kidding right? $27 is less than the then cost of a decent joystick anyway. And have you looked at the prices of PC joysticks recently?
Oh, wait a second, they didn't do that either.

I'd argue that Chief Scouts have done more for their societies than most, if not all, television political hacks.
Beats anything on _new_ in the market, maybe.
But a second-hand empeg will stomp all over a new phatnoise.

Yeah, they are. His also have Optical, Coax and I2S digital outputs and 48MB of RAM...
What?
60 GBytes not enough for you? Gapless playback not good enough? 4V pre-outs useless? 4x5 or 2x10 fully parametric EQ too shabby?
It was done 'properly' years ago.
Why? The guy is 63.

Well, they've had the idea of requiring authorization, so the effect is the same.
Anyone got a mirror?
...a team in Redmond is tasked to make sure that Microsoft own the "single Web of meaning, about everything and for everyone."
Fair enough. But you're not like most people.

It really needed to throw Microsoft Word documents.
LOL, I'd like to see them try and make a single-layer motherboard!
...apart from the "Apple!" and "iPod!" headlines?
