  1. Can you blame them though? on CT Lottery to Offer PC Game · · Score: 1

Seriously though. They have a skill and need money, so why not combine the two and find out how to make the money.

I suppose people would look at this as stealing, but in actuality it is just survival of the fittest.

  2. Don't forget about the Stephen King Classic "Rage" on Half Mast · · Score: 1

If you enjoy this book, you will most likely enjoy Stephen King's first novel, "Rage". He wrote it while in high school and deals with an outsider student who gets fed up with school and holds his class hostage.

A very good novel that would make an awesome movie.

Awesome. I knew that they were talking about adding support, but I didn't know if they actually were working on it.

    Thanks for the info.

But what about other MP3 players? Would it be hard to reverse engineer their firmware.

  4. Reverse Engineer Firmware on Ogg Vorbis Portables On The Way · · Score: 1

I was wondering how hard it would be to reverse engineer some firmware for the CD MP3 players. I use a Riovolt SP-100. Now Rio hasn't updated their firmware in forever, but you can use their Korean cousin's firmware (iRiver).

Would this be possible and feasible? Or should we just wait until the company does it themselves?

Because they are just loose concepts. That's like trying to patent the form of communication known as a "debate". It is logical and reasonable that other people would come to point in their life where they might want to "debate" things with other people.

Just like searching something by keyword. I wonder if libraries are going to get sued because of the Dynix based searches using keywords.

  9. Re:It's about time... on NCR Patents the Internet · · Score: 3, Insightful

Yeah but the sad thing is that they will be making money off of other internet entrepreneurs, instead of consumers. I would hate to see some great sites go down due to patent infringement. Isn't science supposed to be unpatentable if it prohibits evolution?

Actually, most P2P programs already do this and allow you to search by checksums when looking for more sources.

I know that Kazaa and Gnutella both use this method.

  12. This method doesn't really work. on Mission: Infiltrate the P2P Network · · Score: 1

This method doesn't really work because most file sharing programs now use, or use variations of, MD5 sums to find multiple hosts of the files. So by changing the quality, even slightly to an audio file, changes the entire sum and thus will be the lone file in the search results.

Didn't the company think of this at the time?

  14. Another approach to this without submissions. on GeoURL: We Know Where You Live, Work and Blog! · · Score: 1

There could be another approach to this geographic mapping of the web so you can find neighbors and what not.

WHOIS databases also contain the address of the people who register the domain names. One could program a bot to lookup domains and parse out the geographic information from their entry and then put that into a database using the technology that the guy in the Google Programming Contest did in order to assign a lat. and long. number (or ICBM number).

Then you could even allow people to update their entries like you can with the online phone books just in case the spider grabbed the wrong information.

Yeah. I agree. Perhaps we could come up with some sort of identification network where we could try and pin point spammers, get their addresses, and then send them tons and tons of letters.

Hell we could even sign them up for magazines and catalogs. Then maybe they would understand how much pain they bring us.

I am very excited about this electronic/digital paper. When I was little I thought it would be cool if we all had little "base" books and we could just slip in a floppy or something and load up a book. Now it seems like this little fantasy that I had when I was younger, could actually become a reality.

Also, I wonder actually how expensive it actually will be. Will it be feasible to publish books/manuals/essays for this digital paper? Will it have USB port on it, so you can convert over text to the format used in the books. Will it be a format that is similar to PDF? Can hackers reverse engineer the format and make a free convertor? I sure hope so!

Well, you bring up a very intersting point. Why are the people on Slashdot, who created content, just like musicians, upset that this Contentville place stole their papers and are now SELLING them for money. Well, it could because this Contentville is selling it.

You are arguing the fact that we, the Slashdot community, shouldn't get upset because people are selling our ideas, and papers, because we allow, like, and backup things like Napster, and GNUtella. We take this stance because those systems give away information for free, not for a price. That is where the difference is.

Mine is there and I never gave them permission to sell it. As far as I know, I am the sole owner of the copyright on my thesis.

How many musicians on napster gave their permission for their work to be distributed? Why do people on slashdot complain about *their* copyrights being violated, yet vehemently defend their right to violate the copyrights of musicians? It all seems silly to me...

The musicians, at least most of them, didn't give or encourage people to download their music over Napster, or a similar system. And also, the part that you quoted says, "I never gave them permission to sell it." He didn't, but they are. And also, Napster isn't selling a musicians music, they are merely distributing it.
