I don't think there's an validity for an argument that applies examples from history at a time when we are going through unprecedented technological changes. We are still at a relatively early stage of the digital error, and we are barely at the start of a new era in robotics.
His whole argument seems to extend from an age old egotism that nothing can replace the human mind.
Well I think he's totally wrong.
In the case of driving cars, the process can be replaced with a relatively simple autonoma i.e. don't run into anything.
The human mind is often so bored with this simple task that it finds other things to distract itself with, and that's how accidents occur most of the time i.e. whilst driving, people simply forget to drive the car.
If anything Googles program has proven that automated systems can make driving safer than human controlled systems
To me this guy seems to be making a statement which is purely opinion based, with no real technological or scientific methodology behind it and he is making this statement purely to gain publicity for himself
I think the whole point is the environment on Mars is so hostile to life you, if you were to make that approach work the leap you would need to make would be like the one made in the movie Transcendence....
,,, turn us into machines that don't need breathable air, water etc etc.... Just solar energy to power our circuits. Actually wait we've already made that leap and its called the Mars Rover.
I was there in 2005-2008 and I'm pretty sure it is the same now as it was then. You have to pass an entrance exam, which includes a Deutsch (German) fluency test
Basically if you can speak Deutsch you're one of them.
A very good cross platform development tool for developing mobile apps.
The CLI (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Common_Language_Infrastructure) was always open. Microsoft has worked with Mono developers from the get go and has even funded them...
The notion that this is a recent renaissance is a complete fallacy. Microsoft understands that like any other company that when people leverage your technologies there are many opportunities to make money.
Open Source is not inconsistent with their strategies, which are all about making money and dominating the market, like every other company on the planet.
Well either you work with technology that doesn't require ethernet or you're planning on retiring.
Cloud services are not a trend. It's not going to go away, completely ignoring them for someone in the business of building software is a ridiculous folly.

The last thing you're going to get is good coverage.
Astonishingly he was SENT HOME when he first presented himself to a medical practitioner exhibiting symptoms of the virus.
The guy was visiting relatives in the United States, which implies he lives in Liberia, which implies he was probably easily identifiable as a foreigner. What sort of incompetent doctor sends someone home who has an accent African accent and is exhibiting ebola symptoms. Wouldn't you at least ask "have you traveled recently" ?
If he saw an incompetent doctor what other precautions did this doctor not take?
I agree with your assessment of the discussion on Slashdot.
However, why would studying Ebola be the only valid cause for bringing a sick American back to America for treatment? How about giving someone the best possible care they're entitled to?
These people are fighting a war that we can't afford to lose. What sort of message would you be sending to western health workers fighting this outbreak if you abandon them when they become infected?
If you were Kent Brantly or a member of his family you would probably think it's a great idea. A great idea to make sure he receives comfort, the best possible care and to be near family and loved ones.
I don't think this is about studying a disease. It's about saving a fellow countryman who deserves to be given the best possible care that can be given.
Going by the comments, the humanitarian aspect to this story seems to be something that escapes most on Slashdot.
I don't even think giving it away will give it market share.
They need a new version of Windows. One that doesn't try and provide solutions for problems that don't exist, like people wanting a device that is both a tablet and a laptop. If people want a tablet, they buy one, if they want a laptop, they buy a laptop, if they want a laptop and a tablet, they buy a laptop and a tablet.
If they're going to persist with this hybrid device strategy, at least they have to fix the implementation. Many advocates of Windows 8 always ask "But have you tried it on a touch screen device?". I answer, "yes it's better on a tablet, but that doesn't excuse it being shit on a desktop".
In this day and age if you're going to create an OS that works on a hybrid tablet/laptop device you need to make sure it's brilliant as both and that it transitions gracefully from one mode to the other.
These guys work 24/7 with a budget beyond most corporations to ensure they are one step ahead of everyone and can access any piece of information they want to get to.
Short of never connecting your computer to a public network (and even that might not cut it), You're fighting a losing battle against these guys. If there's any technology out there you could truly use to secure yourself against the NSA, they'll do everything to make sure it never sees the light of day.
The only way to really combat this, is to fight for democracy, open government, and legislation to make these sorts of operations criminal activity.
I can understand this being done in the pursuit of scientific research.
But as food? What the hell is wrong with letting pigs f$#k?
Eating cloned animals seems like it would have many completely unnecessary risks associated with it. The human body likes variety in its diet, moves towards homogenization of our food is not going to make us healthier.

You seriously think she would have been personally responsible for the security of her computers?
She can't be secretary of state and across the latest security requirements for a PC.
Ignorance is not dishonesty. You comments are +5 politically motivated not insightful.

One of the largest cross platform gaming engines today is based on Mono the open source implementation of .NET

Most of what you say is true except Bill Gates is definitely not out...

Bill Gates was on the board, he's stepped down from the board to take a more hands on role within the company.
I don't think you give the man enough credit, he is the man who beat Steve Jobs and nearly drove Apple out of business...

Microsoft with (not against) the guidence of Bill Gates are embracing open source as they have every other technological movement there has been.

WinFS has been reincarnated as ReFS - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/R... and is already available on Windows Server 8
I would bet that you'll see ReFS ship with desktop variants of Windows 9
You and Bill Gates agree...
