    Controller 1:

Now, the software does warn me that it could be extra slow in this configuration, but I've seen that it works fine as long as you have enough oomph in your system. All I have is a tbird 900 with an Abit kt-7 raid. (Raid controller not being used -- don't get me started on that one.....)

From what I've seen, SCSI does "feel" faster -- I ran it exclusively in my k6-2 450. But, with the newer 7200rpm ide drives (maxtor) I don't feel much difference in a single user system. I did like using only one ribbon cable, however... :)

I've got my budget set now to where I'll have the credit card paid off within 1-2 years. I honestly see that as more of an attainable goal than saving pennies right now. Especially with the interest.... ouch!

Everybody learns at different rates. As far as credit cards are concerned, it seems that everyone has to go through the "I have to pay this back?" scenario themselves to wake up to the fact that credit cards aren't the way to go.

I haven't really tried out a lot of joysticks for the PC, however, since I have been in to console gaming for about 10 years, I've grown to like certain controller setups.

The Playstation controllers, are, by far the best controllers (warning -- this is my opinion. I'm not trying to start a war.) Unfortunately, the only company I've seen come close to the usability of the PS1/2 controllers is Gravis, and their gamepads.

Now, with that said, Gravis' gamepads suck. They have the same basic feel as a playstation pad, but since they don't have distinct "up,down, left, right" without rotating a huge round pad, I just never had very good accuracy. Consider playing one of the SNES emulators with SF2 turbo. Playing with a gravis controller is like playing russian roulette -- you never quite know which direction you'll take.

I recently purchased (ebay) a controller adapter, and it's made life SO much easier. It adapts the PS2 controller (or PS1) to your USB port. Before then, I had thought about building the Parallel port adapter for the same controllers, but found this one for about 15$, and figured that was worth about 1/2 hour of my labor (in getting the parallel one working)....

So, now I'm truly happy. Does anyone else out there particularly LOVE a controller? I've not found a native PC joypad/joystick that has moved me....

They're not using them for music yet though, from what I can tell. I kinda wish they would, rather than going to the MDLP (read - more compression). I haven't used an MDLP deck yet (primarily because I have 2 components and they don't speak MDLP anyways) but I've heard decent things about the mid-range compression.

Also, whenever I sign up for "advertising" promotions (kroger plus card, big bear card, etc) I use my modem line. I've actually heard someone call it, probably to the tune of once a month. I can imagine their suprise when they hear the modem on the other end..... :)

I'm not saying I don't have illegal stuff on my machines. It'd be crazy to think that probably 25% or more of computer users don't have some illegal mp3's (home users -- lemme clarify that....). Heck, I've had VP's of the company approach me about the best way for their kid to burn mp3's to cd. They thought Napster was awesome in its day, and didn't think twice about getting music for free.

I can concur with you; mp3 is just a "pattern" of the original music (in a sense). But, making exact copies of said pattern (especially without having to invest any time or any measurable monies) is illegal.

  23. I have the same problem.... on Flickering Monitors? · · Score: 1

I've got the same problem in my basement, but I've also realized that 2 things are causing this issue:

    1. Bad Ground/Non-existant ground. Take a good APC surge protector (mine has a little red "ground fault" light on it) and test the outlets/curcuit that the monitors are plugged into. If that light lights up, what could be happening is that you're getting a power drain through ground (or no ground at all) and the voltage on the "neutral" side can be varying.

    2. Overloaded phase on 2 phase ??? (House Wiring) -- A friend of mine explained to me that since there are 2 phases in house wiring (may not apply to your SB office) if you overload one side, you could cause fluctuations in +V on the other phase. I tend to believe this theory (in conjunction with my other problem) causes flicker on my monitors; when the furnace + washer kick on, the flickering gets worse.

That's my personal experience -- hopefully it helps.

Unfortunately, I haven't dug as deep into this project as you need -- I just happened onto it one day while looking at the various linux router projects on the 'net.

As far as I can tell (on the front page), this project uses the Linux Kernel 2.4.13. I would imagine if you want to get source for it (since it's based on the kernel), you could ask for it on the bottom of the FAQ page, which is: http://bbiagent.net/en/faq.htm

I'm not honestly sure what kind of FS it is either. I'm not associated with the project in any way; I've just found it fills a niche for me while I rebuild my firewall at home.... which has now been about 6 months (oops...) Lemme see....

HTTP://www.linuxrouter.org/ should also be something you'd want to look at -- however, the documentation section claims to be outdated; however, there is an archive of their mailing list.

I think if you want the best of the best (i.e. latest kernel + fixes) then you'll have to build your own box (or own floppy distribution.) My suggestion of BBIAgent.net was just meant as a "good enough" fix for most people (just as the broadband routers are "good enough" for most consumers.)

  25. Security? on Low Cost Routers with 100Mbps WAN Ports? · · Score: 2, Insightful

Are you worrying about security on the Lan at Kent State? I'm just curious -- there would be no real reason to have one (firewall/nat/etc) other than to keep people from messing with your computers. Is it a requirement for a 1/1 address per port in the dorm?

I would say that there are probably some pretty high end stuff you could do this with, but like me, you probably don't have the money (and wouldn't invest the money) on such a solution. Most of the commercial (read: home use) cable routers/firewalls use only 10mbps (not sure if it's even full duplex) because you're never going to hit that wall.... by the time we do, you'll have to buy new equipment anyways.

I would think that a nicely equipped machine (p200 or better?) would be able to pass 100mbps full duplex quite nicely. Granted, you'd have to install linux, but I have found a nifty little diskette that can actually get you running with your own nat box in little to no time --> check out www.bbiagent.net.

Make sure you have 2 network cards that are supported, set up your network settings on the page, and whammo! You get an image of a diskette for your specific machine! I honestly think it's a world above the retail-available boxes, because of the 0-$ invested (other than old equipment...) Also, once you use this as your router, you can drop the Hard Drive/CDROM off of the machine alltogether, since it's all on the floppy! Makes for a very quiet machine (I have mine running on a pentium 200, and I barely notice the machine is on!)

    Hopefully this helped....
