The TX does allow you to write anywhere on the screen, but I've found that more annoying than helpful; maybe it's just that I've got a habit now of writing in a little box :)

Anyways, the way I see it, improving my writing from a sloppy mess to a somewhat-legible mess makes things easier for me to read later. And that's a double win in my book.

One thing to think about though, regarding threading.

Just because you have critical sections in one thread that may have to hang out waiting for another thread, doesn't mean that at some point in time the two threads can't execute simultaneously while not needing data from one another. At times like that, you get speedup (especially since you have seperate cores/processing units/whatever)

Same with UT2004. Hardly anyone playing that either.

Actually, as a member of a clan and an active UT2k4 player (>1 hour per night), I'd have to say you're probably not in a UT2k4 clan. For quick pick-me-ups, there aren't a whole lot of pickins to choose from in UT (check out our RTO n00b assault server- there's always someone there!), but once you get into a clan (be it assault, DM, TAM etc) you get a chance to get in on scrims and pugs and all sorts of fun.

Yea, for the casual gamer, it's frustrating (UT2K7 around the corner tho!) but if you are dedicated enough to be in a clan (and I'm really just an average player) there's so much more to play :)

Raid 0+1 means that you have 4 disks (at least), with 2 stripe sets that are mirrored.

So, you've got drive 1 and 2 in a stripe set, and drive 3 and 4 in a stripe set.

Now you mirror the stripe sets.

Supposedly gives you better performance than just a mirrored set, but with a doubling of your cost (although, you do get 2x the storage too...)

  21. Re:Is this guy for real? on Solid State Memory on the Rise · · Score: 4, Informative

The whole point of using memory instead of a hdd is because of speed; the long time for your mp3 player to fill is due to the transfer rate of whatever you're hooking it up to (ie usb).

    That's not entirely correct.

While if you hook up a flash memory to the USB 1 spec, it will be painfully slow, even with a connection to a high-speed USB 2.0 hub, you'll still run into slowdowns. Why? Because most flash (which is most, if not all non-disk related MP3 players) write speeds are averaging around 5-10MB/sec. And even then, that's being generous.

So, for 10MB/sec, that would be at least 1 minute to fill up a 512MB mp3 player. Of course, real world is never the same as rated specs, so I'd be happy with 2 minutes, to be honest....

Another neat trick to try with Flash drives is to fill them with a bunch of itty bitty files - it literally takes forever to do so! Maybe someone more insightful than I can enlighten me as to why that is....
