As a desktop user, about the only times when I have to mess with configure files, is when I've done something to screw up X. In times like that, I'm really not going to like having to wade through XML tags just to find the data that I'm looking for. This is assuming XML files will be as hard to read as some of the more conplicated HTML files.
I'm no expert, but I imagine, as long as you don't go coating your car with what amounts to rocket propellant because, well... it just looks so purdy, you should be just fine.;)
How about a wordprocessor that can't handle outlines or footnotes?
No government agency should use such crap in their work place should they? So why do they still use M$ Word, which is about the worst wordprocessor on the market today?
All I can see is wiz bang features sell... Nevermind you can't do anything productive with the product.
I don't know about where you live, but here in Maryland Verizon flat out refused to allow us to use their service without a long distance carrier. They don't care who you use, but they won't let you not use anyone....
Unless the lady on the other end was just lying, as I suspect she was....
That would be the Libertarian view point. The conservative viewpoint is....well, conservative. In general, use government to regulate your morality.
That they promote big business is a side effect of our political structure. Republicans are just more honest and up front about it than Democrats.
Oh, and don't fall for that, Republicans are going to give me my money back stuff. Both groups will suck you dry in a heart beat. The difference is one group seeks to use the money to set up income redistribution programs. The other group seeks to use it mainly to build cool toys (read: weapons of mass destruction).
In short, if you really want to be consistent in your political stance, vote either Libertarian, or Green.... -- Stupidity is the only crime punishable by nature.

Some companies do in fact Publish their file type standards. Corel for one has openly published said information every since it inherited its programs. It has to since said standards were already open and available on the web.
The problem with your argument is Windows is essentially free to the end user. It comes bundled with the computer she buys. He never sees the cost, there for it does not exist to her.
I'm keeping my eye intently on Xandros. I'm wondering what they are going to do with the Corel file manager.
I find it funny that after all this time, KDE still doesn't have a file manager on par with what Corel came out with for QT 1. I mean, Konqueror is nice, but it really has 0 functionality improvements over the Corel file manager, and is dreadfully slow compared to Corel's product.
I can understand disliking Corel's approach to the OSS community, but if their product is superior, why let pride get in the way of adopting it?

I thought current Xeon processors are Pentium IIIs. The behavior of a PIV is irrelevant if this is the case. Servers run Xeons and Xeons are PIIIs.
I'm a person with some C++ knowledge, but have never coded anything involving a GUI. And a smatering of Perl/CGI knowledge.
I've often considered helping out with some sort of OSS project, but have been worried I do not know enough to be useful. Also, the cvs concept has never been explained to me, and seems a bit obtuse.
Is use of Outlook engraved in stone?
I realize you probably don't have the authority to specifiy what mail clients your company uses, but there are alternatives.

OK, I'm not sure why you asked for this, but here goes....
You are useless.

I can just see the SysAdmin now...

What's that? Yes, I see I've probably told you this before....
Who are you?
Oh I see, you're my doctor....

Not likely.
Microsoft pays no taxes. Taxes are only for the working proletarians like you and me....
How ironic are the views you just espoused in light of your attached signature....

The sad thing is, I get that joke....

Sorta reminds you of all those maddening Mlife commercials that ran for several weeks up until the Superbowl.
In both cases, I may never know what it is but I know I'll never use it.
