Thanks to big companies we have today in TV only stupid, primitive, commercial music. They check what could sell and what not, then promote stuff like Britney Spears or Marlyn Manson. In early 90s I could watch MTV for many hours and wasn't bored, now I can see only stupid commercial stuff.
It's nice to know that Ozzy is on our side. What's about Dio, Tony and rest of Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, etc...?;-)
It seems Creative Labs ran out of ideas after the Sound Blaster 16.
I completly disagree with you.
What you need from sound card? If you are happy with simple one - keep using it.
I remember when I bought PC I was scared - my Atari800 XL had so great sound, and now I must hear that PC speaker?! So I bought Covox. There were ScreamTracker included on disk in box.
It was fun to create music with samples (on Atari I used Chaos Music Composer, without samples support), but quality of sound was terrible. So I bought Sound Blaster 2.0.
DOS games started to play sound. It was still mono, but I had sound everywhere. I started to collect MIDI files, but SB plays MIDI much worse that Atari XL/XE can play its music. So I bought Gravis Ultrasound.
16-bit, stereo, great quality! I was in new world. Not every DOS game works with Gravis or MegaEM emulator, but who cares... I could listen MIDI, compose in ImpulseTracker, and play DOOM then Duke Nukem 3D with stereo sound. And MP3 started to be popular. GUS rocks. That card is still used in my old computer.
With GUS I entered Linux world. MIDI didn't work, becouse author of GUS driver stopped using Gravis Ultrasound and started to develop ALSA. I know ALSA is important, but hey - why there is still no MIDI in Linux for GUS? That's sad:-(
After years I read about SB Live. I wait until emu10k1 driver was mature, then bought SB Live 1024 Player. I am amazed. Completly amazed even today, with power of emu10k1. And yes, I use it mostly in Linux. I bought FPS 1500 speakers few weeks ago. Now I am thinking DDT will be better, but I probably wait about a year, then buy Audigy with new speakers.
Some people buy powerfull CPU, huge hard disk, a lot of memory and expensive GFX card, then low end sound card. And they use it to play games... or mp3...
I understand they don't need better sound card. But why people who only use computer to edit texts can't work on old CPU with small memory? Why everyone must have new computer, new monitor, even new keyboard and mouse, but sound card can be old?

Past Creative cards (including my SB Live! Value) have caused data corruption when copying large files across the IDE bus as well as hissing and popping during mp3 playback. This problem affects at least the VIA 686B on my FIC AZ11E board. You can find out more information about the problem here [viahardware.com].
There is another problem with Live+686B, but only in Windows. When DMA is on you will hear crackles all the time when sound is playing and disk is working. To solve that you need VIA Latency Patch. Don't know if it has something in common with your problem. I have MVP3 motherboard and never had any filesystem corruption.
Povray can work on 386. Blender can work on Pentium. Why could poor artist need (dual) Athlon for modelling? Poor drivers should consider buying Ferrari?
I love all that clever people who buy Pentium4 becouse they want to learn programming .

"Free kicknick!" said mother of 23 years old M. Kicknick, who killed 13 people in school bus. "He is just mechanic" said mother to press.
In the January we will see "Mechanics" - classic movie about serial killers.
They look legit, although I only own 2 windows program (The Sims, Diablo 2, and their expansion packs) so I don't have much to test it on.
Can you explain me why you can't test wine with demo versions ??? It's free...
It is impossible to play a game of freeciv without diplomacy.
I hope you understand, that there is no diplomacy only when you are playing with AI. There is very good in multiplayer mode. When I first time saw Civ3 - my first though was "hey! they stolen diplomacy idea from Freeciv!".

It's hard to say, but Freeciv is much worse than any Civilization, when you play in single player mode. Simple reason - there is no diplomacy with AI. So it's war only game. When you play Civilization3 you survive for a long time without single fight. In Freeciv you must fight, you can't trade, you can't share science, you can't have peace, you can only destroy, steal and conquer.
Of course Freeciv is very nice when playing in the Net. Old versions had big problems with lags (one lagged player could destroy whole game!). When you are in multiplayer for a first time - you see that you just can't play - it's completly different game than with AI. And that is bad thing.
but why play a crap looking game when you can play a beautiful looking one?
Sometime adding graphics is hard, becouse it needs a lot of work, so you have to choose - write better code or spend time creating graphics, sounds, and music.
Please look at nethack - it's awesome, with no gfx/sound at all, now compare it with fallout or diablo - and remember, that nethack is opensource.
You can also try other roguelike games. Yes - there are frontends, but they appear long after games were playable.
Best thing: Download software from trusted companies and entities only, make backups of your registry and boot drive often, don't open attachments in email from those you don't fully trust not to carry viruses, and keep up to date on what new viruses are out there and how they operate.
It is very strange. But I download software from sourceforge and all places listed on slashdot, I never backup my registry (what is it anyway?), I open _all_ mail I want, no matter if I trust author (how can I know if I can trust unknown author?), I don't know nothing about new viruses. And I don't remember when I had virus last time. Am I so stupid or just using Linux?
SDL is a 2D frame buffer and blitting library for the most part
I disagree - what about keyboard, joystick, sound stuff? OpenGL doesn't support that, and it's needed to write a game.
I am porting Atari800 emulator to SDL, now. So I can compare it to other ports - like svgalib or X11. You need a lot of code to write something with pure X, svgalib is messy, too, becouse you have to write keyboard, sound, and joystick driver. SDL it's great library - no matter if you do 2D or 3D game. I think using SDL is best way to write any linux game. And you will get Win/BeOS/Unices portability for free.
Why people still think that RTS means strategy? Yes, I know "real time strategy", but it's like arcade game, you just need to click fast. Look at Civilisation 1, Panzer General, then... Fallout Tactics (with turn mode on!). I think there is a lot of strategy there.
>> For some reason, I always drop WAY too many frames with every Linux video capture program I use.
I think it isn't bttv problem. For a very long time there simply wasn't any good capture program for Linux, now there is. You can try NVrec or ffmpeg . It is possible to capture 320x240 25 fps movie on K6-2 333 (with NVrec). Good luck!
If I understand correctly - system is just closed in device, so I will never use it directly, I will never seen bash there. Then why should I care what operating system is inside? Are some devices more stable than others?
Please try gnut . This console client rocks! You can have multiple search, multiple downloads, and of course you can increase/decrease number of servers at fly. I don't know what is better in Windows client.
I think you can't have 3D audio library without advanced sound device drivers. And AFAIR emu10k1 driver supports effects like delay/flanger/gain, but do not support 3D sound.
Main problem is - nobody need advanced sound drivers.
Most of people just need to listen mp3 (it's similiar to word processors - most people need only.doc import/export). The only way to fix that is to create more 3D games for Linux.
So download SDL then get some info from OpenGL site and gamedev then start coding!:-)
>Mozilla.9.3 felt just as fast as IE
As far as I remember Microsoft software was always slow . Now I see many comments "something is almost
as fast as Word, as Excel or as MSIE - that's great!". What the hell happened? Why this is fast today?
Even, if StarOffice is much slower than MSOffice - that doesn't mean MSOffice is fast! Dillo, links, gnumeric or LyX is fast, well written software. Mozilla (which I am using now), MSIE or MSOffice is not.
I think you should tell that to Mozilla developers. Instead of creating fast and stable browser, they want to create everything - mail/news/irc clients included. Why, if there are already so many good applications ?
> I don't see anyone blaming the author of the Trojan.
Becouse he is not so important.
if system is weak, and users are dumb - there always will be an "author of Trojan" who can make mess in the world for a while.
Trojan can exist becouse system/users, not becouse one author.
I think biggest problem with LyX is that it uses Xforms, it will be great if more developers will work to move Lyx to gtk/qt/GNOME/KDE
there is already wvware with wvLatex , so it is possible
to convert *.doc to *.tex, but you can't just write another LaTeX frontend yourself, you need a lot of developers for this job
Developers can write better and better office software, they spend hours, days, and months to make it more stable, more powerfull, and more user friendly, but all you need is import/export.doc files.
So Microsoft is safe, he will have office monopoly forever, becouse users don't need features, they just need to open and save.doc file with pure text (sometime with different fonts and bolds).Am I the only one who is happy with LyX (yes, without learning LaTeX) ?
Why this is funny???

And what about Holy Wars in Usenet?

I believe you can say exactly the same about vim. But I use Blender and vim without problems. How it is possible?
You will spend far more time trying to figure out what you just did, what happened to your view, and how to get it back, then you will modelling.
Yes. When I am writing letter I shouldn't use vim or latex, becouse I must see my fonts in Microsoft Word.
The only way to figure out how to use it to cough up $199 for the manual (cannot find anything on the site right now).
There is a lot of tutorials in the Net. Please look at blendermania !
