Neat feature, but are you guys going out of your way to make slashdot.org look like the ugliest site on the net? Or do you like that early 90's feel? You guys should add some javascript to make the background fade in and maybe a custom cursor with some trailing penguins or something. If you're going to make an ugly 90s web page.. you might as well take it to the limit.
I've read similar articles a few times saying that they won't last over 5 years.. if that's true, then why do all of the old burnt CDs I have (well over 5 years old) still work? Well I haven't tested all of them.. but the three that I still use regularly are fine.
The guys right about the lack of respect from the open source community, but why should that affect anyones decision. I could care less what you all think.
Ask them [members of the younger generation] HOW the things work, and they have no idea. They are really riding on the backs of the 'old folks' like us that built the goodies they enjoy.
How many 'old folks' know those old technologies? I'm pretty young and I have a better understanding of some underlying concepts (TCP/IP, x86 arch, etc) from ages ago than most of my 40 year old coworkers. This particular guy might be smart enough to where he notices younger people "riding on his/their technology" but he just hasn't met the right young people yet. Unless the 'old folks' were the people who built the TCP/IP spec or something, they probably don't know much more than many techy youth.
I wonder how much money they estimate is lost due to radio recordings. I used to record tapes when I was a little kid. If I recorded a tape it was because I didn't have money or didn't care enough to buy it - either way they wouldn't have received one dime from me for that song. The quality is so terrible, they censor the hell out of them, and usually the song is cut off or faded out early. I'm pretty sure radio recordings are one of the smallest threats to the recording industry.
I played this game non-stop (around my work schedule) for the last week and I gotta say, it is the best action game I've ever played, hands down. I was so impressed by every little element of this game. This is a great example of how a game should be built, and an obvious example of what a game could be like when developers aren't rushed. I highly recommend this game to anyone (but don't get it confused with the old Hulk game(s), which sucks major ass)
what an incredibly stupid invention. wow, it's so innovative and yet nobody i know would ever be able to type on my keyboard. keep up the great work guys!
All common browsers have their CSS issues. Even firefox and opera have certain non-standard css tags. Besides just that, the ones that do implement all (or most) standard css tags, probably won't implement them the same way - so you need to watch out for rendering problems across browsers.
It SUCKS. I tried installing it the other day (yes, I know, daring huh) and at the end of the install it said I did not have access to install this. I'm not only an administrator on my machine, but the ONLY user. It now won't let me uninstall it because it says it was installed by another user. Now IE and half of the Control Panel forms are broken. Thank god for firefox...
If you go to toolbar.google.com in firefox (or Netscape, I assume), they now promote the open-source googlebar extension for Firefox. They also offer a toolbar 3.x beta for IE now.
Also, they have setup a download page where you can grab individual download packages, or all of their packages in one zip file. www.google.com/downloads/
And of course there was the slashdot article, the other day describing the new Weather feature and Gmail Improvements.
Yeah for maybe a day.. People will have apps to hide those ads within hours of having that created. I had a free (and ad-free) netzero account for years!
I realize the php folks don't suggest using it with Apache 2.0, but honestly I've used PHP4 and PHP5 on it for years with not one problem (in Linux and Windows). I always stay current with apache2 and install it as the php.net site suggests. It works great.
Older versions of WMV are pretty well supported cross platform now-a-days, but there's still plenty of other options:
DivX or XviD is cool and probably one of the best options, but then you rely on your end users to have the necessary software.
Quicktime is also a decent format but requires the use of a proprietary player (thus relying on the end-users software again).
MPG would be ideal for cross-platform stuff, but it has compression limitations and might not get to be as small as a WMV file (and maintain the quality).
Real Media -- sucks ass.. don't touch it.
One other option (I'm not too familiar with this..) what about a flash media player? 99% of the browsers out there probably has Flash installed. You could have users stream the videos straight off your site.
Install Firefox!! I used to always use ad-aware and spybot on a weekly basis on my parents box, and they still had all kinds of crap that it wouldn't clean up. Once I installed firefox, all those problems went away. Of course you should still run ad-aware on a regular basis, but it's not AS needed as before.

wow, this happened last Thursday and every techy news page around had it up that day. Good to see that Slashdot is on top of things.
I'm not positive, but I think they would have had to surcumvent (sp?) some sort of encryption for them to get in trouble based on the DMCA.
AJAX brings together some hot properties, Javascript, HTML/DHTML and HTML, according to Julie Hanna Farris, founder of Scalix
How redundant. DHTML = Javascript + CSS + Html... simply saying DHTML + XML is enough to explain AJAX.

Can't you shoot people for trespassing after dark in some southern states?

That article was absolutely hilarious, that guy should be a comedian . What a F'in GEEK.

How do you know I don't buy CDs and rip my own mp3s? I didn't say anything incriminating :)
Well I'm glad I don't pay for my mp3's :)
Has 'free Internet access' finally arrived?

That's the type Y2K-attitude I can relate to
Well, now I'm DEFINITELY not going to college.
