This is an odd place to post your firefox bug theories, but in my opinion 1.0 is at least as stable as 1.0pr.
The only time my firefox seems to crash is if there's a bug in an Extension, or if I'm using a plugin such as adobe acrobat reader, sometime it will get a little unstable. From my experiences it always seems to be some external issue that causes firefox to crash (although I'm not saying firefox isn't responsible for the issues). Mine crashes maybe once every week or two (and trust me, I use it A LOT) - a lot less than IE.
They have done a solid job and snuffing out pirating while managing to avoid pissing off their consumer base.
Actually, they've pissed a lot of people off. If the fact that they've delayed the release of their game about 3000 times doesn't piss you off, what about the fact that they won't admit it's their fault? They would rather blame the late release of their game on a hacker, their publisher, or even their customers before they would blame it on themselves. They dealt with that hacker situation in a really poor way. After lying to their customers about what happened, they ask their customers to rat out the guy.
That's a good point about camera footage being useless - however lots of Motion Detection camera software has Alarm options, where you can specify some.wav file or something that will play when it detects something (and also begin recording). Although it might get a little annoying if theres cats always running by, or something.
First I would suggest watching Home Alone 1. That kid is pretty damn clever and easily fended off joe pesci and that ugly guy. Next I would buy an outdoor webcam with some motion detection software.
I'm tempted to put some 1x1 pixel transparent gif images up on my site and link them to 0byte files called doom3.zip and stuff to see if I start getting some letters...
So I guess slashdot is posting reviews on old PCs now. The XPS has been out for months. Maybe I'll submit some of these other XPS reviews to slashdot and see if they end up a story:
At my work, we're using Microsoft Exchange standard edition (I think), which only limits your total mailbox to 16gigabytes. If you ever hit that 16gig limit you have to have everyone delete a ton of mail, then take exchange offline for a couple hours while you defrag the mail file.
We have about 150 users, so we hit that limit about twice a year which causes huge problems.
At my work, nobody can archive mail, unless they use a personal folder file (which stores the mail on their HD - meaning it doesn't get backed up).
I guess this law could become a problem for my co-workers -- oh well, screw em.
This really isn't that big of a deal. Honestly, if google had it's own news publishing site, I'm sure it's search thing would be biased to that too. Why wouldn't you want to promote your other business units?
This really isnt that new. I've known about it for at least a month, and as you can see at google labs, it has actually been online for nearly 2 months. Very cool though, GO GOOGLE.
I noticed someone mentioned HTML, which can be a lot of fun and very easy, but that is in no means a programming language (its a markup language). I think PHP would be an excellent beginning programming language for someone to learn. It is so lose and simple, and yet so powerful at the same time. It's built to be used by people of any skill level, whether you want just some simple little page counter, or some super complex object oriented forum or something.
It's (for the most part) specific to web programming though, so that might not be the direction you're wanting to go in. You would also need to get access to a web server with PHP running on it.
I think anyone who contributes to a movie like that should receive some sort of compensation. These people in Hollywood make millions doing computer animation and they should have the equipment to back them. If they're going to be making money off of their customers PCs, then the customer should get a free movie pass or something, to make it worth their while.
The difference between this and SETI is - you're helping out a company that has millions and millions of dollars (and can do this without their customers help), apposed to helping a non-profit organization (who completely relies on people to contribute).
Also, I'm sure someone could write some sort of program that takes screen-grabs or even full motion clips from the distributed processing app, and potential release production clips of the movie on the internet.. MPAA would LOOOVE that.
Hasn't enough proof been shown that they AREN'T secure? How can people possibly think they are. I am totally for e-voting, but the software needs to be written by someone who knows the difference between their ass and their elbow (/me slaps diebold around with a large trout).
It's amazing how bad spyware and adware are getting, and even more amazing is how most non-savvy people have no idea what it is! They all know about virus's and stuff, but this epidemic seems to be becoming worse than virus's.
I work in the MIS Department of my company and people are always asking me what they can do to speed up their personal computers at home. The first thing I always tell them is to go download ad-aware (http://www.lavasoftusa.com) and they almost always come back the next day saying that their machine is running 10 times faster than it did before.
Sony makes really good and somewhat affordable electronics, but I haven't been impressed by their Customer Service in any way. I used to be subscribed to Star Wars Galaxies (one of their MMORPGs) and I was appauled at how terrible their support was. I sent their support crew a number of emails, every single one was ignored. Their forums were just huge flame-fests.. it was crazy.
Because of SWG, I refuse to ever use a Sony service again (I'll stick with napster), although I'll still purchase their electronic goods.

I won't ever buy a valve game again.
Is the data safe on a bio-degradable disc? Will it turn into dirt in my PC?
Hi I'm Dr. Panic. I've just discovered that cigarettes are addictive, as well. Spread the word.
hallelujah brother
They're just asking for their market share to go up, aren't they? */sarcasm*
They must still offer updates for Windows 2003, right? I mean it's almost completely based off XP and newer.
.. can slow down business apps..
score one for us drunks!

Yes! It has been nothing but shit since TNG.

Bluetooth sucks anyway :P
So does this mean that the super secure retna scanning that we all know and love is going to be virtually useless?

Was the guys cache filled with child porn or something?
How does looking at porn make you a sex offender? If it's illegal then arrest me right now.

unlike a virus which travels through e-mails and attachments, spreads directly from the internet.
I hate to nit-pick, but Email I think is classified under "the internet". Does he mean via http?
