I say just let the cognitive deficient peons crash and burn without having dumb warning labels. Generations of having to actually use common sense may actually benefit future civilization by stupid people doing their civic duty and removing themselves from the gene pool. I don't know what effect this lack of ethics would have on future society, but it probably isn't much worse than what we have to look forward to within the next 100 years otherwise.
This is why when companies decommission their software, they should just open source it and let everyone go nuts. Someone somewhere is bound to maintain a gaming server for this game. However, companies like Sony have the mentality where if they can't make money off it then no one shall have it.
I have realized the same dilemma. My solution is to stick with the old consoles for those games that I have played in my childhood. It's amazing how fun it still is to play SMB1 on original hardware. Playing on original hardware for classics still beats emulation in terms of accuracy and nostalgia. Even though I know the NES cartridges need to be aligned and not blown, I still blow on them just for the hell of it. Classics that I never had a chance to play as a kid I buy on eBay nowadays. For newer consoles, I just stick to newer gems like Limbo on the Xbox 360 instead of going for remakes (except Perfect Dark since I don't want an N64). I never owned an Atari 2600, but I found myself buying one at a flea market and about 30+ games after that for dirt cheap. Many of those games are still entertaining to this day. One more thing I should mention is that young kids today go nuts for the old hardware more than you think. Break out the NES and they'll harass you to let them play with it forever.
Why buy a phone that you KNOW will not be supported well, or long?
Given the open source nature of Meego, I'm guessing Nokia is expecting the community to pick up the slack here. The Nokia Qt SDK is readily available and from what I've seen in the few hours playing with it, seems like a decent framework for developing "apps" for Meego. While that's all fine and dandy, it would be nice if there was a little official support so that developers can concentrate on writing "apps" and less time fixing bugs and implementing features Nokia should be handling themselves.
This "road" Ubuntu is on is getting too bumpy for me too. Right now I find myself stuck on 10.10 and not wanting to go anywhere. Maverick is a very solid release compared to the others and loathe having to "upgrade" to some crappy interface that Ubuntu forces on me by default. One of my biggest gripes of 11.04 is that they steal the use of the super (Windows home) key for the Unity main menu, making my Super+Space combo useless for Gnome Do and making keyboard shortcuts useless for other applications that use the super key. Removing Synaptic is the last straw, even if I can simply apt it back. When Canonical halts support for 10.10, I'll probably give Fedora or Linux Mint a go.
Fortunately, the good thing about roads is that they can be forked.
Google really screwed up on this one, given the odd people/events they already created doodles for, especially given who made Google possible in the first place. Shame on you Google... shame.
I agree with this to an extent. In real life, a conflict you have with a troll is usually an isolated incident. On FB, this conflict is visible to all your friends and family and is more threatening to your reputation. This has more devastating effects if the troll is more skilled in rhetoric than you and has a backing of more FB users. Also, people who don't see you in the most positive light will often take embarrassing photos or tag them in a humiliating manner, leaving you to spend hours each week deleting tags and doing your own damage control. In the end, for some people, namely myself, the peace of mind of not having to play social mind games clearly outweighs any benefit of having an FB account. If you're not willing to be a follower and obey the hive mind, or don't really care too much about your friends mundane crap, then FB probably isn't for you.
With companies like RIM offering their own mobile hardware and OS, they leave themselves vulnerable to being irrelevant against whoever happens to be the biggest fish in town for the year. Android handset manufacturers have it a bit better with a common OS, but they still have to churn out a new device practically every few months to remain relevant. I'm in no way an Apple fan and have bought none of their products, but they seem to be the only player who gets how to remain relevant by having standardized hardware and a standardized OS, which equates to a standardized user experience, much closer to how it is with PCs. Only problem with Apple is that they are only in it for themselves and do not like the idea of giving their users true choice.
What we need now is the creation of standardized and open handset form factors and open handset hardware which is also to a degree standardized. I'd really like to see a revolution in handset hardware similar to when the ATX form factor was introduced for PCs. Companies like RIM, Apple, Samsung, Google, Nokia, etc. would have so much to offer the industry if they all play on a more even playing field. I'd prefer this to seeing companies like RIM fail and have their customer base give more market share to other companies that directly oppose the direction mobile devices should take.
So this can be analogous to someone using a key bump technique on my house's lock, sneaking in and stealing all my money that I've kept in a conveniently predictable location. Yeah, definitely a problem with the Windows Bitcoin software design. Quite disappointing considering that it was designed to be a secure currency. Having installed this on my torrent machine to see what the fuss is all about, the fact that the dat file is in the application settings folder of Windows rose some pretty big flags for me.
Solution: get a "house" with a good "security system" (i.e. run Bitcoin on Linux)
I know you're sarcastic there, but yeah, the blame really goes to the so-called fans here. Likely most of these people were just looking for a good excuse to cause mayhem and aren't real fans of the Canucks. You wouldn't see something like this at this magnitude in most other Canadian cites. My friend says that B.C. really stands for Bad Canadians, and I'm really beginning to believe that now. This is the kind of thing that turns people off hockey, like Bettman wasn't enough already...
But seriously, 4-0 Bruins??? I'm never cheering for the Cafucks again.
Seems to me that the way in which we reason develops from how we are socialized as children. The popular kid that everyone wants to hang out with doesn't use logical facts to make everyone like him, in fact, that kid could possibly be a little douche. What he does is puts on a display to persuade others that he is cool to hang out with whether it's just being a nice person or dominating others via duress. For other kids to want to hang out with this person, they also have to persuade the alpha male that they are somehow worthy to associate with him. This involves heavy use of rhetorical reasoning, since these other kids could be little douches with little to no substance as well. Not everyone will be able to hang out with this alpha male so we end up with those kids who are left out and singled out as outcasts. For these outcasts to survive without associating with a powerful figure, they rely heavily on the use of logical reasoning to navigate their world and to justify their right to exist when those associating with the alpha male deny this fact. Years of this kind of socialization either makes us more proficient in the use of rhetorical reasoning or logical reasoning, or a mixture of both. If the alpha male in my example was an outcast instead, it is likely he would grow up being proficient in logical reasoning regardless of whether his brain was hardwired for rhetorical reasoning or not.
The way we socialize indicates that we value association with prestige more than individual autonomy, and this is what perpetuates an excess of rhetorical thinking. There are huge problems in this world that can only be solved if we reduce all the pointless rhetorical debate and start solving problems bit by bit. This requires more people who are capable of logical reasoning, or rather, more people of significant influence and those who have the most decision making power. The only way we can do this is to change the way that kids learn and socialize so that they have a diverse inventory of discourse to rely upon for when they solve problems both in the real world when they grow up and in their social lives as well.
Having unbridled power over people can transform someone to the extent that they ignore everything in their environment and lose all sense of empathy for any living creature. Just look at Stephen Harper for example.
How can you convince the average person that Bitcoin is a viable alternative or even supplement to real currency or that it is even worth paying attention to? (Rhetorical question, don't have to answer) At current, one has to mine for possibly two years, with decent hardware at that, just so they can get 50 BTC. Additionally, the number of BTC received via mining decreases by half after a certain number (~200,000) of BTC are in existence. In that same amount of time, a average joe with a high school diploma can complete a course, get a job, make more money, and purchase real assets.
The only use I can see for Bitcoin is if all financial infrastructure collapses and this currency is the only one left. However, the production and distribution of Bitcoin largely depends on the types of physical infrastructure (networks) that largely depends on a stable financial infrastructure. If you can't afford an internet connection or electricity, you can't use Bitcoin effectively enough to be remotely relevant.
Real question: How is Bitcoin going to gain acceptance when it is even more unstable than the currencies we already use, even if it is adopted widely?
Did you even read my post? I already said in different words what you said, plus I called this "theoretical".
Only flaw here is that the cost of doing business would outweigh the profits generated from selling the goods, if they even happen to be undamaged.
Of course most of the goods would be water damaged and corroded and there would be no feasible way of determining which containers have goods with water-tight packaging (those exist, you know). Anyone observant enough to read between the lines could tell that I was calling this stupid, but we're human beings and not exactly stupid-proof. We're bound to see someone try to reclaim these containers, heck, there's already people doing studies to explore them as this article implies.
I guess not reading TFA is considered passe and not reading TFC is the new chic.
I'm stretching the definition of grey as much as possible here. Anyone with the right resources could probably travel through these shipping routes and reclaim these lost shipping containers. If none of the contents get damaged, then they could probably be sold on the grey market since the manufacturers have probably already scratched these off their records already as losses. Only flaw here is that the cost of doing business would outweigh the profits generated from selling the goods, if they even happen to be undamaged. Also, any competition here would make this business unfeasible and possibly very bloody.
Too many companies develop enterprise software on the.NET Framework for them to just scrap it altogether. As people continue to use.NET, Microsoft will have to continue to support it and eventually develop new features to cater to developer needs..NET is here to stay for a long time.
Yeah, they really seem to have forgotten that someone can't write code unless they know how to think critically, solve logical problems, and pay extra, extra attention to detail. If someone can not learn these things, then they are not fit to be programmers, plain and simple.
In a capitalist society, a product that is "too expensive" if it doesn't sell. The iPad sells well. By definition, it isn't too expensive.
This fails to be true on a number of cases such as gas, food, healthcare (if not in Canada), diapers, etc. All of these essential items will always sell well regardless of price because these are things people have no choice but to purchase.
Also, expensive is a very relative term. An iPad is very cheap for someone like Donald Trump, but comes at too high a price for someone in China who is willing to sell his kidney for one. Basically, the definition of 'expensive' regardless of whether this is in a capitalist society or not is something that one can not or can barely afford, which is true for many people who have bought the iPad.
When I see stuff like this I get instantly suspicious and for good reason. Most services that cater to single men wanting companionship are so flooded with fake profiles of hot girls, spam links, etc. that I begin to associate a hot girl with someone who just wants something from me, be it attention, money, or just to screw with me.
Want this kind of thing to stop? Then don't take the bait. Don't give these attention whores and/or spammers what they want. Just pretend they don't exist and they'll go away and there will only be real women left. This probably won't happen because men in our society put women on such a high pedestal that it increases their 'theoretical stock value' above what is realistic, much like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc. With so many men going after so few attractive women, we undervalue our 'stock' so we often do not end up with the kind of women that reflect our intrinsic value. It doesn't take a genius to figure out how our attitudes towards women affects our society at least at the socioeconomic level. Increasing divorce rates are one symptom.
In conclusion, we collectively are responsible for the appearance of these bimbots, fake profiles, and why most Slashdotters will never find a girlfriend. Like advertisements, if we ignore them, they'll disappear.
... that Apple doesn't get a hold of the patent for this thing.
