Plus, this isn't entirely true. Third party developers are busineses also, the trend of exclusivity is almost over. Why would they stick to one console if they could sell more titles by cross platforming it? The truth is, Nintendo doesn't garner third party support becuase of their approval process. Sure they have some more mature games, and they gave some pretty great games too. But they are no where close to targeting the major gamer age demographic of 25-34. Sorry, thats core for developers. This demographic grew up on games - and they want games to grow up with them. There is one little problem with this perspective, not everyone searching for a term is searching for the same thing you are. When someone searches for an acronym, there are multiple possible results that could be returned. If those results are not what your looking for, that doesn't always mean that you were right and the search algo was wrong. Nor does it neccesarily mean that spammers have manipulated the rankings. Alot of the time, your search was flawed because of input. To point:

a search for "Lawrence" had some blog at the top, and today we get Lawrence University, the Lawrence, KS newspaper, and the Lawrence Livermore laboratories.

What if I was looking for Lawrence Fishburn? I don't see that at the top, so Lawrence University must have manipulated the rankings!

a few weeks ago, a search for "DOC" resulted in some annoying blog at the top of the results.

What if I wanted to know about the .DOC file extention, but I didn't know I should use the '.' in front?

It is popular opinion here to denounce any broad unfocused search that didn't return the desired results as manipulated by SEO or Spammers, and that is ridiculous. Google rotates its caches, data centers, and algos now. It is very difficult to game them under these new conditions. You say "we are winning the battle", that shit is ridiculous. If it's the battle against OBVIOUS spam, then I'm with you. But please quit thinking that your search perspective is the end all be all of how the rest of the world should search google. How about learning to use advanced search operators? Or perhaps searching for the correct criteria? How about using the Scholar search if you are looking for data or papers?

Google is attempting to make every search return relevant results for everybody, that's pretty god damn hard. For the sake of relevancy, they have been breaking searches down by verticals to facilitate this, and the move to a blog search is a logical progression. This should alleviate the horrible "a blog showed up in my lamely defined search" problem. But please people, have some accountability and learn how to use the damn tool before you begin jumping on the popular Slashdot diatribe.

I don't have to agree with everything you say, and you don't have to agree with everything I say, but the goal isn't to create converts. It's to gain a more complete and beneficial understanding of a subject. Such a dialog between two educated (or open minded) people, with opposing viewpoints, often ends with both parties revising their perspective to reflect the newly aquired information.

Unfortunately, this process breaks down because people either lack the esteem (or facts) needed to withstand criticism of their argument, or their motivations are not to reach greater understanding between disparate opinions - it is to create converts. This in turn creates a social climate where it is common practice to superficially accept the perpectives that are presented to you the "loudest". Those who lack the skills or motivation to create their own substantiated opinions are co opted by those with strong debate skills or seemingly fact based arguments. When one of these people is confronted with an opposing fact based argument, they revert to rehashing the argument that converted them in a weak attempt to feign educated debate. This does nothing, one side of the equation is only trying to create another convert. Since they really don't understand their own opinion, being that it was given to them, how can they discuss the intrinsics of it?

I salute your steadfastness in speaking your mind. Few people undersand the stamina needed to maintain composure when constantly assaulted with self supposed statements such as: "Actually, a majority of Americans do want just this thing. Deal with it."

The ability to create atmosphere would be enhanced tenfold. But these files will be huge and numerous. The Japanese developers do not enjoy when this design method is hindered. That's why Square jumped to Sony during the PS1 days. Cartridge format was costly and limiting. And the DVD-ROM format will be equally limiting. My moronic mistake of claiming a DVD-ROM layer could hold 15 GB works in my favor. These disks hold a little more than 4 GB per layer. That is significantly different from the blu-ray specs. The PS3 theoretically could play an awesomely rendered FMV background, an engaging middle layer due to the realtime code, and handle the player layer of physics, collisions, and rendering. The XBOX 360, while technically being able to handle this, would need to have comparable data fed to it bt TWO - THREE disks. That kinda cuts down on the fun. Either every chapter has its own disk, or you have to load multiple disks to play a level.

And the NFL decided to take it exclusive after Take Two started a price war with their $19.95 price point. Here's a link to the article. The other reason Take Two wanted non-exclusivity is because they couldn't afford it. That part of a contract is expensive. If they had wanted to get exclusivity take Two would have needed to raise its price back to the $50 range to cover costs. Then all the fanboys would have been screaming "See, once you get a lock - you gouge the price!" It would have been a fight with your customer base you will always lose. They never could have won the NFL contract, they never had enough juice.

Besides, the NFL is a business also. They like to make money and protect their property. They didn't like a pricing war being waged with their property at the center of it. Would you? They went with a solid standard that could pay the bills. When my company needs supplies, I don't always go for the lowest price, I also pay attention to quality. Corporations are definitely not allowed to exist to benefit the public. They may use that to validate themselves, but that is not their purpose.

There is nothing dishonest about an exclusivity contract. The NFL has every right to say who can use their property. And it is prudent business to choose someone with a consistent record of selling the most football games. EA would be idiots to allow their competition to get that contract. Once again, they did not initiate the talks. If 989 or someone else had gotten the exclusivity contract, people would be bitching that Madden didn't have any players or teams and that EA sucked for letting it happen.

the difference between making money and making it honestly is that you are working to benefit the public and yourself versus just benefitting yourself exclusively.

EA is making footbal games. That's about as beneficial to the public as penis pills man. EA is never going to save humanity with a football game. Neither was any other developer. And so what if it's a monopoly on NFL games? It's not a monopoly on football games. If a company locked down a whole genre, I could see the problem, but that's not the case here. No one prevented anyone from "benefiting the public" with their football games. One company just happens to have a tool that no others have.

Using your logic, a company with a superior game or physics engine should allow all other developers to use it to make games. Bullshit. What if other developers make games with content the engine makers felt was inappropriate? What if I make a kick ass physics engine and I decide that I only want it to be used to make racing games because I think all the existing racing games suck? Am I monopolizing the game industry for not allowing my engine to be used in other types of projects? It's called a free market. Keep it free, not regulated with your one man view of business ethics.

I think the problem lies in companies trying to "game" the distribution of movies, games, or music. Theses industries powerhouses rely on forcing people to buy what they say to buy.

The music industry is getting owned by the new methods of distribution available to musicians now. A startup band can reach way more people now than it could 10 years ago for roughly the same amount of cash. Thats cutting labels out of the deal, and they don't like that. The bands that embraced this mindset and methodology have done very well for themselves. Plus, these artists understand that touring is where they make their money, not album sales. The Music companies make money on HOW you get the music, not the music.

The movie indistry is having a similar problem. Theater ticket sales have slumped because A) the movies suck and B) People hate other people. Why sit in a theater to watch a movie for way too much when you can wait 2 months, and then pay half the price of a ticket to watch a movie at home, smoking a jay and drinking a beer - pausing to use the restroom when you wanted too AND being able to comment out loud about the movie without offending someone? A Disney exec said they were toying with the idea of releasing movies in theaters and on DVD simultaneously, and the theater industry went apeshit. They make money on HOW you watch a movie. Not the movie itself. The movie is to get your ass to the theater.

Games have the worst of both worlds. You have to make an initial investment on HOW you get your games. You choose a system (XBOX, PS2, or PC) and then you can only play games on that system for that system. To expand your choices, you have to buy another box. Now, game companies take a loss on the boxes (except for PC makers) and make it up on licensing. Well, if you begin making games that sell less - even if they are the baddest games on the planet - the license model is worth less cash. And that would in turn cause the console makers to scale back the specs of their systems so they could generate profits on the machine too (or take a smaller loss). Here's where PC games make it even more F'd up. They can ignore the distribution sytems of Sony and XBOX. ANYONE with enough desire can make a game for the PC. It just takes a little work. But, these games can only hit a segment of the market. It's very difficult to make a cool indy PC game and transfer that to a medium for an XBOX or PS2. You can burn music to CD, rip it from the CD, stream it, and hold it on a player in multiple formats. Movies can also be distributed in multiple formats playable on ubiquitous machines. This is not true of games. Games have non cross platform hurdles firmly entrenched. There is money to be made on "porting" a game from one outlet to another. The game industry profiteers have no urge to have a uniform gaming delivery standard like the other industries do (MP3, Wav, CD, DVD, VHS, MPEG, ect..) Creativity will ALWAYS get squashed when you have to pay the piper just to get the material out the door.

It spurs innovation."

Plus, Madden isn't going to live forever, and EA needed another property to attach it's football game to, and you can't beat the friggin NFL.

The majority of Nintendo's first party games are not "kiddie" games but games for EVERYONE

I may have to define what I call a kiddie game. I use the ERSB rating to detirmine what games are "kiddie" and what aren't. Now, that does not mean that kiddie games are no good, I love Magic Pengel, most Mario games, and Zelda games. This may have been misleading as when most people use the term kiddie they mean "targeted at kids".

But a recent PC running Windows XP SP2 and DOSBox still has a significantly bigger library than the PS3 will have, even though the PS3 (the closest console equivalent to a "more robust PC") can play PS2 and PS1 games.

This is true for many reasons. Namely, a longer timeline of existence and the number of homegrown developers, modders, and mapmakers for games. But most gamers are not hardcore. Your average gamer doesn't even know about sourceforge or what kind of indy games he can get for his PC. He only cares about what games he can play on the box he has. So while the number of games available for the PC is naturally greater than any other system, the percentage of the gamer population who take advantage of this is extremly disproportionate.

What specific kinds of "adult" themes do you want in your games? Discussions about broad generalities don't result in title recommendations.

That was a pretty general statement, as adult themes is a general area. When talking about me personally, I enjoy:

    • Tactical action (SOCOM, Rainbow 6, Splinter Cell, MGS)
    • Adult Storylines (GTA's, Shin Megami Tensei, sometimes a random Hentai game for laughs.)
    • Adult Humor and Cynicsm (Bard's Tale)
Now, I will agree that it is not necessary for a game to have an ESRB rating of M for these traits to be present, yet a majority of them do. Nintendo doesn't want to do that with their library. They themselves have admited to catering to a younger demographic.
