    So you will probably want a database and you also mentioned requirements suited to a GIS. I would set up PostGIS. PostGIS is Postgresql with an add-on for assisting in the storage of geographic elements. And it's all open source! GIS used to be a messy prospect with lots of files in different formats in lots of directories. Now that PostGIS has arrived, you can store all of your data in the database. This is nice because you have the power of a relational database to manage what you can view. You can do queries that result in Maps. Others have mentioned QGIS. QGIS plays nicely with PostGIS. You can start with the database, add in QGIS and later if you need to create a website you can add on open source Leaflet which lets you create interactive maps using JavaScript.

  5. Looks like Sweden and Finland are trying to create demand for electric vehicles. The combined population of those two countries is ~15 million. This would be great for increasing demand for batteries that work well in cold weather.

    With Norway going electric, there will be increased demand for batteries that work well in cold weather. Remember that the northern part of Norway is north of the Arctic Circle.

  7. With nuclear, they don't use electrolysis to split water, they use heat. Not sure what efficiency but much better than electrolysis. Process is called thermochemical water splitting. It's efficient because it doesn't require generating electricity as a step in the process, rather it uses the reactors own heat directly to fuel the operation.

    The purpose of solar energy is to suck in photons and produce electricity (or gather heat). They are not designed to flood airline pilots eyes with glare as that is wasting energy. (That would mean they are doing it wrong)

    1) Set up a personal 900 number
    2) ???
    3) Get on a PA system and broadcast the ultra-sonic message to call your 900 number
    4) Profit!!!

    The other exploit is step 3) just broadcast a normal audible message to call your 900 number

If you have a thermometer, some dry ice, a heat source like an incandescent light bulb and an enclosure like an empty aquarium and a sixth grader you can ask the sixth grader to verify for you that the CO2 greenhouse effect is, in fact, real. Further, you can also develop a model of the effect of more and less CO2.

    If the atmosphere in the tube is the same as at 200,000 feet, that is enough air to operate a scramjet which is an air-breathing supersonic combustion engine. Although it may seem backwards to do this, it may be an option assuming the vehicle can go fast enough for the engine's operational constraints. The evacuated tube should also be of interest to NASA as an alternate means of testing scramjet technology.
