    the costs of printing the book are tiny compared to the multiple editors, making the cover, and other costs of bringing a book to market.

    not like the author just writes a book. it takes 3 or more people to read it and correct hundreds of mistakes, send it back to the authoer, reread it, etc

    the problem is getting the book into the used market. a lot of people would just throw the book out because the prices paid by the used book stores like Strand were too low for most people to take the time to sell their books

    in a digital market that is yet to be seen and the uncertainty is what scares everyone

    sales, pre-sales tech support, tech support, IT and other jobs can work from home as well

    with home and cell phone plans being sold with unlimited minutes/calling it makes it easier and cheaper

    i work with people who work from home and offices in different states. everyone is always available and you know they are working because there are always emails flowing and tickets being done

    you can customize android for your environment. download it from AOSP and add any drivers you need, etc

    iOS, Win Phone and others are products you buy as is and use as is. most you can do with iOS is buy the enterprise software license to load your own apps outside the app store

    yeah, but these customers will take their money from the regular ISP's who may be forced to raise prices on their remaining customers, idiot

    the light users subsidize the heavier ones. take away the revenue from the light users and you need to raise prices. ISP's make very little PROFIT after ALL BILLS ARE PAID

    yeah, but lots of people like my inlaws who don't use too much will jump on this if it costs them $20 or $30 a month

    if i use less than 1GB per month on my iphone i'm sure there are lots of people who use the same on their home internet

    have her install a VNC server or the RDP client on her computer
    then configure her firewall to forward the ports to her computer
    then every time she calls have her look up her public IP on her wifi router so you can VNC into her computer

    or you can just have her install logmein or teamviewer to make it easy. unlike what most of the slashtarts will tell you
    or tell her to buy an ipad which is even better

    i have 2 iphones and an ipad in the house along with 3 laptops. the laptops rarely get used anymore. even the macbook

    the reason i use ARM on my iphone, ipad or android phone is that there are hundreds of thousands of applications to choose from to do different things

    every non-x86 platform for the desktop market has had a lack of software. the OS is useless by itself.

    i bet they have to type out your name, DL number and other info from your ID to match up to the ticket info.

    if you scan a credit card then that's already an identifying piece of info so they can get it from the database. since you have the CC in hand, you are probably the person who bought the ticket.

    security and lessening financial liability due to fraud. say you steal someone's CC to buy a ticket. you go to the counter with your ID and it will be easier to flag you. same for TSA requirements

    answer a question or two about checked luggage
    grab your ticket/key

    most times you talk to a person their computer system is some ancient software where the person has to type in war and peace to get the same thing done

    biometric device to keep track of your pulse, blood pressure. why buy the single use devices from the drug store?
    bike computer for biking
    the functions of the Nike fuelband and similar devices
    remote control for iphone while you are running/biking to skip songs, change playlist, etc

    it will probably be for people who see the light of day outside of cold basements and 24x7 staring at computer screens

    so are 7200 RPM drives. i remember when they came out in the 1990's and all the benchmarks said they weren't much faster than 5400 in real speed

    NCQ made the biggest difference. along with where the data was stored on the platter.
