There is a different between some racist twonk saying "ALL {X} MUST DIE!" (or other racist b.s.) and saying "Your message has no place here, and we're not going to allow it."
What I'm saying is that, for example, Facebook can already remove your posts for any reason or none. All this is doing is codifying some reasons why they might do so.
If any of those platforms were owned and operated by European governments, you might have a point. As they are completely optional to use (at least, I don't recall any laws saying using Twitter or Facebook were mandatory), and are not government agencies.....
Hardly the only time the Germans made a "bigger is better" mistake involving military production during the war. Hell, if they had stuck to one consistent tank design instead of trying to make supertank after supertank.... of course, it didn't help that the German tanks were such precision vehicles that they were very difficult to repair in the field.
Well, presumably, it's detecting the pressure changes as it's sinking. At, say, 300 or 400 psi, it would start the pressurization of the balloon. It wouldn't wait until it hit the bottom.
Hell, you could have it start at 200 psi, which is around 420 feet underwater.
I'm actually a bit surprised that there isn't some sort of redundant system installed in the black boxes that detects large amounts of pressure (from being, say, deep underwater) and pressurizes a flotation balloon around the black box.
Or perhaps it's just unfeasible for a multitude of reasons.
I believe that the idea behind not allowing sale of the flavoured ones was something like "The flavoured ones sort of kind of taste almost candy-like. This will entice the children into trying them at an earlier age, and get them addicted to smoking. Therefore, it is bad. We shall only allow selling the normal ones, which taste terrible, because no child has ever smoked cigarettes before in all of history."
Yeah, but of course the lawyers for Fitbit are going to say it's a bad study. One, they are supposed to zealously defend their client, and two, they're hardly likely to fold this early in this thing, based off of one study, no matter how accurate it may be. Attack by opinion is the unfortunate standard.
That's cute how you think law enforcement is concerned with actually enforcing laws against themselves.
We can't even get cops to keep their body cameras on when they're supposed to be using them, despite the fact that it cuts down on allegations of police abuse. But heaven help you if a cop catches you filming them, even in a jurisdiction where it's completely legal to do so.
Well, now, that all depends on the nature of the grant, doesn't it? It's not just "publish or perish" any more. It's (to a large extent), "how much grant money do you bring in"?
That's the two main ways to tenure. Either you publish a lot of papers (usually peer-reviewed ones) or you bring in a ton of grant money. If you can't or won't do either, don't expect to get tenure unless you have some really juicy blackmail on the Dean.
There have been some exceptionally ignorant statements from politicians concerning renewable energy. It hasn't been exclusively from Republicans, but the lion's share of them have been. Mind you, a couple of those statements are taken out of context, but the general gist of it is that we shouldn't worry about switching to renewable forms of energy or climate change because Jesus.
But it also means that it's more difficult to stuff the ballot box, as it were. I mean, anyone can pony up the amount of cash it takes (what, something like $60, right) to be able to vote on the Hugos. If you don't meet the qualifications for SFWA membership, you CANNOT vote on the Nebulas.
So, yeah, it's a much more insular bunch, taken from a certain point of view. But it also means you don't have a rabble rousing idiot like Beale getting huge whacks of votes for a predetermined slate.
Just a shot in the dark here, you understand, but if it's a country that has limited opportunities for women to go to school (especially college), but still needs highly educated people for certain positions, then by default, it's largely going to be the men who are educated and trained for those jobs.
I mean, come on, that's a no-brainer. "Hey, in {insert country} where women aren't allowed to go to medical school, why are all the doctors guys?"
Okay, wait. How the screaming hell does one take over atheism? "You're don't not believe enough!" "You're not believing in the wrong way!" "Atheists unite under this belief system, wait, oops..."
I think you're ascribing 'changes in society' to 'shadowy cabal of people what have to exist because it has to be a conspiracy against meeeeeee'.
Nope. But are you aware that last year, four out of the six nominees were guys? And one of them one. Here's a thought (I know, that might be strange to you), maybe.... maybe the reason they won this year was because they were voted as the best?
That it's not some overarching conspiracy to make you feel frustrated and upset from the depths of your mom's basement?
Er, no.

As they had a $358 million IPO, that dingdong thought "Hey, I bet I can make a lot of money."

Don't take the chance, man. Turn off all your devices, close the curtains, cancel mail delivery, and wrap tin foil around your head.
You don't know the people who run Slashdot. Should you keep posting?
All I'm saying, is there's reasonable caution, and there's outright bloody paranoia.
Well, #nsareadingallmytweets was taking up a few of the 140-character limit.....
The GP was referring to their personal preference order (aka I like this one the most, this one the second most...), not sequential order.
... I feel dumber, just for having read that statement. I can award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

I was going to go with an infinite number of monkeys with typewriters, but okay....

Scroll down to 2015 (which is last year), chucklenut.
You know, I'm not saying it doesn't exist, but I'm hard pressed to think of any post-apocalyptic utopia fiction.
"Oh yes, the rest of the world has gone to shit, radioactive wastelands, mutants, and so forth. But, it's just lovely here."
