Try Approcket. It's a direct clone of Launchbar for Windows.
Only it looks like they've taken down the download for the moment, in preparation of final release.
This question has been asked and answered in every Gates philanthropy story that has ever hit slashdot. But it looks like you're new, so I'll give you the short version.
Bill's donation, as others have pointed out, is made up in large part by one or more pieces of paper stating how many machines may be installed with MS software.
Linus had already given them great software. He and others made it and gave it away, with no strings attached, for third world countries to use on as many systems as they want. Not only that, but they are given free reign to change and customize it to their needs, building their skills in the process.
I applaud MS for putting out some cash, but if it's tied to an MS product deployment, they're better off sending it back.
How was it original or cool in any way? The guy assembled a PC, downloaded some software, and clicked setup.exe. Even if he had managed to install an open source solution I don't think it should be front page news. The experience is well documented at this point.
TiVO has recently (within the past 6 months or so) started supporting certain cable boxes via the serial port
Nope, not a recent development. My Tivo is one of the first series 2 models that came out. I've been using it with my comcast digital cable box for well over a year.
My first cable box didn't have the interface, but when it pooped out, I got my cable guy to look for a new box that did have serial. He found it, and I was happy to tip him that day. Works MUCH faster than a blaster.
I know windows that turn from clear to opaque have been on the market for at least a couple of years. When I was at an AT&T Network Operations Center in Singapore, they had this between the NOC and an adjoining conference room. I had just sat down in what looked like a fairly typical, non-desccript conference room, when one of the guys there hits a button on a remote control, and suddenly the color on the glass wall fades and the NOC is there in plain sight. It was quite impressive.
BTW- a little door and two metal contacts would be trivial to add.
Then it would be like all my other handheld electronics. It's always fun when I drop my cell phone or PDA and the battery cover pops off in one direction, while the battery itself dives under the nearest furniture. It's especially fun in the checkout lane at the supermarket.
You mean like dragthing or XBar? Obviously these are OS X apps, but it sounds like the right concept.

You can always get one and scrape your program listings using the hacks at tivocanada.com. That doesn't give you HoMO, though.

Agreed. Sexual preference can only be accurately associated with desktop computing environments.
If an Xbox with halo makes you a geek, I'm turning in my membership card.
Now you're just being silly. Running a dedicated physical medium all that way would never work. You're better off using FTP, or setting up a .torrent
But did remember to include the new cover sheet?
Which means you can't get a girlfriend and you never have sex.
You're missing a DMZ port. If you're hosting any externally available services, and/or running wireless, you need a separate untrusted segment.
I was going to suggest you try ebaY, but at those prices, I'd stick with dumpster diving.
I think it would have been funnier if he had been called as a witness to a murder.
Spend a lot of time on ebay, do ya?
Look up your local LUG and find out when they are scheduling the next installfest.
Sounds great until you get to page 4 of the AUP, which states they prohibit servers. I rarely do host anything at home, but I like to know that I can.
My old man consoled me with this gem:
"You know the difference between a wife and a job? After 6 months, the job still sucks."

If you want to run openoffice without X, try the (very) beta NeoOffice.
Same here. I'm going to head over to Speakeasy. Not quite as good a deal, but they give static addresses and their reputation seems strong.
Another search engine that you might enjoy for its mapped results is Kartoo. Take a look at the flash version.
Doh! Sorry - didn't see that there is indeed a closed, but active beta.
