We can use the cellulose from cardboard boxes. That way we go to the store, recycle the boxes our stuff comes in for more gas, and be able to drive to the store again to buy more stuff. Maybe we could make it a national imperative to buy more stuff in cardboard boxes and save the economy at the same time. This can't be any worse than the energy policy we currently have.

This is just a green friendly suggestion. I await my prize.

... i thought this story's title read, "the return of ABBA."

ABBA was an early 80's rockband. ADA was an early 80's programming language. ABBA is seeing a resurgence in interest now. ADA is also seeing increased in interest now. ABBA consisted of four singers, and ADA consisted of four programming languages.

Coincidence? I too think not. Take a chance on it.

I would really like to know what the ROI on the international space station *really* is. A couple of guys chewing bubble gum while circling the earth. I would have much rather have seen those billions go to kids.

I think you are right. I think there is a reality distortion field, but it's not around Obama. It's around space nuts who don't want to see a dime cut from NASA.

The shuttle was a waste of money too, as it never delivered on it's original promises. I love space and the space program, especially the unmanned probes. The fact is, we get far more bang for the buck from the space probes than we have the shuttle program or the ISS (that even NASA wants to decommission by 2012). I think the Hubble is worthwhile, but I can't help but wonder if with the billions spent on servicing missions if it would have not been cheaper to send a new one up on an unmanned rocket.

The fact is, a man in space, in my opinion, is no longer worth the investment. Anything that a man can do, a machine could do better, at less cost, and with less hazard. So much as sending a man up for "inspirational purposes," the fact is that the cost for that "inspiration" is huge. In case you haven't noticed lately, our economy is in the tank and we can ill afford endless programs with open ended budgets, which "man in space" has been, and will always be.

Obama gets my vote on this topic alone. Though I wish he would cut it "outright" rather than "delay" it. Maybe this is his way of doing it so that people will see that they really won't be missing anything at all.

I fail to see how the FCC helped the ham radio industry flourish. Because you do not know your history. Start with the Communications Act. The fact that it was a political decision might mean that it was not the best, but at the same time ham radio did not originate from a vacuum.

What's so great about the license that people cherish it? Are you a teenager?? Because you must not remember a time when there was no internet, computers, semiconductors even. I cherish the contacts that I made accross the world in a time it was not possible by any other means. Now that there is an internet, everyone takes this for granted like clean drinking water. But I find myself, being away from the radio for some time, returning to it. I realize that I had acquaintances that knew how to be polite with each other working torwards common technical goals. As compared to the abrasiveness and rudeness that the internet seems to bring forth so readily today. Frankly, I'd rather have the former as friends.

Are you suggesting that the license or the licensing process is what got those people into the field of ham radio? Yes, I am. Otherwise you would be operating a transmitter illegally (unless you were a CB'er, but even they required a license in the early days). Other than that, you were just an electronic hobbyist. Not everyone was a ham, but for many of those that were, it really was a door unto the world. I guess you would have to have be there to appreciate it, as maybe everyone with an internet connection now can't. Nowadays, there are many ways that you can operate a transmitter legally (e.g. part 15 or CB) without a license. But, as I have realized, it simply does not have the same community that ham radio does.

As I said, there really is no reason for somebody not to get a ham license if they so desire. There is no morse code requirement, so that's not an excuse anymore. Other than not being interested in radio technology that is.
