    My site is also non technical, visited by a good cross section of the world (germany is like 20% of the hits). My stats for yesterday (on 70,000 hits) was 92% IE (or impersonating IE), with most of the opera hits coming from myself ;)

    I've always wondered about the impersonation idea, on the one hand it lets you into sites with idiot designers who think there's nothing outside IE/NS, but on the other it cloaks how many people are actually using your browser...

    Wow, that's a new low for Microsoft. Not only are they copying their playlists but they're also selling the streams on the local call letters *and* their taglines. Pretty low business move, even if it's not technically illegal. However if any of these stations have a trademarked slogan then they have grounds to sue MS.

    When reading the book Masters of Doom which is a biography of the id guys' history, the author goes into the diakatana development. Romero finally realized that no matter how much work they put into their game based on the quake engine, id was going to come out with the quake2 engine and their contract said that they couldn't get the API until after quake2 came out. Therefore id had a several month lead with their new engine. Romero couldn't release the game on the old engine, and he couldn't wait the months to come out with the new engine. At some point 3d realms will just have to say "it's done" and cut bait.

    It appears that his host is onlinehome-server.com which has a price list at here which shows their max monthly bandwidth as being between 25 and 100 gigs. At 90k/s bandwidth (their end) that's 324 megs/hour/person, so assuming 10 people do it it would take 30 hours each to hit their cap. 100 people could do it in 3.

    Sounds like fun :)

    Interestingly, in order to take a helicopter flight that buzzes the statue all you had to do was leave your bags in a locker at the heliport, and to let them wand you and photocopy your drivers license.

    It's pretty amazing how competition drives people. When Scaled put its craft into space they were the only team that anyone thought would have a chance to win the prize. Now with a deadline set another team comes out of the woodwork and has a craft ready for an attempt.

    Of course, it's probably not really ready to go, they just don't want to miss a chance at the prize. I'd hate to be the pilot picked to fly that one...

    Last year's 35 mile shot was indeed over the horizon. The team had to hike up a mountain in the rain to get high enough to make the shot. They actually assembled the antenna right there in the wilderness!

    The problem is that Google would have to rely on the site to tell them what was a sale. The company just has to underreport the sales and they can save money, and screw google.

    However, the actual speed of mach varies. Mach is the speed of the object vs the speed of sound. The speed of sound changes with medium and temperature, so if they fly at 95,000 feet then mach 10 is 6730mph vs 7610mph at sea level. 6730mph is 1.8 miles/second vs 2.1 miles/second at sea level. - Wikipedia

    And after all that work I realize that your method is indeed close enough for most people :)

    What? You want to rifle through stacks of easily-damaged media every single time you want to run a program? What if you want to run two programs at once? What about how slow the CD's are, or if a program fits on two or more CD's and you have to keep changing?

    You must not remember the hell that CD switching was back in the 90's when hard drives were too small to copy the whole CD onto.

    Doesn't this seem like a huge conflict of interest? I realize that there's no laws against it, but wouldn't the other MPAA members worry that this guy's kid works for only one of the member companies?

    id pretty much created the consumer 3d graphics card industry. I remember being in college at a LAN party playing quake. We were hiding under the water and got hit with a rocket on the first shot. How did he do it? GLQuake with a 3dfx card had transparent water.

    After seeing how amazing the game looked and played with a special 3d card, most people dumped the $150 to get the 3dfx. By the end of the term everyone had a 3dfx, and the "cool" people had SLI voodoo2's.

    I got an account, but it's pretty much useless to me. For some strange reason the site doesn't work at all with Opera. They had some weird javascript with their buttons that made it not work. A big departure from the normal Google design methodology.

    Carmack has built an extremely detailed flight simulator for their vehicles. They can test all sorts of modifications, including flying the vehicle in the simulator with the actual hardware used to control the flight vehicle.

    So I'd say his experience with 3d modeling and such has been very helpful :)

    Actually I'm almost positive that the driver doesn't drive the course (excluding previous year's races). I saw a speed channel special on it and they talked about how the co-driver rides along on the course taking down notes the day before the race, then has to be able to read his own handwriting while bouncing down the road the next day :)

    If you want to see some truely amazing driving check out WRC. 120mph on a frozen mountain road with a driver who doesn't know the course (the passenger says things like "turn right next" in order to navigate.

    Um, in regards to the materials being created in particle accelerators... The physics are very well understood, they're not just creating random stuff, they're creating things that have been predicted from the equations. I know stuff like "the omega particle" make good sci-fi, but realisticly it's not the threat TV makes it out to be.

    However as a recruiting tool, you'd think they'd want to focus on the "fun" aspects of war, like building things, teamwork, driving big vehicles around, blowing things up. If they can cause post traumatic stress syndrome via a video game it probably won't help to recruit anyone except those with a death fetish.

    While there were some bushes off to the sides, the main roadway (dirt) was clear of any plants. Most likely the vehicle (TerraMax in this case) got off course and was unable to get back to the road. They needed a watchdog feature, if you back up 20' and there's still an object, ignore it and go forward. They backed up for half a mile before hitting the kill switch. Also, there wasn't any rain... The skies were clear and ground dry when we got there at 4:30am...
