Of course, even so, Macs are not suitable for Serious Business Use.
Hmm. Judging from some of the responses I got to this, I should have used explicit sarcasm tags.
I support Macs for a college -- I'm well aware that they are perfectly suited to anything that a typical office requires. I just think it's sort of odd that a reliable computer with quality hardware, a pretty much crashproof OS that's Unix-based to boot, and the best office suite on the market is usually dismissed out of hand as being for "graphics and stuff."
Serious Business Use [tm] is not a problem, but Macs have an unjust reputation as being too lightweight to handle it.
The mac versions of MS apps are usually nicer, and sometimes more feature laden than their windows counterparts.
I always thought it was funny that the only element of Office that _didn't_ start on the Mac is Access, which is widely derided for being such a complete and utter piece of shit.
Of course, even so, Macs are not suitable for Serious Business Use.
Oh, well. I've got one on my desk, and really, that's all that concerns me.
According to this article on Yahoo, the FCC will require all US wireline, cellular, and broadband PCS carriers to provide law enforcement with surveillance capabilities by June 30th.
Well, I certainly hope this helps us put a stop to those pesky terrorists. After all, look how well the RICO laws worked at eliminating organized crime.
Actually, RAID is "redundant array of independent disks."
Not to be confused with RASDA, the Randomly Accessed Shitty Drive Array. This term was coined a couple years ago by myself and some friends when we realized we all had three or four relatively low capacity drives in our systems because we were all too poor to buy new hardware.
But this might give you the motivation to upgrade to 7.3 once it's out, assuming your system is up to the increased hardware requirements (offhand, I'd say 400 MHz CPU, 128 MB RAM would do).
Ah. I was having speed issues running it on a P75 with 24M of memory. Glad to see it wasn't just a misconfiguration issue on my part.
Honestly, I'm far more interested in using Viewsonic's ViewPad -- they're billing it as a "super-PDA," but it's really just a nice tablet computer. 10" TFT screen, built in 802.11, and onboard storage.
Anyone tried getting Linux running on one of these yet? I'd love it for my house, but I'm not about to drop the 1100 dollars of the lowest price on Pricewatch just to try and get it running, and I don't know of any decent X servers for WinCE.
Does seem odd that they wouldn't offer it in Quicktime -- it's not like the target audience can't view it. If you've got Linux installed and running, and thus no way to see Quicktime streams, you're a little beyond the introductory video. Ah, well.
As for the Flamebait mod, looks like they're still handing out free Drano chunks and telling the mods its crack.
Is there any way to upgrade from YDL 2.1 to 2.2? I'm running a rather customized install of 2.1, and I really don't want to go through the hassle of doing it again.
(Perhaps more importantly, is there any way to install X without KDE or Gnome in this version? I'm running it on a 7200/120, for crissake; fvwm or blackbox are more than enough, especially with a lousy 2 gigs of storage to work with.)
Bertelsman, which already invested a significant amount of money in Napster, is now looking to buy Napster outright.
I wonder if they'd be interested in buying a 1982 AMC Spirit with a blown engine. My neighbor's got one just sitting there, and these people sure sound like suckers to me.
Think about it... how about plugging your gba into your network and firing up a gamespy type utility on your gba
If only I could code worth a damn - this would be a great toy to port tcpdump to. Set it up to fill a flash EPROM and dump it all across the 'net to one of my own boxen, maybe, and leave it sitting in a drop ceiling somewhere.
Though, it is considerably cheaper than Microsoft Office. If they can work out the bugs and slight incompatability problems, it would be a good thing. Especially the problems with printing. What company can get by without being able to properly print out their documents?
Once again, I would recommend AppleWorks 6 from (surprisingly enough) Apple Computer. It's import and export features are good enough that everyone at work thinks I'm using MS Office, and the Mac/Win combo CD is only 39 dollars at the Apple store for Education online.
Looks like Apple is expanding their grasp on the film editing industry
I don't know if the software portion of Apple exactly has a "grasp" on film editing -- the hardware seems to get paired up with custom software from companies like Avid and Media 100.
Don't get me wrong, Final Cut Pro is a hell of a program, but it seems more of a median between iMovie and a serious editing package.
(I don't work in the field, but I work at a college with a pretty well-funded video editing program. So I could be mistaken; this is just my impression.)
Funny, I've always considered its stability to be more of an advertisement for BSD.
Send the mac addicts back to macslash.
Hmm. I'm typing this on a Mac, which is my main machine, but from where I'm sitting I can see a Linux/PPC machine, a RedHat machine, and two OpenBSD machines (i386 and Sparc). That's just at home -- I won't get into what I've got sitting at work.
So do I still have to leave, you contentious prick?
Someday someone will successfully implement something like Progeny's NOW and all of these assorted hacks at building a distributed computing system will be superseded.
While we're wishing for things, can I have a pony?
(Adding text because apparently it hasn't been long enough since I hit reply.)
I have a Quadra 660 AV sitting in the closet collecting dust. I was wondering if anyone knew of a linux distro for an 040 mac and could point me in the right direction.
Debian would be a good choice. I ran it briefly on a Quadra, and the performance was pretty good for a machine of that era.
So far as I know, they're the only native-English distro for m68k.
(You might want to read this page as well -- it's a little summary I wrote for installing another OS on a Mac with limited disk space.)
why and how they are currently inventing a new business model dedicated to Free-Software oriented companies, since the traditional business models fail for these companies.
Hey, how about some dedicated FTP bandwidth for club members? I know the release of the PPC-8.2 may well flatten the public servers.
Oh, goody. This means the market will soon be flooded with significantly more advanced and realistic deer-slaying simulators.

This means that new versions of Office, IE, ODBC, and Palm synchronization will be made available for Mac OS X.
...and I will continue using Appleworks, Mozilla, and Palm Desktop, because I don't want to support MS any more than strictly necessary.
It's a shame that the Mac developers who put out stuff like Office:Mac are working for such an ethically bankrupt company. They do really good work.

I wonder if they're doing the things the X10 ads imply they might be doing.
Yeah, because hot chicks in skimpy outfits love guys with nothing better to do than fuck around with obscure protocols.
That's one of the many reasons RMS gets all the ladies, right?

Ok what is the exact definition of "hardware"?
The part of the computer you can kick when the fucking thing just won't cooperate.

Simple things like combining the wrong mainstream motherboard chipset with the wrong mainstream sound card can screw a whole system
