The problem is that Apple doesn't ship any systems with ADC connectors either. I don't care if I can use them on a Dell, but having a whole shelf full of Apple displays that I can't use on a new Apple computer is annoying.
The only one on that entire list that *Apple* actually wanted to make a "standard" in any sense (outside of their own hardware) was FireWire. The rest all did exactly what they were supposed to do for their respective markets, they certainly were not Apple failures in any way whatsoever.
As someone who's got a storage room full of ADC 15" flat panels at work, I would disagree with that.
Don't you see how much better the new version is? It's got 2007 in the name!
Oh, it's just last year's version with the new rosters. Oh, and a flashlight thing so that you can see the chambers the way your Congressman does. They call it "HR Vision" or something.
I was surprised that Enigmail wasn't listed; for GPG integration into email, it's a great tool, simple to use. I've even got some of the departments that deal with sensitive data at work using it, and they are _not_ technical people by inclination.
I recently put a new hard drive in my laptop; here's a great time-saver with Debian. First, get a list of all of the packages that are installed:
dpkg --get-selections > package_list.txt
Store the list somewhere safe, along with your repository list. Swap drives, install the new OS, copy your old list of repositories into/etc/apt/, and then:
That will download and install (almost) every single package that was on your old machine. I got everything migrated, including hundreds of installed packages and everything in/home, in less time than a base install of Windows XP Home on another machine.
I work at a college, and I'm looking into using our Course Management Software (we use Blackboard, but there are Free alternatives) for some of our training. That allows for interactive lessons, testing, etc. and the person can go back and reread what they like later on.
I've been using my Christmas vacation to play through _Wasteland_ again. Man, what a brilliant RPG that was. A complete universe in seven or eight commands, and sixteen colors.
I personally feel we should do to cell phone users what we do to smokers these days: set up designated "cell phone" zones and otherwise ban cell calls in most buildings. But, then again, that's my bias as one of the few people left in the US without a cell phone.
Can we do that for people who eat that putrid microwave popcorn, too?
Uh, WTF does this have to do with "News for Nerds"?
Don't get me wrong, I'm a Green Party-voting liberal, but I don't see how this is even remotely in line with the supposed purpose of this site. I mean, do we really need another ten thousand Bush-bashing posts?
I'm honestly surprised that Apple hasn't partnered with any of the major leagues to sell game broadcasts on the iTMS. I know a lot of rabid Bills fans elsewhere in the nation who would happily pay to see the Sunday games.

Of course, according to some pastors, that star is only a few thousand years old. It barely predates The Flood.

There has long been a disconnect between academic computer security and underground forums like Black Hat and Phrack.
Just because "academics" don't introduce themselves as such to the script kiddies, doesn't mean that we're not around.

Porchmonkey? I'm taking it back. It's okay.

My employeer has both a "penison" and a 401K - I only have faith in the 401K.
Penison, apply directly to the... ah, nevermind.

Yeah, trolling Slashdot should certainly be a much higher priority than looking for employment or attending grad school. Good point.

Wherever will I find gold-plated $30 USB cables?
Oh, okay, Best Buy will still be open.

Is anyone running the SGI port? I just got a couple of decommissioned O2s from work, and I'm wondering what to install on them.
(I've already got one running Irix at home, so that's covered.)

Talking to the computer, even if it works perfectly, is still ackward.
It's more than that. It's downright synful.

It actually looks sort of like the old Launcher from Mac OS 9. I always liked that interface.

Additionally, so can I, also. Too.
