then again maybe this will help me make up for all the hallucinigens i never got when i was younger...

i work in transit consulting, and would be tickled to see even regional cooperation in fare collection. Of course, one of the big hurdles is that transit in the U.S. is generally all sorts of little authorities, transit districts, and other independent government instruments.
one solution? EZPass-style collection, where the agencies divide up the dough after charges are incurred, according to whose facility (bridge, road, whatever) was used...
of course, for that to work, you have to tell them who you are and where you've been... ;)

    good luck...

we were looking into it recently, not because we wanted to install atariOS or anything like that, but because our favored windows version was not available, but we had licenses so we could install the OS ourselves.

after going to a few manufacturers' websites, it became apparent that many aren't willing to sell a laptop w/o windows installed. finally i think we just called on the phone (to one of the bigger manufacturers) and begged. ;)

  11. manufacture vs. research on IBM Bails Out of the Hard Drive Market · · Score: 5, Interesting
what i don't think this article talks much about is whether or not IBM will continue to conduct the voluminous research it has traditionally done relative to data storage. IBM has patents on tons (a technical term) of HDD and related technologies; the company has a hand in many such products, even when their name isn't on the label.

personally, i hope they keep their labs working on the research end of data storage, because i'm not sure that there's anyone else to pick up the slack. if there isn't, the pace of "bigger capacity, faster, smaller footprint, more, more, more ..." just might slow down a little.

good point...if the stuff loaded into the memory is bad, then you still need to reboot. The memory may not be volatile, but that doesn't help you if you don't want to keep what's in there...and if your computer's dying, you may not be able to reload the memory (computer not responding). still sounds like rebooting will be very necessary, in my reading of the article.

could be that or any number of reasons...seems to me that the reason they've chosen (which is aalmost certainly part of the total story) is just a convenient one to push CD protection.

To me it's sort of like Oracle pushing the national demographic database idea, or for that matter many anti-privacy politicians (e.g., the U.S. atty. general, et al) pushing new laws limiting freedoms.

Certainly there's some grain of truth or value in the reasoning they give, but they make the issue (pick whichever one you like) look much simpler than it really is...

  21. lack of regulation & lack of understanding on Document Retention And E-mail · · Score: 1
personally, i think one of the most interesting aspects of this topic, in addition to the lack of document retention regulations for email, is the lack of understanding on the part of many in power to make such regulations or implement such regulations.

for example, my boss, God love him, has no idea how email works from the server end. frankly, we would-be administrators don't have the best understanding of it either.

with this in mind, i think one of the most interesting things to see is how any document retention scheme would be implemented by many smallish and medium sized businesses. of course, i'm thinking that we may not have the appropriate skills or facilities to carry out a doc reten policy that the government might impose. the other possibility -- more likey in an Enron case, is that employees might purposefully botch such a policy.
