Yes its cheaper, but the main problem is that you end up with an opposite profit motive. In most privatized goverment exist to create competition. Prisons don't compete (unless they are completly horrible and get shut down), but they do have a profit motive in repeat customers. While the government has a motive in non repeat offenders.

I'm sure there are a few other examples. But yes, for the most part I agree with you... Though I still don't understand whats with the popularity in private prisons. They simply don't work. BTW my employer monitors juvenile prisons education for DOE, I see the crappness of private juvenile centers on a regular basis. And I'm sure this translates well to adult prisons also.

It seems like they would have come clause in their free box request thingy, to ensure you use the boxes for shipping via fedex, and not for personal use. I had no idea you could get tons of free fedex boxes, if I had known I might have gotten em last time I needed boxes. Anyways, if they don't have such a clause, they need to fix it. If they do, they need to prosecute this guy for violating that clause, in effect stealing their boxes. Otherwise they need to STFU.

Believe it or not $199 the operating system is not where Microsoft makes most of its money. It sells XP really cheap to dell and the likes, and sells only a few boxed versions. Its real money is in the server market where it makes tons of money on its high end software. XP is simply a product to create lock-in so it can sell its servers or office software.

But how would more games help Apple. Apple doesn't make much money from OS X, and it probably never will. Its money was always from sale of its hardware. If you can run it on any X86, there goes that profit line completly. Though I could see apple doing some sort of driver verification thing, where if you didn't have apple branded MB and apple branded video card etc, even if they were the same thing.. It wouldn't run. Then make the hardware vendors pay a fee for making apple hardware. This could work to consumers advantage even, because apple has historically been known as a stabler operating system, mainly because they can contol what hardware goes into it. So if you want a stable computer go apple, and as a side advantage you will probably get a stable window system to dual boot into.

You forget that populating into space will in no way reduce population on earth. Current birth rate is around 150 million a year. Luckly death rate follows that closely. Unfortunatly you would have to transport atleast a million people a year off this rock to have even the slightest effect. I don't see that happening anytime soon. So while colonising other planets will help the human race survive it won't stop the need for population controls as you speak of. So realistically you have to be for both.
