  1. Re:code reuse on 2008 Olympics Aiming For Open Source · · Score: 2, Informative

They sort of do that, to a point. Atos Origin, formerly SchlumbergerSema, formerly Sema, was contracted to provide the IT services for four games starting with the 2002 Winter Games in Salt Lake City. The software for the 2002 games was written from scratch (since IBM had performed that duty in previous games) and those systems will evolve through to the Beijing games in 2008.

There could probably be some good arguments for having the IOC take control of the IT services, or a portion of them, but I believe that responsibility currently resides with the body organizing the respective games (Athens, Torino, etc).

  2. Re:Disappointing photos on 2008 Olympics Aiming For Open Source · · Score: 1

This close to the games, most of that equipment will have been moved to its respective venue and to other "undisclosed" locations. That allows them to start performing technical rehersals from where the action will actually take place. Pending availability of the venues, of course.

However, before the games, while they're performing integration testing on all of the software, the amount of equipment that they stuff into the integration test lab is impressive. I spent 14 months in the integration test lab for the 2002 Winter Games and I lost count of the number of computers. I'm guessing it somewhere in the order of 100+ Sun servers and easily 150-200 Windows machines to support the sports and all the central applications. Most of that was moved to the venue as the sports moved, but some remained for patch testing during the games.

  3. HP 48GX on Recommendations for RPN Calculators? · · Score: 1

I'm a firm believer in the idea that it's not which calculator you have, but whether or not you know how to use it. The 48G was my first real calculator (purchased in '93) and even though I've tried others along the way I still come back to it because I know how to use it. With that said, I still believe that the HP 48GX is the best calculator made. I don't know as much about the S series as I used to, but I imagine that it would be a pretty smooth transistion to move to the GX. A 48G or 48G+ would probably be enough, and cheaper, but they seem to be difficult to find these days.

I picked up a couple of 48GX calculators as backups from Samson Cables earlier this year. He's an authorized HP dealer and it seems like he still has some in stock, although the price has gone up since I bought mine.

Does anyone happen to know if the shuttles use pressure relief valves on the wheels similar to those on commercial airplanes? I've seen these valves in action, not in person, but in the PBS documentary about the design and building of the Boeing 777 21st Century Jet. These valves allowed the tires to safely deflate after an enormous amout of heat was generated by the wheel and brake systems during a braking test of the 777. Although I don't know much about the systems of the shuttle, it seems that if there was any chance of the tires exploding and causing any sort of flight critical failure that an item like these valves would be a no brainer.

i thought magnesium was highly flammable or something...

The magnesium auto parts I have seen, at least the parts going into consumer vehicles, are alloyed with some sort of flame retardant. In some General Motors cars, the actual structure of the dashbord is comprised of a single magnesium casting, so fire retardance is important.

While the price break on the the iBook in combination with the speed increase is a good thing, they've also removed the ability to upgrade the optical drive from a CD-ROM to a DVD on the cheapest iBook. You now have to buy the next model up to be able to play a DVD. True, the next iBook is only $1299, which is only $100 more than the cheapest version of the previous line of iBooks, it's still a $300 upgrade just to play a DVD. That $300 will buy you other niceties such as a faster processor, a 30 GB hard drive, and more video memory, and the DVD drive is also a CD-RW drive. I still want one, but it's now made the iBook a more expensive purchase than it was before and harder to justify.

The pay may not be great and you'll probably work your ass off while you're there, but you'll meet more people from all over the world than you could ever imagine. If you do it right, it's easy to set yourself up to work for future Olympics as well. After Athens, the next games are in Turin, Italy (2006) and Beijing, China (2008). I worked in IT for the Salt Lake games and I wouldn't trade that experience for the world. In fact, had I not decided to stay in the states to finish my CS degree, I would have moved on myself.
