I was the FIRST person in the world to use the nick "MasterHacker" (with or without a space) since the first BBS days, I found it really annoying when people used it on IRC and stuff like that.

Now how about this one- I was the very FIRST person in the world to use the nick "Wanderer" anywhere for any reason. How can I make this claim?

I was using the damn nick in early 1976 ! And used it ever since then, from multiplayer games on atari 400s and 800s to vic-20s, TSR-80s, C64 hacking, later on PC BBSes, and onward.

its a weirdly personal thing. Something thats been *mine* for decades, literally, suddenly showing up somewhere by some gimp that doesn't know squat.
    It really does feel weird.

and then you try using odd names you think no one else will guess. "ByteMe", that is another one I coined first. It's fun. And it gets taken all the time now.

it got to the point where it was almost impossible to log onto an IRC server for a while, every single name I tried, they were all taken, I mean everything.
Even my fabled "RouterSlayer" has been "stolen" by others, as well as my fabled "BitSlayer", yes even "NetSlayer". it was all me... used to be anyhow.

The point is, how the hell can you be original any more? Where's the uniqueness when every single name is already taken, how to identify YOU, you want your personality in there somewhere. something different from the norm.

I came up with a new nick recently, its actually borrowed from something. I will never say what it is or where I got it. But so far, no one has copied it. We'll see how long this lasts. Cuz after that, I dunno any more. Maybe I can think of something new, fresh, and unique.

But it's getting damn hard these days.

Also makes me wonder where all the old hackers I knew vanished off to...
so, its been a few decades, but greets to-

  21. a review of various distros on Mandrakelinux 10 Now Available To All · · Score: 4, Interesting

First of all, I've used just about every distro out there, and even some you've never heard of...

Way back since the slackware days, even kernel 1.0 days and before that... Yes floppies were great.

Mandrake has had its troubles, not the least of which has been the financial stuff that it's now finally out of...

But even before Red Hat 7.0 it was a better distro. Its always had better package management.

I see people whine that Debian is better JUST because of "apt get", well guess what? Mandrake has that too! so get a clue...

and RPM? well it does that... and it does it all better. I have yet to see a better packager than URPMI... ever.

also, through all my testing over the years, I have never, EVER seen a distro support all my hardware "out of the box", I mean, it JUST WORKS. On all the wierd laptops I've owned, it installs and runs like a charm, every time, supporting all the whacky devices without me having to do a thing. ever...

wireless? yep, it was there, done and work, weird ass DSL setups, it worked. and it detected it all and set it up right, the first time... during install.

Package support? it has soo many different packages, for desktops, for servers, for whatever you want, even if you want everything. Me, of course, I experiment, so I literally install EVERYTHING, and it still works!

Today, for newbies I always point them at Mandrake, its dirt simple to install, and it gets it all correct, the first time, no weird questions, no BS, ever. it just works. period. and thats what people want.

for the hardcore people, I still recommend it, for servers, I still recommend it. always.

no matter what you are trying to do, it'll support it, no matter what your hardware, it'll work.

if it doesn't, you did something wrong. I hate people who say "Well I just installed it and it doesn't work" well guess what, it is STILL possible to do "something wrong" even then.

I watched friends do this, and they complain that whatever doesnt work afterwards, and I noticed during install they didnt select those packages... well, guess what? it wont work... duhhhh... and they even claim they selected "everything"... uh, no, I was watching bubba, you missed more than half of it. hello...

if you have a specific use, need a specific package, and specifically DONT choose it during install, of course it wont be there... jeez, get a clue...

I dont know of a better distro, I've been supporting them since way back when, and always will, I pay support, I buy extra stuff, you name it.

right now on the market there aren't many choices...

    Debian - forget it.
Fedora - this thing is a joke
SUSE - I hate Yast with a passion
slackware - they ruined it after 7.0

I've read a lot years ago that said there was some basic proof they did indeed exist or could be artificially created or something. but it's been ages since I've seen a single word on this subject.

so if tachyons are real, then they do travel faster than light. remember, there's nothing in einsteins ideas saying you CANT travel faster than light, from what I remember its just basically saying you can't accelerate to faster than light.

but if you "jump" (warp, etc) or whatever, then you kind of side-step the issue, not really breaking the physical laws. I mean all sorts of weird things happen inside black holes that violate our natural laws (hence a whole new section of physics just for black holes). like time moving backwards, etc...

but really I'd be curious if anyone had any updated info about tachyons or the like? are they debunked now or what?

  23. YAST vs urpmi on YaST to Become Open Source · · Score: 0

Well as a person who's actually used YAST (and hated it)... I found it cumbersome, awkward, non-intuitive, annoying, and never seemed to do what I wanted it to, and could never really get it to do what I needed either. in short, it never worked, the interface sucked, and well, I guess thats about that.

URPMI on the other hand is an incredible interface, easy to use, simple, straight-forward, at least as far as I've found it to be anyways.

I've actually yet to find a better package handler than URPMI. even apt-get and that stuff on debian doesnt really come close to the ease of use and simplicity of urpmi. Yes its a front-end to RPMs, so what?

This is why, IMHO, that Mandrake is the best distro out there, not only does it have the best hardware support (I've never, ever seen a distro "just work" with my notebook, everything coming up perfectly with no configuration tweaks required), and Mandrake has RPM support for those who like it, and URPMI, and even has apt-get for those who like that, in short, it has everything you could ever possibly need.

YAST? well, the day it actually works, and does something useful I'll consider it. I mean, SUSE even required user accounts be managed through YAST, what kind of nonense is that? It cant be a total front end to everything... thats... oh wait... thats webmin... oops, but at least webmin is decent...

the power of open-source is the choices, more choices means more freedom, a democratic system, truly, and the market (we the users) will decide in the end what lives and what doesn't.

my prediction is also that Xfree v4.3 will spin off (already happened) and become the new defacto standard... but thats my 2cents worth...
