    Why have internet access on your work computer at all if you can't even look at The Register, CNN.com, and other sites that could have exploits.

    I have been looking for a network file system for years. So far, I have found nothing good. I would love to have a secure network filesystem that I have control over permissions.

    IE: A web site directory where Joe, Frank, Chuck can all have read and write to all files in the directory. With NFS if Joe saves a file, Chuck can't modify it. I can do it with Samba by forcing the user and group permissions, but I don't like Samba.

    I guess really, the only way is to run a VPN and Samba, but even at that if the user has a virus on their winblows box, it could infect everything on the network file system. Even with a VPN. (It's happened before)

    Personally, I don't know how anyone is going to catch up to Apple's hardware/software solutions. Apple has both powerful systems and easy to use GUI. Not even Microsoft can compare to it, no matter how may bad photo copies of it they come out with.

    In my mind, OS X is the best system I've used. I would love to try out their Xserve one day.

    Yeah, I've changed my screening process this last time. If they send me a web site example that does not validate using W3C's validator, it goes to the bottom of the list. If they send me a MS Word document, it goes to the bottom. If they have a cover letter that does not reference the job description, bottom of the list.

    I have found exactly one applicant that meets the requirements out of 40 submissions.

    1) Has a personal web site that actually validates xHTML strict.
    2) Has example web sites that validate HTML 4.01.

    Now I'm having the applicant build a web site from our template. It's a good test that will tell me if they are competent.

    I don't think there is a problem with the workplace. I think there is a problem with the employees.

    I've been trying to hire a web master for over six months now. Every one that we get can't do basic HTML programming. We end up letting them go after two weeks because they are incompetent.

    My small business is dying because we can't find good employees to do the work.

    Sure, they're worth it, if what you want is a dual processor workstation. If that is not the case, you're paying a very large premium for a great deal of overkill.

    Let me get this correct. I'm paying more for more computer? Yeah, that sounds right to me. I guess your objective is to pay less for less computer.

    Myself, I prefer the Mac to a PC for more reasons than just the hardware. If I didn't care about all the other stuff, then a cheap PC with FreeBSD on it would be my next choice. I could run X, VIM, GCC, Firefox, and so on. But the fact is, it would still be less than what a Mac has, and therefor the reason a Mac costs more.

    This is the same thing that people have said about the Apple Cube. Yet I have upgraded the hard drive, video card, CPU (dual-1GHz), and memory. I also have a 23" monitor on it. This is on a computer that is 4 years old. I still use it as my primary system. So, I don't think that there will be no way to upgrade the iMac.

    If you want gigabit ethernet and more expandability, you should get a Power Mac G5.

    Coming from a PC user I can see how you missed the boat on this. Even the LCD screen is replaceable on a iMac. You can upgrade the CPU, hard drive, memory... http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=868 12

    MS Windows... I took one look at it and ran for my life! I knew it was trash in 1992, and it's still trash today.

    OS/2 was good, but had no software.
    Linux was good, but hard to keep running.
    Mac OS X is just perfect.

    For email, I setup a email address that only receives mail from the registrar. All other email is bounced.

    For my phone, I'm on the national do not all list. That's an $11,000 fine if someone calls me to sell me something.

    My home/business addresses are not really a problem. The only crap mail I get is from Domain Registry of America. I use junk mail to start my fires when it gets cold. The amount of junk mail I get makes it real easy to start the fire on the first try.

    I would really like to switch to IPv6, but don't I have to wait for hardware support? Can I use IPv6 on my wireless network using D-Link bridges? I run a small WISP and asked about IPv6 before. I did not get any answers on how to run it on my current configuration. I do think that it would help a lot with my routing issues.

    I think your wrong. I was bit too many times when I did a apt-get update/upgrade and everything broke. The last time it happened I switched to FreeBSD. I have never, not even once, had a problem with stability in FreeBSD. I have the most updated stable software running, and the OS is stable. I'm talking about FreeBSD 4.10, Postgres 7.4, PHP 5, ... They are all labeled as Stable. And I have not had a single crash, seg fault, or loss of data.

    FreeBSD just works as advertised, "Stable".

    With Debian, I was forced to run unstable to get the latest stable applications. PHP 4.1 is not the latest PHP. Postgres 7.1 is not the latest stable. I go to unstable to get the almost recent versions, but then things like libc would bring down the system. Too many times I would update packages and find it hosed when I finish.

    My Debian Linux system has been running for 413 days. It has 145 (low bandwidth) web sites on it. It's running on a Pentium 233MHz with 128MB ram. The only thing that is going to stop this server is massive hardware failure.

    I switched over to FreeBSD a while ago because Debian was so out of date. I fell in love with FreeBSD because it's so easy to maintain. And Ports are awesome! I can run a stable OS with the most up-to-date (stable) software. Before I had to run unstable Debian to get the latest PHP/Postgres to install, unless I compile it myself.

    Get a .22 long rifle with a good scope. Load it with CB's (very light .22 loads, like a BB gun, but just a bit better). Sleep on your roof and wait for the crook to come. When they pry your door open, shoot their knees. With the long barrel on the rifle, the shot is almost silent. Like a BB gun. As long as you shoot once, they won't know where it came from. They will go away without taking anything....limping.

    Then the next day when your neighbor comes out limping you will know who's been steeling from you.

    OR

    You can go the sissy route and setup motion capture video and alarm systems.

    In my company this is how the HR work:

    1 Post ads.
    2 Hire best person from ads.
    3 Employee lied about abilities.
    4 Employee stops working.
    5 Fire Employee.
    6 goto 1

    In five years my company has only found one employee worth keeping. The rest just work for a week or two, then we have to beg them to do anything. Eventually we fire them and look for more. The problem with this is that we are so busy we can't keep up.

    It's too hard to find good employee's. And it's very hard having to pay $500+ each time we advertise for help.

    Try finding a webmaster that actually knows what standards compliant HTML looks like. We've been looking for over six months to fill that position.
