Yes, I actually enjoy new words, as well as bending and abusing old words. I think it adds some flavor to the language as well as allowing for some specific conotations not covered with the standard usage.

So when I see a repeated mistake that bugs me, I try to point out the mistake. Its probably a lost cause, but tilting at windmills can be a decent pass time

I feel the same way about people talking about real words and actual meanings.

By the way "affective" is a word, but I don't think that its the word that you meant. Try "effective" next time.

Yes, you are correct, that is what I meant. However there was obviously no ambiguity about what I meant so affective was (a)effective in that case. :)

  7. Re:There's no such word as "virii" on On The Costs of Full Security Disclosure · · Score: 1

No such word. Those word always make me shudder. There is obviously such a word because you used it several times. Maybe you can say it is a new word, not a commonly accepted word, but it is still a word. Virii is also an affective word. You see the purpose of words is to communicate an idea. You obviously knew that the word virii was used as the plural for virus because you mentioned it in your dumb poem.

Another point is all words are made up, words have no inate meaning, the meaning of a word is only gained through context and usage. Since we have an evolving and unrestricted language where there is no central authority passing out stamps of approval to new words (like the French do), words only become appropriate through usage.

So as a rule of thumb any group of sounds used to try to convey a meaning is a word. It is an effective word if it conveyed the intended meaning. It is only not a 'real' word if you have only imagined it and never used it to try to convey a thought.

Rarely is anything about the mind proven, just speculated and corelated. If all it takes to play chess is a good memory, then why has it take so long for computers to compete with grand masters level chess players. Computers have superior memory to people. It is becuase computers lack abstraction and reasoning skills, two basic component in what you call imagination.

Too bad I can't get to the article to see how they are defining random. I have studied random numbers quite a bit, and have worked on the assumption that any thing that can be calculated is not truely random. So under that definition no, it isn't random, and neither are any of the random number generator algorithms.

The comon test for randomness is the chi squared test which actually tests for dispersion of numbers. That is are number occuring in 'equal' frequencies in an order that isn't too similar to the order in other sections of the sample. Failing the chi squared tests shows you aren't 'Pseudo Random' passing it only proves your numbers are dispersed not random
