I've done this for years. I also use a separate email address for the domain registrar so I know when someone is referencing it.

Yes, I'm a "bad person" and violating all sorts of policies, but the policies are flawed. Requiring people to have accurate information should have also includes a requirement for registrars to hide this information from the public for free. Until that change is made, I'm going to continue to violate these terms of agreement. It's like having to pay extra to have an unlisted number--I could an idiot and pay the phone company or could simply get the account in a different name.

The funny thing is, it's not like I do anything criminal or "subversive" with my domain--in fact it's a tourism site that has won awards--but I've actually been telephoned by spammers who scraped the info from the registrar and I see no reason to continue to be a target of opportunity.

There is ZERO reason why a Prof should have the expectation that they can be Paid to work for a school and on that school's money/time work and produce a book in which the Prof can sell for self gain.

That seems logical initially, but you've failed to take into account that being a professor is not a 9-5 job. When you're a professor it's impossible to get away from the job: thinking about the next publication, new ideas for research, ways to solve problems for committees, how to deal with a troublesome student, how to improve a lecture, etc. The life of the mind doesn't stop when one walks away from a desk or a lab.

But seriously, it's entertainment, and, compared to a lot of other things one could be doing (going to the movies, fly fishing, buying new hardcover books, restoring classic cars, etc.) it's relatively inexpensive. Yeah, sure, the cost adds up, but it does on everything. How much have you spent on rent, mortgage interest, food, shoes, or transportation? You want dumb? Consider how much people spend on cars between the device itself, maintenance, fuel, and insurance versus what percentage of their time they actually spend in it.

I know other tools do similar things, often for less money, but I'm lucky enough to have some disposable income and I'd rather spend a few extra bucks for a pleasant experience.

However, despite all that, I type 55-60 words per minute so it's not worth it to me to retrain myself. In addition, since my hands are never trapped in the home position and take turns visiting alternate sides of the keyboard, I can type all day long without ever getting RSI symptoms.
