Personally, I like this idea. I think that bringing back both the droids would be the smart thing to do since the "Star Wars" saga is supposed to be from the droids' point of view anyway. Not having HK-47 and T3-M4 would be dumb.

I administrate both Windows and Linux servers and was interested to see this report. However, reading into the article a bit more makes me question the validity of their assessment.

The Yankee Group states that Windows 2003 Server led Red Hat Enterprise Linux with nearly 20% more annual up time.

I had to do a double take when I saw that. 20% more!? Assume for a moment that you have two servers, one running Windows Server 2003 and one running Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4. Assume that your Windows box ran non-stop, without rebooting (which means you probably are not loading any Microsoft security updates) for 365 days. For your Linux box to have 20% more downtime it'd have to only be up for 292 days. If that is the case, your machine is no longer a server and is nothing more than a space heater.

Microsoft wants to push their service. Fine. But let me choose other places to search as well. Include Google, Yahoo, IMDB, Amazon, eBay, Encarta, and whatever other MS searches they want to push, but include options that are easy to select. The benefit of the Firefox search bar is that by default it lets you search the Internet or go shopping or look up something at Answers.com. Multiple sources are good for you.

I work at an ISP doing Tech Support.

On a daily basis, I get calls from users of Norton Internet Security or McAfee Security Center (or whaever "I don't know, whatever came with my computer") who, for some reason, can't get Internet Explorer/Outlook Express to work. They don't know what a firewall *is* let alone how to configure it.

If I suggest they turn of that firewall and try it, everything is suddenly happy again.

Many of them don't understand. "It worked fine yesterday/last week/last year and I haven't changed anything..."

I specifically despise the Norton firewall as it seems to be the most popular problem causer.

I am glad that Microsoft isn't turning this feature on by default because many clueless lusers will accidentally block the programs that they're trying to use and then not understand why it doesn't work anymore.

Frequently these users try to blame us at the ISP, not realizing that it's their own fault. Firewalls are my most frequent frustration, and I'm glad this one will behave the way it will.

  16. 4 Rules on Top 10 System Administrator Truths · · Score: 5, Interesting

In my Tech Support experience, I have found only three basic rules.

Rule number 1. People are stupid. This one is true of all people. Tech support, highways, shopping, whatever. This rule has been extended to cover just about any stupid thing that anyone does.
    "Why did that guy just..."
    "Rule number 1."

"Did she think she could get away with that?"
    "Rule number 1."

    Rule number 2. People lie.
Me: "Has the computer been restarted since the problem started?"
    Them: "Yes..."
Me: "OK. Let's try restarting the computer now and see what happens."
Them: "What do you mean by restart?"

And when you add 1 and 2 together, you get 3. Sometimes, people are so stupid, they don't know that they're lying. You know these people. They're the ones who have "Windows 2000 XP" or "2000 ME." They're the people for whom "Nothing happens when I try to check my email. Nothing! Just this error message..." Not realizing that the error message is *exactly* what I was looking for. An error message is *not* nothing. Grr.

There is a fourth rule that also shows up from time to time:
Rule number 4. No good deed goes unpunished.
