  1. Re:Track cues on Clear Channel Buys Patent For Instant Live CDs · · Score: 1

    Well, just for argument's sake:
What about adding "please turn the tape over to hear the rest of the message" cues while producing the tape? I was helping with this back in the '70's and that was one of the things we did.

From the patent: "It accesses and parses the primary event file into one or more digital track files that can be recorded onto a recording media."

So the patent doesn't require that multiple tracks be produced.

About the only thing that looks original about this patent is the word "digital". Take out that word and this stuff has been done for decades.

If you beat someone up and it can be shown that you were probably thinking something like "f-ing $BigotryRelatedEpithet", you'll get a harsher sentence than you would otherwise.

Intent does (and probably should) play a lot into most justice systems. Otherwise accidentally running over a pedestrian would put you in the same jail cell as the guy who deliberately used his car as a weapon.

I'd suggest one or two more simple rules:

I'd modify rule 2 to count punctuation characters as well. This is similar to rule 7, but much more basic.

I'd also look for multiple one or two letter words occuring consecutively. This automatically catches stuff like "X a n a x"

But here are the subject lines of some of the stuff that reached my inbox in the last 12 hours:
    "A better economy for all"
    "mock disco rhenium"
    "be the king"
    "ebay earns you fortunes"

I'm not sure that your filter would have caught any of those unless it disects the body of the message as well as the subject line.

You fail to appreciate the elegance with which tax laws are enforced:

Remember that, at the Federal level, the ability to tax income is part of the Constitution. Same for probably all states.

The fact that it's part of the Constitution gives it equal status with your right against self incrimination.

The fact that it was added to the Constitution (16th ammendment) after your right against self incrimination (5th ammendment) means that the tax law trumps your rights. Tax court is the only court in which you are considered guilty unless you can prove your innocence.

By not signing your return, you have effectively refused to file a tax return. Your return isn't considered filed unless signed. That's the only law you've broken, but it's enough.

No, it's the management that deserves to be laid off. Eisner has systematically whored the company's image in order to generate income in the short term, with complete disregard to their image in the long term.

This was the central point of Roy Disney's resignation letter, in which he called for Eisner's resignation.

It is management's decision to water down the films so that the characters work well as Happy Meal toys, or sell as plush.
