  1. How about picking the types of content to crawl? on Building a Bigger Search Engine · · Score: 1

I saw another poster say you can stop the GRUB client from crawling porn, but what if you could pick the types of content you wanted to crawl for?

Let's say for example I use search engines but find them lacking or would like better results for the types of content I SEARCH FOR???

So one solution would just be to pick the types of content manually, or select keywords, etc, manually....
Another option might be to sniff my use of Google.com or Altavista.com (is that still up? ;) and then help the Engines refine the content in its indexes according to what I ACTUALLY SEARCHED FOR???

Since there is not any monetary incentive to run the client, and you won't find any Aliens (but maybe some freaks ;), give the user (client) the ability to improve results for things that matter to them....

However, I don't think very much high-end telco/ISP equipment was really designed to duplicate packets to someone other than the intended recipient

I'm not much of a network guy, but in cisco lingo it is called "port span" which will echo the packet set to or from a port TO ANOTHER PORT. Just hook up a sniffer to the "spanned" port and you can listen to all the packets.

ISPs do this for their _secret_ monitoring / gov't-email-spying stuff. ISPs do it to find why they are having a network problem by monitoring the packets on a switched network without putting a hub in the middle.

If you do the span thing on a switch port that has a router on the other end you can see all packets leaving/entering the router.

Granted this captures a LOT of traffic, but if the monitoring box just drops stuff it doesnt want, the load is lighter (filters).

I agree using a publically accessible wireless net is cool and all, but I also think their admins should either 1)lock it down 2) not use them in the first place b/c securing a wireless lan is either 100% impossible or nearly so.

If you are a corp with Wireless then my suggestions would be to reconsider using it, b/c of freeloaders adn security. Then if you must use it, consider making the IPs it hands out public IPs only. THen use a firewall so those IPs can only access a PPTP or tunneling server that gets the users on to the "private" or 10.dot networks. Have those users use the pptp connection as their default gateway and disallow getting from the regular IP to another IP but the PPTP server. THis way it is open for all, but useless unless you tunnel in to the real (private and controlled) network...

On the other hand, we all know war-driving kiddies are terrorists, and because they are stealing bandwidth, and SPAMMERs are not, because they steal TIME and Bandwidth.... If only that spam dude from yesterday could be found to have setup a wireless network at his home (and office) we the people could use this to get him locked up!!! (just kidding, his mail would pile up and cause a public eyesoar, and we'd have to lock him up again...)

And all that is not to mention how this assumes that access to the internet is by itself a problem. If that is the case then we are fucked as a country, because of how people don't patch their systems, and company sell insecure software which is what is the real cause if y0u ask me.

I work for an Internet company. I _never_ link myself to that company. I'm sure many others could say the same.

The main reasons for me: Job secruity and a Professional projection of myself and my company.

When I get home, I drink beer, sniff glue, etc. If I were to post to the boards I would probably offer some good help. Then the beer starts to kick in (and the glue, oh boy!) I bet my own level of control and professionalism would begin to disappear. (and if I were in my physical work building they would know)

How many times have you seen post where some "tech guy" or such says, well you know what?: Customers are Idiots, Aholes, etc? I have seen this. How many times have you gone to work the next day and said to yourself, 'shit I really should not have sent that email last night...' because you were half in the bag when you sent it.

It reminds me of the guy who posted on the Ciruit City thing, saying "we don't need customer's like that" (the ones who return a lot of goods). While he may have posted a fact about the company he still sounded like a jerk b/c the companies public position probably is that "the customer is always right". Now the real position is out in the open, for good or bad.

Companies want to present themselves in a professional way. People acting as rogue representative of a company after hours is a bad thing.

But don't get me totally wrong, it took me a while to get to this point (beer, glue, etc) and if I go out for a beer I wear work logos and all (shirts, hats, etc).

If you have so much energy to devote to helping others do it at work. Teach the other techs a thing or two, improve the 'system' don't operate out side of it.

All that being said, if you still want to help out on your own time, don't claim to be an employee of 'the company' and don't reveal the 'secrets' when you do so.
