And don't even get me stated in the huge difference in vacation time (2 weeks in the USA, 1 month in Spain). Nor the food quality ("quality food in the US" is an oxymoron.)
The "benefits" that I get are some of the best around here, or so I've been told. But they are a P.O.S., comparing to what I was getting in Spain.
If I had been out of work in Spain, I would have had some kind of money from the unemployment insurance. In the US, when you are out of work, that's your problem.
And, if you dig in the cost of Healthcare around the world, you'll discover:
- The cost for Healthcare in the US is more expensive than in Europe. But it's not better.
- Less people gets healthcare coverage in the US than in Europe. Where's democaracy?
- In the US, people expends more % of their paychecks in Healthcare than in Europe.
- With insurance and all the stuff, visit the E.R. and end paying at least $300. Again, this is with insurance. No cost of E.R. visits in Spain.
See? There's something wrong. I'm so ready to go back!
I agree that US Diesel fuel is very dirty, by European standards.
I live in the US. I own a VW Jeta TDi 2002. I love it. I get +46mpg in the freeway, with high A/C (I live in the hot south) *and* doing +80 most of the time.
One night, I did quite a long trip, at 85/95 mph. The mileage was still great, ~45mpg (with low A/C).
If I'd drive it around 65mph, I'm pretty sure I will be getting the theoretical 49mpg. And the Jetta StationWagon gets 50mpg.
I can't wait for biodiesel and cleaner US Diesel fuel.
I would agree with you... if you were talking about SuSE.
RedHat configuration does not work this way. On RedHat, you edit config files with $EDITOR (or poking the hard disk with a needle if you wish), re-start the daemon (or service or...) and you are done.
It seems that you have never tried to configure RedHat this way, and you are talking about something that you don't know at all. Maybe you are repeating what other uninformed people said.
I'm no Redneck a well. And I'm a serious geek. And I shop at Wal-Mart every once and then. So what?
The thing is, I was seriously thinking on getting an OS-less computer to install Mandrake on it. My current Linux box (my only box) is showing it's age on heavy usage, say, compiling libs while using KDE and running Galeon with heavy Java usage.
Now Wal-Mart is selling, on-line, affordable PCs with Mandrake already installed.
Mmmm, what was my checking account balance again?
I will wait for a review or too before buying, though.
NC / Triangle Park area just plainly sucks for IT-job searching.
I know around 10[*] excellent (good work ethos, years of experience and well-rounded human beings) developers/sysadmins that have been out of a job for more than 6 months now. Some have family.
And, with family (yes, some geeks do have family), aside from moving expenses, it is a Royal PITA to move to another state (school, housing, work for your partner).
[*] the ones that *still* live in NC... or could afford to move somewhere else.
Actualy, Spanish-speaking countries (and maybe others as well) have a non-English way of getting their names:
Some rules:
1.- You only need one "First name". The concept of "Middlename" sounds very ackward.
2.- You can have added to your "First Name" as many "subsequent first names" as you want, Like, for example "Jesus Miguel Alonso Alejandro". This person would be called "Jesus", qnd the other names are just there because they were dear to Jesus parents (being the names of beloved family members and things like that)
3.- "Last Name" or "Family Name" is composed of two (2) "family names": the Father's family name and the Mother's family name.
So, the Congressman's Father's family is "Villanueva" family. The Congressman's Mother's family is "Nuñez". His Father, of course, would be "Villanueva Someothername". His Mother's would be "Nuñez Someothername".
So, all of you that are saying "Mr, Nuñez" are "wrong".
Just do a s/Nuñez/Villanmueva (replace Nuñez with Villanueva) and be properly merry.
And, belive it or not, it run smoothly. I upgraded it from 16 to 32 and then to 40MB. The last upgrade was because I was using MS-Word to do long papers, so I needed the extra RAM.
Now some cousin of mine is using it as a college box. With Win98Lite + Office95 (IIRC).
Heck, I had been running Win95-original on a 486/DX4-100 with 20MB of RAM !
It was a little slow, bot nonetheless, completely usable. Although Slackware with no X was really fast there:)
It is a program that erradicates IExplorer from Windows. Windows is completely usable. You have to get another web browser (Netscape, Mozilla...) and a file amnager (the old on from Win95... or use Midnight Commander ontop a Cygwin bash shell).
I used back then, to get a P1666 no-mmx with 32MB of RAM to run Windows 98. Before Win98Lite, it was slow as.... as WinXP. After using Win98Lite, it was usable again, moderately fast... a cool college machine. Until SuSE 5.3 got its way into it, of course *grin*
Maybe then you should go to http://www.cat-linux.com and join the mailing list. They are probably looking for voluntiers to translate or help with Linux.
Peruvian Congressman Villanueva has proposed this law (in Spanish. Use the Fish) that will change the way Peru buys its software. The origin of the Law and it's "travel" within the Peruvian Congress is in this timetable
Congressman Villanueva's Law will ask for any software to be bought by the Government of Peru to provide data in open formats. It will also ask for the source code and the hability to modify the code, to adapt it to the necessities of the Peruvian Republic.
The idea behind this is (liberal translation from Spanish):
"We, the Governemnt, cannot allow any company -foreing or domestic- to ship software that can hide spyware. We, the Government, cannot allow a private company to own the data that belongs to the People of Peru. We, the Government, have special needs and obligations: provide the best 'bung for the buck', allow any Peruvian to audit the source code of our applications to make sure there's nothing hidden that endangers Peru, and to make sure that the data is available even if we change the software supplier. Any software that do not abides by this law will not be used by any Peruvian Government agency".
Also, check what Microsoft Peru had to say about it. And what Congressman Villanueva answered to them.
Last Friday night (Apr, 5, ~ 22:45 Eastern) I saw a light in the sky, probably a meteor of some kind. It traveled South to North and it was visible (at least I saw it) for 4 seconds. Its light changed from red to green. This was in Central North Carolina.
Did anyone else see it? I doubt it was the Satellite from this/. story. Coordenates do not match.
I am pretty interested to know if this was just a piece of rock, a satellite or a party at ISS.
In fact, the Soviet troops were welcomed by the (then) pro-comunist government that ejected the King and the former Government. This means nothing.
Yes, they were a puppet government payed by Moscow's Politburo. But.. what about the current Government? I think it has been payed and put in power by the Western Powers... mmm...
Anyway, I think that, even though the current government is a puppet government, they are far better for Afghanistan peace, stability and well-being than the Soviet one. (We manufacture better puppets?)
And, yes, we do not intend to stay there. We already have naval bases in the Hindi Ocean. (This was the reason behind the Soviet's push to the south)
Use ARK (ark) also know as "Archiver". It is a basic WinZip clone for Linux (not really, but, well, you get the idea. Nice GUI application that just works as expected.
And make sure that you convince them to buy one box from Mandrake!
Same case here.

Check out the VW Lupo TDi .
The mileage is "3 Litern auf 100 km", and this translates to, roughly, +78mpg.
Remember:
1US Galon = 3.789 L
1 mile = 1.609 Km
And you can buy it today... if you live in Europe.
I agree that US Diesel fuel is very dirty, by European standards.

I betcha TheLoneCabagge is part of LinuxGrrrrls
It's your, and not you're. Learn that they're different.
your - belonging to you
you're - you are. (just as in learn that they're different)

Now, with a little help from our friends at Microsoft, 802.11b will be trully insecure.
Can we see as an attempt from Microsoft to "open" their products?
If they don't do OpenSource, will Microsoft achieve "Openness" through MS-Really Insecure Wireless?
I would agree with you... if you were talking about SuSE.

You are not trolling. You are saying the truth.
Hopefully some meta-moderators will see that.
I've been moded down before. Some people just don't get it.
Anyway, you are right. OpenBSD is great and very secure for firewalls, for example.
Can you please post the URLs?
Thank you in advance.

Any state with job openings, BTW?
Probably, your best choice would be Mandrake Linux 8.2. It is now available boxed (with helpful manuals). Check http://www.mandrake-linux.com/en/
It comes with graphical configuration tools, "windows-like".
OF course, you can do everything from the command line. But for begginers (or when you are in a hurry), the GUI tools are great.
Hrm. Since Nunez mentions ...
Actualy, it is "Mr. Villanueva" instead of "Mr. Nunez".
Hes is not anglophone, nor his family or culture are anglophone. So, please, use the proper way of addressing Mr. Villanueva.
Thank you.

Yes, a typo. It was a P166.

More information can be found here
Then, maybe you can help the translators, submiting "patches" to the documentation.
Your help will be probably welcome (and badly needed.)
Contact LuCAS here: http://lucas.hispalinux.esfor more information

What a shame!
I browsed through the Microsoft Word document and it says in two places "the operating system cannot belong to the OpenSource type ".
Even, though, IMHO Linux could really do the job (support for Webspher, RISC architecture, JFS, 5 aprtitions, big amount of RAM...).
Crazy!
Also, wasn't there an initiative in Italy to try to move away from Microsoft products? I remember reading something about it.

Hi,
/. story. Coordenates do not match.
Last Friday night (Apr, 5, ~ 22:45 Eastern) I saw a light in the sky, probably a meteor of some kind. It traveled South to North and it was visible (at least I saw it) for 4 seconds. Its light changed from red to green. This was in Central North Carolina.

I am pretty interested to know if this was just a piece of rock, a satellite or a party at ISS.
Actualy, is all about the OS being pre-installed.
Take a look at this article:
Linux for Mom and Dad
This article "kills" a myth: only geeks can use Linux.
When reality says: only an expert can install and configure Linux or Windows so anyone can use it
This is why Microsoft is so against Linux being pre-loaded on computers, as seen recently.
In fact, the Soviet troops were welcomed by the (then) pro-comunist government that ejected the King and the former Government. This means nothing.
Yes, they were a puppet government payed by Moscow's Politburo. But.. what about the current Government? I think it has been payed and put in power by the Western Powers... mmm...

And make sure that you convince them to buy one box from Mandrake!
I pre-ordered Mandrake 8.2 PowerPack, with manuals this last Sunday.
I just can't wait!
Those are my (more than) 2 cents (to help Mandrake)
