There's humor to be found in everything, and some of these witticisms have been derned witty. If occasionally tasteless. Wait, wait. There are gaping chasms of difference between name calling and "disrespect for the underlying humanity of others". That's a slippery goddamn slope you're on there.

While I admit that I am engaging in a lively bit of pedantry, it seems you have failed to understand my point. Your "respect all" PC attitude fails one simple test, the empirical one. I need not respect that which I KNOW to be wrong. Empiricism is NOT knowing like being a 'man of faith' is knowing that you walk in the light of some God. The empirical man sleeps well at night knowing full well his place in this universe. Should that place later be several microns to the left, he notes this and adjusts his world view.

So, do tell, to what ends does the Empirical Man need to tolerate the ignorance in others? Other than to assuage your whiny PC guilt.

Not even. The only legitimate question he asked was "Why the softball questions?". Anyone who watches the show KNOWS that NO guest, no matter their orientation, is going to get mostly softball questions.

Jon was dead-on-right questioning WHY that dork was trying to compare Daily Show to a legitimate news channel's programming.

Jon's attitude at the end of the interview was really just shock. He, like many people, realize that there's NO ARGUING with pedantic rhetoric dicks in bowties. It's like trying to argue there is no God with a person of faith. In fact, it's just like that. How can you even put Shrek in the same category as Toy Story? Because of the graphics? PLEASE, people. Toy Story and The Incredibles are amazing movies because they're good stories told well because BRAIN came before cheap pop-culture references and lame, embarassingly lame visual gags.

I've always maintained that Shrek doesn't even rate as a fine example of what animation is capable of, when 99% of the gags won't make sense to anyone in 5 years time.

It's alittle something called 'wit'. The wit in that movie is in every scene, every idea, every reference, almost every line. No joke was easy, they were earned. Compare that to the Shrek movies: crappy, unfunny pop-culture references, lame visual gags, bathroom humor.

The incredibles was touching, often hilarious, ALWAYS mindblowing. Also, I'd hardly call him easily amused... obviously HE was watching the movie with his brain turned on, as evidenced by the many things made-fans walked away appreciating.

You won't find these all in 99% of anime, and not all in the same movie at once.

"Boring" and "Not enough likeable characters" is a decent distillation of a common criticism. Many people need their stories to have entertainment value... not just pretty pictures. I havn't seen it, but I have been bored to fucking tears by plenty of anime before. Anime mistakes slow panning shots of scenery, and lengthy close ups of twitchy tear-filled eyes as effective characterization. Non-sequitor quotes from modern philsophers as good dialog. These conventions rarely ever work, and they rely on the viewer too much to fill in the gaps. This isn't a problem for otakus hyped up on pixi sticks and coke. It is a problem for people who go into a movie with their brain fully engaged, looking for mental stimulation.

Anime needs more heros. Not the muscle-bulging kind, but the kind that can write some fucking good stories for once.

  18. Re:how's it ? on Ghost In The Shell 2: Innocence in Theaters · · Score: 0, Flamebait

Jesus. This sounds like every other crap anime out there. For some bloody reason Japanese animators think that throwing non-sequitor quotes from literary sources, or original nonsensical quotes makes for more intelligent dialogue. Typical example:

Female warrior contemplates the existential meaning of life. Her voice over blathers something about "life is ephemeral and I need to be like a cherryblossom!" while the screen pans across well-drawn scenery.

Laine, as cool as the art and some story elements are is another example of good art made cheese because of the storyteller's inability to articulate. I've really become disappointed in anime in general. There's too few good story-tellers out there.

Yeah, that's called 'being a moderate'. How many politicians can effectively navigate the waters of public opinion to create a single, solid voting record for their constituency? Is it POSSIBLE that his constituency has complicated views on a variety of issues? Does he HAVE to 'stay the [party platform] course'?
