I hate this argument. We will ALWAYS need more CPU power. AI, physics engine capabilities (More objects), view distances, weather effects, etc, etc. They ALL take CPU power. If anything we constantly need more CPU power to make our games more fun.
Changing the price of a music from $CD_PRICE to $DOWNLOAD_YAHOO_PRICE simply means that someone making files available, would be liable for $DOWNLOAD_YAHOO_PRICE now. In other words, $num_of_users_downloading * $DOWNLOAD_YAHOO_PRICE.
Sure, but the formulas are skewed. Here's the original:
I don't even know how you got moded insightful. A knife? A freakin' knife?
If we were to arm our military like they do in star wars, we'd be giving every soldier their normal equipment plus a crossbow, a pack of bolts, a knife, AND a sword. And then telling them to close in as quick as possible and engage in hand to hand combat.:P
I think *that* is what the OP was trying to say. Its kind of rediculous to think anyone at all would ever try to engage anyone else in melee weapon combat as a battle tactic. Its no wonder the jedi died off.:P
I'm pretty sure that no HTTP proxy service would be terribly thrilled should you start hammering their connection with your warez'd bittorrent transfers.
Not to mention you don't know if they are logging who uses their proxy servers. It wouldn't be hard to track + log connections. And, should they get a subpeona, they WILL relinquish that information.
This is how we did it when I was in high school (93-96ish). We had two labs. The main computer lab containing 40-60 computers, and a 'math/science' lab containing approximately 20 or so machines.
There were no other computers at all in any of the classrooms. And it worked amazingly well, too. When a class needed a lab, they just reserved it and everything was ready. No games, chat, etc. Just the software needed to do the schoolwork at hand.
But of course you can't find someone willing to pay. The GPL permits you to sell software, but it also permits any of your customers to undercut you by selling it for a lower price or just giving it away. So if you write some GPLed software, you can probably sell it once. If someone else wrote it, you probably can't sell it at all.
I think that's the main reason some of us aren't enamoured with the GPL license. I don't mind having to redistribute code to the people I distributed binaries to. But it is unfair to not allow me to restrict them (The people I gave binaries/source to) from redistributing my software I wrote for free, thus destroying any profit I might be able to make on the selling of the software itself.
Of course, I'm "free" to sell services, however.. What if its something that doesn't require ongoing maintainence, like say an really awesome irc or ftp client? I'm pretty screwed then.
Kinda like saying "You know those semi trucks? Why the hell do they have 18 gears?! You DO realize that that is why the consumer will never want to drive one, right? I mean, who can operate a triple shifter system?!"
Windows is where it is because it works well for the desktop. UNIX is where it is because its an incredibly stable, reliable server. The only people who use windows for their servers are Microsoft, or Windows-users-turned-admin.
That said, I agree. Everyone should in the unix-like crowd need to stop bickering, and set down some standardized interfaces/options/etc. It really really sucks to move from GNU to BSD tools or vice versa because NOTHING IS THE SAME. Its all totally different arguments/options/output.
After all that, I still don't see why it shouldn't be part of FreeBSD. It wouldn't be hard to make an additional menu item, which could be the default one that says 'Pretty, Shiny GUI Install'.
One thing I LOVE about the BSD's is their ability to WORK TOGETHER instead of fragmenting like so many clusterbombs because one person doing one script happens to disagree with one other person.
We don't need PC-BSD. What we need is for them to get their stuff together, and work with Free/Net/Open/Dragonfly BSD. C'mon people, do you WANT the BSD's to be like linux distros? No? Then time to compromise.:)
They usually run at say 800x600x16, with no aa or af, no dynamic shadows/lighting, or super ultra high res models. The AI distance might be set pretty close, and it might disable whole functions to make it faster.
Just look at any modern (within 2-3 years) game's settings layout, and you'll see what I mean. Most of the time they auto-detect what you have and pre-select what things to turn on/off so you'll enjoy the game at hopefully >10 fps.
Your argument is a valid one, both have their places. I do both console gaming, owning all the current gen consoles as well as pc gaming. They both have their advantages.
Actually, you would need a few more to compensate for various fertility levels. 12 might do. Then each woman would give birth, and have 3 months to 'regenerate' and get fertile again. Might want to have 13-14 just for extra redundancy:)
I don't think its truely a case of elitism. The real problem is that IT is there to maintain the machines. Who do you usually blame when your shit isn't working? Oh, that's right. The IT department.
So, what's going to happen when Mr. Tweaky gets ahold of VB LatestVersion and manages to completely bork thier machine? I doubt NOT call IT and demand it be fixed immediately...
If people want to use those tools, I don't see why an organization can't train their employees on the proper use and maintainance of their machines and associated programs (ie, VB). Otherwise, lets NOT let users (In a corporate setting) potentially cause problems by letting them do whatever they want.
You've got it backwards. What he's saying is that since he owns the box, and the contents of the box. And you have no right to put padlocks on his box to secure his contents in an effort to charge him anything (effort, money, etc) to gain access to his stuff.
He's saying its all already his. Except for the padlock, which he would like either gone or freely openable by him.
He's not working on a clone of the unix os. He's working on a kernel that in all actuality is nothing at all like unix. The gnu tools that people use with it make it feel like its kinda sorta unix-ish though. Sorta.:)
Part of the problem with the US is we seem to just care too much. Really, no matter what we do, we're evil.
In Haiti, you know why we went there? Mostly because we were asked to. Somolia? You think anyone WANTED to go there? How about Bosnia? Korea? Vietnam? Panama? The gulf war? (The 90-91 war)
Look, most Americans DO NOT want to send our soldiers out to die for some backwards third world country that's just going to crap on us afterwards, OK?
Problem is, if we don't go, we're bastards for being rich and powerful and not doing anything to help the little guy.
If we do go? Then we're bullies, and need to learn to stay out of other people's affairs.
We are for the most part just trying to help. Yes, it positively affects us, but its also trying positively affect the world by giving a semblance of stability.
You really need to learn some world history. Things are NOT as black and white as you think. I'm not saying the US hasn't made mistakes, but its far from malicious in its intents.
Although Memtest86+ is great, I actually prefer Memtest8086++++.
Its way more updated than any of the previous Memtest suites, including Memtest8088++, and Memtest86+++. It even supports MIPS, Ultra-SPARCs and even the POWER branch.
It also supports up to 1TB of contiguous memory with additional options for interrupt breaking, memory controller programming and even playing MP3's and nethack/angband while you wait (customizable with your fav versions, of course!).
I don't have the url handy, but man. Just search google for ultra uber memtest8086++++, should be one of the first hits.
I can very easily find better quality parts for the same price or even cheaper than the mass-produced, lowest-possible-price pieces of tapeworm infested animal excrement parts that wholely make up the boxes you can buy from taiwan.
Also, considering that any geek worth thier salt can throw any machine of any moderate complexity together and working perfectly (minus os install and possible driver hunting/install) in roughly 60 minutes or less, why would you pay the same amount for crappy parts and even crappier 'support'?
Not to mention most banks also have clauses saying that if you don't check on your account within x amount of months, they can close it out. So you'd have to keep warping ahead in time in x-1 month intervals or so to keep the account open.
I hate this argument. We will ALWAYS need more CPU power. AI, physics engine capabilities (More objects), view distances, weather effects, etc, etc. They ALL take CPU power. If anything we constantly need more CPU power to make our games more fun.
NO TO STAGNATION! YES TO MORE SHINY BITS!
Sure, but the formulas are skewed. Here's the original:
($CD_PRICE * $NUM_ALBUMNS) * $DOWNLOADERS = $MONEY
( $15 * 20 ) * 10 = $3000
vs
$YAHOO_PRICE * $DOWNLOADERS = $MONEY
$5 * 10 = $50
huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuge difference, no?
I think THAT is what he's trying to get at. They're not losing $3k, they're now losing $50.
I see your NES, SNES, Nintendo64, Playstation, Genesis, Saturn, and Dreamcast and raise it by one PS2 and Xbox
Its not a troll, it really was one of the worst. Games. Ever.
:)
I'm trying to think right now of any game remotely worse than this one... Thinking.. Hmm... Nope, none.
Even pong had more going for it.
I don't even know how you got moded insightful. A knife? A freakin' knife?
:P

You DO read
Dying? What do you mean dying? As far as I could tell, it was more or less dead, rotten away, and partially fossilized. At least in the mainstream.
It really is a shame, though.
I'm pretty sure that no HTTP proxy service would be terribly thrilled should you start hammering their connection with your warez'd bittorrent transfers.

In other news, Windows is found to heavily favor MS executables as opposed to others.
Time to turn off the sigs, dude. You didn't get enough of the free sigs already?
And, who cares about their sig? Its some dumbass half-whit line they probably yanked from some hilariously funny webpage. Just let it go.
I'll bite. For the most part, its how its done.
There's a bunch of normalized baseline settings.
They usually run at say 800x600x16, with no aa or af, no dynamic shadows/lighting, or super ultra high res models. The AI distance might be set pretty close, and it might disable whole functions to make it faster.
