Yeah. I had an old 486 a couple of years ago and the fan died, power supply fried (the board went from yellow to black) and the computer was useless even with a new PS... so, although it didn't burn the house down, if there had been a bit more dust in there and the computer had been near anything flammable it could have been bad.

Well, I just saw an old apple magazine in my basement while I was looking for something and it had the primary article "8 bits is plenty". Anyway, I would have to say that 2 Ghz is fast now, and for a regular person using email and typing up simple documents a 386 would suffice (if not for their need to have a recent copy of ms windows) but for gaming, science, big servers, and many other applications, the more processing power the better. Although I agree that a 5% performance boost isn't really significant, maybe as this stuff evolves we'll be able to see much more than 5%, to a point where lots of geeks would think it essential to have a good water (or other liquid) cooling system.

I disagree about how wise you think Yoda is. Consider the scene at the end "victory you say? ..." I think it is more about arrogance than wisdom. I suppose they are to a degree mutually exclusive, but I guess the Jedi simply have not had to deal with such a problem in a long time. (How long was it? 1000 generations or something) They've put themselves on quite the pedestal so they don't think that a Sith lord could possibly slip by them when in fact he did... They've forgotten (to a degree) the ways of the sith and how powerful they really are. Also, I think they respect Yoda for his wisdom in that he is very wise in matters that would effect the affairs of the jedi up to episode 1, and not so much with this new threat. Even with this new threat however Yoda seems to know more about it than the others... (again look at the victory comment) Come to think of it, it seems like a dark side ability is to be able to cloud the vision of even other jedi (light or dark). Evidence for this is the obvious stuff from episodes 1 and 2, but also in ROTJ, in which Vader feels the presence of luke when Sidious does not, and near the end when Sidious doesn't notice Vader is about to pick him up and throw him to his death. All this being said I don't disagree that they also respect him for his mastery of the sabre. I think it's a combination of the two however...

I don't think anyone is denying we know next to nothing about human intelligence. Also, your analogy of humans to computers and runners to locomotives is misleading at best. Propulsion systems (commonly used ones today at least) are far simpler to understand than computational systems. (maybe that's saying something about intelligence right there) There's also the question of whether or not the brain is a quantum computer (or whatever the natural version of that is), and though I admittedly don't know enough to argue either side of that, there are people who argue it is. (Not sure if there are many who argue it isn't)

Some of the advertisements are really quite clever. Yes, they are trying to sell stuff, but does watching a commercial in which a hammer is thrown at a big screen with some old guy talking on it make you want to buy a computer? Well, maybe that's a bad example because they are actually saying something interesting in that one, but the point is that if you weren't going to buy a computer before you saw that commercial you probably wouldn't buy one after you saw it... Watching a commercial won't force you into buying something right? However, it can sometimes give you a laugh. Just remember not to buy things because you saw it on TV. Buy things you need (or want) for their own merits. Come to think of it, you can buy things for whatever reason you see fit, however I will buy things because I need or want them on their own merits, not because some marketing makes it look attractive. Though sadly, sometimes the marketing influences other peoples buying decisions and for compatibility reasons I am forced to buy the same product, rather than a better made competitors product. I myself am pro-choice but this isn't what I'm disputing... (That is something I'll never argue simply because it's not something I can change anyones mind on.) I'd just like to dispute your Hitler comment. Yes, I'm totally agreed he did a lot of horrendous stuff, including some of the research he had carried out. However, you shouldn't write off everything somebody did as being evil simply because some of the stuff he did was REALLY bad. I don't know enough history to point out anything he may have done that was a good idea, or helped people, or whatever, but I think your argument could be used to say something along the lines of "Hitler did XX so therefore we shouldn't do XX". This however doesn't hold up if you insert XX to be something good he may have done. (Again, I dont know that he did, IANAH(I am not a historian)) I think a better way of making the argument might be to say something along the lines of "Of course, one could say that (insert particular example of Hitler's unethical experiments here) was done by Germany, so we should research this too." It sounds very similar to your line, except that I'm talking about a specific example of something that Hitler did that we don't like (for some reasons) as opposed to just something Hitler did and so therefore we shouldn't do it because Hitler did it and we don't like Hitler. (for some reasons)

Finally, I agree with your idea that we shouldn't just research something simply because someone else is researching the same thing and that we must weigh this against our ethics, I'm just saying that the way you made your argument should possibly be slightly altered. (Maybe I'm nitpicking, or misinterpretting your sentence)
