  1. Re:App permissions on How Mobile Apps Are Reinventing the Worst of the Software Industry · · Score: 1

Here's my take. Some app wants Contact List access for its "sharing" feature. I have no intention of sharing, though I use the app's other functions. Is there any reason not to use XPrivacy to feed the app an empty contact list? Bear in mind, this isn't about blocking ads or whatever, but effectively disabling optional functionality.

Check out Xposed framework + XPrivacy then. Should be what you're looking for to granularly control permissions. And I mean *granularly*.

This app is likely one of my favorites for managing my Samsung GS4. I don't install a lot of adware apps, preferring to pay to not have to worry about popups or banners. But even still, I like having XPrivacy's filter and log showing me which apps are doing things I don't want them to do. Especially apps that are supposed to be "sleeping". Facebook and its Messenger are bad at constantly polling the phone and network info even when logged out. LLama + Taskkill to the rescue!

Anyway, back to XPrivacy. Why should I let an app like IMDB know my location? I don't use it to find movie tickets. I have Flixster for that. So with XPrivacy, I can feed IMDB garbage location info and it runs happily ignorant. The other thing I love about XPrivacy is I get a notification every time an app is updated, even core apps, so I can check permission changes.

Firstly, I haven't played games on PC since ages ago, so I never used Blues for gaming info. I've been a console gamer since the beginning of home consoles and still play on console today.

That said, Blue's was big enough "back then" that in the early 2000's I knew who they were, what they did and of their reputation - good and bad. Blue's predates wiki-based gaming sites by maybe 15 years? Were wikis even a thing in 2000? PC gamers of old (like the ones who played the original Thief) know where to go to get their info.

Also, thank you for making me try your "wiki bluesnews" search - today I learned there's a Blue's Clues wiki ^^

Samsung GS4 user here, still running JellyBean 4.2. Heard about AppOps (system-level permission manager) that Google decided to pull over how it affected apps' ability to access permissions if the user wanted to deny specific ones (like Location, SD card, shell).

Enter XPosed framework + XPrivacy. 10 minutes with XPrivacy's access logs showed several apps constantly pinging certain permissions including some I'd decided to deny. As in, almost none of my apps gets Location except those that directly need it.

However, finding a way to actually stop these apps cycling on and off in the background proved a challenge until I found Llama + the TaskKill plugin for Tasker is very good at killing (force-closing) apps. I have about 20 events defined to cover the most obnoxious apps. I can use the apps like normal, but once I switch to something else and the marked app is in the background for a specified interval (I use 5 minues for most) it executes a force kill. You may be saying this is overkill, but for me it was the ONLY way I could stop Facebook Messenger from firing up even if I didn't use it. My wife does from time to time, so I keep it around. But as long as Facebook is running (fore or background) Messenger will be restarted, My solution was to kill both after a 5 minute delay.

I also wound up using ES Task Manager to deny startup privs to a bunch of things, so my boot time is really short. With Llama on duty to kill apps after normal use, I find a lot less in the XPrivacy logs and I'm not as concerned about battery life and performace.

You mean, like subscription TV service, aka, cable or satellite? I vaguely remember when our house got hooked up for cable about 30-ish years ago and the promise* then was that the cable-based channels would be mostly ad-free since we were paying up front. That lasted more or less 10-15 years I'd say (if you give networks a pass on promos for their own lineups).

It's sad really. I want to cut the cord so badly but my wife hasn't been convinced yet. I need to build a slick PVR / HTPC thingy that handles streaming from the net seamlessly and will stream to our tabets / laptops etc. and maybe I can sell her on it...

Your car may lock its steering wheel when power is cut, but no car I've driven in a quarter-century does. I've had many occasions to key the motor off at speed (isolating engine and transmission when diagnosing problems) and steering continues working, though unassisted.

So long as the key is in the ACC or ON positions the wheel lock should not engage. Also, if you're in a manual or are quick enough with an automatic (and don't go to neutral first), putting the key back to ON will re-fire the engine.
