Being a pro does not make you immune to making mistakes.
Interestingly, though not a pro, I turn off my traction control when it's wet PRECISELY because of my mistake-making ability. I told my kids I do it to keep me honest. Meaning, I have to pay attention to what I'm doing with the throttle in wet conditions to avoid wheelspin (especially around corners) rather than rely blindly on the TSC system.
My logic is that building the reflexes into muscle memory (as I did with my older, non-ABS'ed car) will serve me well in cases I'm behind the wheel of a car without driver aids. It also helps me understand what the limits are (of my reflexes and the electronic aids) so I can adjust my speed according to conditions.
Bicyclists here are supposed to follow the established automobile rules, yet most cyclists I see don't give a flip about stop signs/crosswalk indicators/red lights. I know full well if I drove like these paragons cycle I'd be buried under the jail by now.
I appreciate cycling and honestly wish I lived and worked such that I could ditch my car too. But so long as were forced by circumstance to co-exist, please mind the signs - I hate lawfully coming to an intersection and nearly flattening the cyclist who didn't feel like stopping when indicated...
Also, is it just me or do many cyclists cycle with chips on their shoulders?
... Now that I'm done picking my jaw up off the floor I think I'm going to try this with the apps I already have.
That said, I've taken great pains to only install apps with a decent critical mass of reviews or trustable endorsements. And I pay rather than get the "free" versions so I don't risk ad-network attacks.
Really? We didn't have x a millennia ago but we do now and we should avoid it because reasons?
I won't bother pointing out loads of nice things we didn't have before that, having now, has made us a lot happier, safer, more productive or just plain given us new experiences. Even so, I wouldn't mind having something like this so that when the motion alert popped on my phone I could eyeball the screen to see if it was the cat, the kids coming home or that spree burglar who's been making short work of the neighborhood near us.
Oh, and that guy was partially caught on one homeowner's outdoor cams so cops have a good description of his truck (assuming it's not a one-off hotwire) and I think a profile of him too.
Well, on days I don't take my kids to school, I go through one light that's literally 3-4 minutes long and another that's 2-3. That's a lot of tweets read. Maybe a turn or two of Angry Birds.
I'm sorry if I hold up traffic at a light - I really am. I try very hard not to be *that* driver because it's not only annoying (and wasteful as you point out), but even if you make it through with me, someone else is stuck an extra light cycle (ha!) because of my tardiness. But do you know what my current numebr one distraction in the car is right now? The radio. Trying to find a station that isn't playing the same song I heard twice already today, or that's in a 3-minute commercial block, or is letting their on-air "talent" do a little improv. I'm seriously looking into a connectivity kit for my car so I can do away with local radio altogether and either play tracks from my library or stream Pandora/Shoutcast/etc.
You do realise not all app use need be while in motion? During car-warmup, start an Audible book playing. If you have kids in carpool, there's an easy 15 minutes parked for app-ing. Got to work a little early? Goof off for a bit or catch up on news/email/etc.
In all seriousness, even while traveling, there's all sorts of things one could do with apps at red lights that would have no impact on attention while moving. I mourn all lives lost due to accidents, app-caused or not. But to prevent all of humanity from benefiting safely from changes in technology because a minority of people is irresponsible is, well, irresponsible!
I thank you for taking time to reply, and for your candor. Also, my sympathies on the reason for your exit - I hope all worked out well and that you're both in better places now!
Not sure if it's a character flaw or facet, but I'm immensely curious about people's lives, and when a glimmer of personal truth comes out, I latch on.
[...]and wanted to call someone that did have a cell phone without my (then) wife knowing about it.
Since you put this out there, I'm curious. Why didn't you want your wife to know? Planning a surprise party for her? Clandestine rendezvous? Buying something without approval?
Meaning, there are too many layers added onto newsy items, but without adding value. It's also why I rarely click on any news/vid links outside of larger sites I've decide to allow. And why I avoid local news stations like the plague. The number of ad network hooks is unreal sometimes!
It's also why I love NoScript and wish it was on Chrome...
Hm. Dissenting sentiment here. Granted, my family and I only stayed 4 days in NYC, in a loft overlooking Times Square (awesome!). But over a year on and we still consider that trip to be the pinnacle of our family vacationing, with nearly 20 years of travel on us.
Yes, some of your items are valid concerns but maybe not as much for a tourist. Iunno. We didn't find much in the way of garbage and stink except off of main roads. The noise and bustle were attractive to us, and I personally dig Bloomberg's ambitions. I think he's a bit off but I do understand his motivations.
I have no idea what it'd be like to work in the city, especially if I had to commute in and out every day. That kind of travel time seems like a special Hell better reserved for those to take advantage of others. Not hard-working types.
Also, everyone scoffed when the idea of a Dorito-shelled taco was first introduced. Now the Bell is adding even more varieties. Never underestimate the willingness of Marketing to seek out valuable demos!

MSM would love to, but since all their brains have been eaten by the zombies, they don't have the imagination!
Wouldn't that make your c the cost of the hot-swap bay?
What does it say about me that I find this plan interesting? I would consider subscribing to your newsletter.
Good point...

I really don't like the inability to confirm a mod-choice. I'm sorry, jalopezp, that was supposed to be Insightful.
I bought (and still have!) a Jaguar just for Tempest 2k. Great gameplay of the original with a trippy, addictive soundtrack!
Too bad the union of Jag owners, Tempest fans and Vita owners is likely quite small ^^
Why? You didn't like iCarly? Miss that show...
I see what you did there...

And good morning to you, too!

Ugh. Stupid stupid non-changeable voting control. Posting to undo. Meant as Insightful!

I can drive manual! Does that mean /. has a more engaging experience and feels more directly connected to its users?

I'm honestly curious...
Online Leagues of Legend, perhaps?
This. Is. Why. I. Hate. "Reblogging".

Ah, cool! Thank you!

30 seconds?! Is your Google-fu rusty?

Keep your Twinkies. Zingers are the superior creme-filled cake. Because of the icing! Mmm, vanilla-flavored, artificially-colored sugar topping!
