    That demonstrates a clear disjoint from reality.
    Interestingly, you can't buy them directly from the Mint at face value, either.

    Eleventy dozen messages on the first page, NOT A ONE talking about the subject at hand, to whit - the proposed traveling wave reactor design. But plenty of kibitzing about situation in Japan, and detailed misnalysis of various other reactor designs and plain non-nuclear power generation solutions. I guess it was my mistake to not read with a +3 threshold and expect meaningful discourse.

    So if it all melts down into one big blob and sinks into the Earth, why not just leave it there, run some pipes to force in water and some pipes to extract steam, and run generators off that? It's not like you could make the mess any worse, right?

    OK, so you'd probably be running radioactive steam through your generator loop, but they have to deal with that with reactors, don't they?

    This is the problem.

    I don't have an issue with nuclear power from a scientific or engineering standpoint.
    But, in the real world, the bean-counters and politicians get involved. Corners get cut, procedures get "streamlined" and awkward truths are swept under the rug.

    We can build reasonably safe nuclear power plants. We just don't want to invest the money to do so.
