Saying this you must also believe that McDonalds has the best food in the world. Over 13 bln sold:-)
No, but I'm not going to say that Ray Croc or any of his subsequent CEO's "don't know what they're talking about". They *clearly* know the food biz. And who would I be to say that they don't?
Only by trimming the wheat from the shaft can we crystalize our impact on the world.
If you're going to write bullshit that makes you come across as a pretentious blowhard, you should at least use correct metaphors. It's "wheat from the chaff", jackass.
That sounds like a GREAT idea! I think that all sensitive information should be stored in MySQL! I also don't lock the doors of my house and put up a "Please do not steal anything" sign on the front door.
not working any more, i.e., it's getting hard for Microsoft even to give Windows away.
Really? Silly me. I thought that with all the Linux companies folding and Linux products being discontinued and MS's continued massive profitability that it was the other way around. Facts, schmacks, huh?
Oracle's OLE DB driver for Windows sucks major balls, I've used it. Needed the LOB support, and boy was it hell.
I agree completely. You pertty much have to use MS's Oracle for OLE DB Provider. Oracle's versino has always sucked. Hell, their implementation of it even has a couple of parameters switched when you're passing parameters to a stored proc! It took me a long time to figure that one, since it's not documented. But MS' Oracle drivers are at least acceptable.
Yes, fuck OSS. Why? Because/. is so one-minded, so, hell, delusional that nobody realizes that there are greater implications of companies cutting costs then the chance that they might use your favorite OSS distribution. Jesus, talk about the Borg. The Borg has arrived and it is here.
Oracle has has ODBC support for as long as I can remember. Also, if you're using Windows, it's better to use OLE DB since you then remove an entire layer for better efficiency.
And, SQL isn't anything close to all that a real database (ie: Oracle, DB2, etc.) has to offer. Amateur programmers often completely overlook an entire layer: stored procedures. Mature databases (ie: Oracle as opposed to MySQL) has a very robust native programming language in which the code is compiled and cached in the database, making it often the best way to add business logic. (Note: whitepapers say to use some bullshit middle tier like CORBA or COM which just doesn't fucking scale, no matter what the "experts" say). The best thing that an amateur developer can understand is that something like Oracle or DB2 is a very very mature product which screams compared to any middle tier bullshit. Learn PL/SQL and REALLY build your resume.

Kid, it's called CYA. You'll find out about that when you get your first job, and yes, it's very real. Us grownups can't exactly call mom & dad when we get canned because we didn't do a CYA.
We're not flying a plane here, the world wont end if the mp3 skips a beat. In reality a computer can throw out 6 streams without dropping anything, sure it's not guarenteed, but does that matter?
It does if you're an anti-social anal-retentive geek like the parent poster. That's the kind of guy who won't go see the X-Men movie just because they're not "realistic" enough. Kinda' like the Comic Book Store guy.
Well, if you're an IT director in charge of 1000 machines for a $500 million company, $2500 is chump change. That's one week's salary for one of your 25 DBA's. You don't buy Enterprise if you're just going to run one dinky little web server. And people like you, who expect that everything is supposed to be free are true fucking morons.
today's world, fame is bankable, make no mistake about it.
No it's not. When was the last time you paid your rent in fame? "Sir, your rent of $900 was due 3 days ago." "Will you take 'fame'? I did write the utlity blahblahblah" No. Fame has nothing to do with money. That's the whole point of this article. This guy wrote something very cool, but cool doesn't pay your bills. I don't care if Michael Jackson came into my store. He's still gotta pay with cash, check, or major credit card. Him being famous doesn't help me to pay my phone bill.
and do not plan to until prices for 10 songs goes below 20USD.
Where in the hell are shopping where CD's are $20+?? You must be shopping at the big-super-mega stores. Shop at your small, local retailer. I don't remember paying any more than $15 for a new CD... well, ever.
IBM is a huuuuuge comapny. Just because one tiny part of one division supports Linux, doesn't mean that the entire company runs on Linux/OSS software. In fact, the people that I know at IBM have never even *seen* Linux before. OSS is a new and very tiny part of IBM's business. They are by no means an OSS company. They're just ccovering all of their bases.
Maybe this would be a good time to promote a publisher that releases stuff in open formats
This is really, really simple. The MOST open format by a long shot is paper. Always will be. Anybody on the planet who can read can use a real book. Even ASCII requires a several hundred dollar outlay for a computer. Books aren't broken. If it ain't broke... you know the rest.
That would be billions of dollars to Open Source to compensate for an unlevel playing field until it is leveled.
How can it possibly be an "unlevel playing field" when many OSS products cost $0? What that says is that OSS products are so bad in most cases that they can literally not even be given away. The playing field is very level. Either you pay a lot for closed software that works out of the box, or you pay $0 for something that requires a good bit of work. Closed source companies shouldn't eb penalized just because OSS products aren't up to snuff.
My point is that there is a balance that's possible, and right now, for most people in the western world, that "balance" is slanted very heavily in favor of gadgets and "stuff" over substance. I believe that you can still have substance in your life and not live like a monk.
Seriously, what do the self-righteously self-deprived do with their copious free time?
That's just it, I'm not wealthy enough to have ANY free time. None. Zilch. Zero. And that's the point of the article, if you have "free time", then you should be considered wealthy, since most of us spend all of our time just working to pay the bills, and time with friends & family. Between work and my friends, I have exactly -0- time for stupid toys. Hell, I don't even have a TV!
Then I take it that you wouldn't object to graft and bribery among government officials, since the profit motive in the public sector is obviously such a great motivator.
Really? How did I imply that profit is the most important part of society above all else. I simply said that profit is not a bad thing, and without it, society would grind to a halt (can you say "barter"?)
... they pay YOU to blow stuff up.
Oh wait, maybe they do that in RTP, too.

Microsoft has great marketing skills but no idea what they are talking about. It shows in this interview with Bill.
Microsoft is one of the largest companies in the world, and Gates is one of the wealthiest people in the planet. And you are who, exactly?
Looks like it fits! I'm flattered.

Not only does /. sound like a parody of itself, but most of the people on here sound like Larry Groznic

I'm getting ready for the next civil war, myself.
