GAAAAAAAAAAAH I can't believe, what a moron. Just because some people are "anti-american" (just because they CRITICIZE the things they don't like instead of just saying "Hey, it's USA, I love USA, look, I have no brain, I can't think by myself!"

Linux was created by a non-american guy. OOoooooh, I guess Linus Torvalds made a backdoor to take control of USA satellites and missiles, because he is "anti-american".

Let's face it. That argument was REALLY stupid.

Don't take me wrong, I like Linux, I would love to use just Linux. But I have some problems: My printer doesn't work with Linux (Lexmark 3200, there is a driver but it just plain sucks) for example.

There's an important Research Institute in Brazil that DOESN'T ACCEPT NON-WORD DOCUMENTS. If you can't use Word, you can't apply to a job or a research project there. MANY companies don't accept anything but Word.

Maybe you are lucky enough to work M$-free. Most of the people can't, because there's that stupid boss that doesn't want to save a file as RTF, PDF. I'm not a Windows fan, I hate to deal with Windows (even W2k!).

Now, back to the the real world

In the real world almost everyone uses Microsoft Office. Now, let's suppose you only use Linux, and you work for a big company, where most of the workers send you Word Documents, PowerPoint presentations, etc. StarOffice sometimes gets lost and can't open it correctly (sometimes it doesn't even open :)).

So, if you NEED to open EVERY document or presentation and you CAN'T just say: "Hey, I don't use Windows, I can't read this", you WILL have to use Office. That's very sad, and I really hate it. But hey, it won't change so fast. MIcrosoft doesn't want any non-MS standard, they want to IMPOSE their standards. They don't even THINK about using some standardized format.

First, I think Microsoft is going to use SOAP, not XML-RPC. Then, Sun may use a third protocol, IBM a modified version of SOAP or XML-RPC, and what would be so great about it? The super-ultra-mega XML platform-independence hype would be nonsense.

Second, if each DBMS (for example) returns the XML its own way, I would have to parse each XML stream differently, wouldn't I? If so, what would be so great about using XML?

Third, I think there're too many W3C "recommendations" for XML. They always want to build something new to do something different. XQuery, XPath, XSalad, Xburger, damn, tomorrow they may build something like DanceML, to make toasters dance :) That's the problem. If XML is supposed to be simple, why make it complicated? XML has its potential, but I think there's VERY VERY VERY MUCH hype. Let's get real, it's not the solution for every problem, it won't solve NP-Complete problems.

I don't have many choices, I can't just quit because here where I live (Curitiba - Brazil), I don't see many companies using Linux (in fact, I don't see many companies at all :)). And, if they use, they want experienced workers (well, I have some experience, but not oficially, just reading tutorials and testing new stuff for fun).
