Hear, hear. I've noticed this dimwit's comments earlier and he clearly has the outsourcing axe to grind. Pity about the "editor" who accepted the story though.
I don't see that the BBC is in trouble, all I see is a bunch of ticked off executives. Kind of like the rich kid in the playground unable to understand why the other kids don't like him or his expensive toys over the tyre-swing in the tree.
Thanks, but no thanks. I'm stuck with using Windows thanks to pointy haired decisions - the enjoyment of running cygwin and figuratively thumbing my nose at the PHBs would be significantly reduced if I used SFU. (Now why do I read that as STFU?!?)
1. Guy goes to the assembler's shop and fills in a menu with the config that he wants. 2. Assembler fills in prices. 3. Guy signs off on prices. 4. Assembler delivers machine, typically within one hour.
You don't need a geeky friend to spec the machine for you. The assembler usually is pretty well informed and most don't shaft their customers. The margins, as one of the parents points out, are so low, that they are desperate for repeat business.
I've had trouble buying some stuff as the assembler kept saying it was a waste of money - it'll be obsolete in 2 weeks.
One of the options is for the operating system. Never seen anyone fill that out. No XP, starter edition or otherwise in sight. Again, the reputable ones will have it in stock if you want it. The smaller guys don't care. Some preload Linux if you ask for it, but the guys who ask for Linux are obviously capable of doing it themselves.
On another note, I've seen many full page ads recently from some manufactures for Linux laptops and desktops.
I'll make sure that their GM of marketing gets your message.
Word of warning, the casing on the Simputer sucks.
It's fairly well designed, but the plastic is, for the lack of a better description, too plasticky. The buttons live in fear of their lives and act as if they might drop dead any moment.
The MilSpec version now, that's cool - looks like a small nuke capable of taking out an suburban Walmart store.
I've tried to buy Encore's Simputer. They're not really into retail or for that matter anything close to "consumer electronics" as we understand the term. They like to sell stuff "vertically" - i.e. they use their Simputer as a platform for specific applications. Look for a link to their handheld military version with GPS etc. Very cool.
I would expect them to do something similar with this device.
You can see a bit of that happening already with the reference to the US company which is planning on using this for some kind of security application.
I hang on a mailing list where there are a lot of retired AT&T 5E guys. The last few weeks has seen a lot of email where these guys are diagnosing faults on their own home lines and then presumably calling up the service provider (Verizon?) to explain exactly what's wrong with the line.
So (1), there are faults on US lines. The author of TFA is way wrong on that and (2), the guys who might possibly be able to fix the problems all got laid off.
I'm okay with being called a fool as well. (It takes one to recognize one, as the saying goes. I see you like Foxnews; that seems consistent with that view.)
BTW, you lost your virtual money in that bet you took with yourself.
I do notice that (like Foxnews), you're trying to divert me from the image of the little children crying as US troops try to clean up after killing their parents at a checkpoint. I wonder how many other such murders are taking place and are unreported simply because no Italian journalist or Chris Hondros aren't there to publicize this.
Think about your view - what would you have done? If the answer is "Follow orders" and/or "shoot" then guess what you should then call yourself?
Don't bother replying - I'm not interested in your views as you appear to be exactly the jackass and fool that you see in others.

Fuck off, racist asshole.
Thanks, but no thanks. I'm stuck with using Windows thanks to pointy haired decisions - the enjoyment of running cygwin and figuratively thumbing my nose at the PHBs would be significantly reduced if I used SFU. (Now why do I read that as STFU?!?)
I had the same problem until today when I decided to find out WTF was happening.

... learning Indian culture and techniques ...
The OP is of Indian origin, going by the name.
Okay, that's going into my sig.
From TFA, "... some of the engineers were turning red, becoming obviously angry at the demo hacking incident ..."
I would think they would be looking at their shoes.
80%? Where'd you pull that number out of? Nasscom link.
Quick, what's China's anti-piracy hotline? Microsoft's doesn't count.
Can you see Walmart quitting China? I think not.
Reminds me of that miserable failure.
Why wouldn't you just carry your laptop out the door? Holds a lot more and easier to carry off.
I would guess less than 3 years.
Remember they have been actively pushing their own standards for DVD-like players, 3G networks, WiFi.
Well put.
Many years ago I saw the following dialog in a cartoon:
Teacher: "Who discovered the Niagara Falls?"
Little Kid: "The people who lived there."
I think the sequence ends with the little kid wearing dunce's hat.
Can't wait for an ipod warning to join this lot.

No, wait; they already did "Do not eat iPod Shuffle."
Here's how it works:
1. Guy goes to the assembler's shop and fills in a menu with the config that he wants.
2. Assembler fills in prices.
3. Guy signs off on prices.
4. Assembler delivers machine, typically within one hour.

Also, they are a very Linux centric shop.
So (1), there are faults on US lines. The author of TFA is way wrong on that and (2), the guys who might possibly be able to fix the problems all got laid off.
Wow, that was fast. Got nothing else to do, eh?

Then, IMO, you are a murderer AND a jackass.
Given the context, I'm okay with you thinking I'm a jackass.
Yeah, the Scotsman. Find me this in the mainstream US media. IMO, this kind of story needs to get more coverage.
http://news.scotsman.com/international.cfm?id=6951 2005
So a pdf file about a murder of an Italian at a checkpoint is news while US troops routinely murder Iraqi civilians and that's not covered?
802.11Volts DC, anyone?
http://www.naukri.com will get you started.
While there is no H1b quota nonsense, you do need to get a company to hire you first and then sponsor a work visa.
Good luck.
