Many of the NYC services you think you "pay for" are actually paid for by NYC residents (trust me, this is not a small tax to pay, especially if you are an "unincorporated business"). You are paying New York State tax. So the roads, schools, and various city services, etc. are paid for by us (i.e. city residents). I really don't want to rant here, and I'm not a follower of the "red state welfare" crap, but NYC sends more tax money to NYS and the Fed than it ever sees back. There are all sorts of good reasons for this, but don't whine to us about taxes. We already pay more than our fair share.
I am a fan of Apple, but it's worth noting that you can configure Latitude D620 with a Quadro graphics card and 1GB of RAM for ~$1483. Yeah, you'll be running Windows, but the Dell weighs in at under 5 lbs. Ouch. 5.2 lbs is too heavy for me. The new MacBook is thin, but not light. Sigh.
You are not going to find an "unbiased source" on this sort of issue. There are good arguments, and bad arguments, regardless of perspective or bias. Vint Cerf has made some pretty arguments over the years; the fact that we're using one of those "arguments" (i.e. an end-to-end network with "intelligence" at the periphery, not the center) to discuss this issue speaks for itself. The telco "argument" is centralized, inflexible, and extensible only at the whims of the telco (e.g television/POTS). Which is the better argument?
Creates civil asset forfeiture penalties for anything used in copyright piracy. Computers or other equipment seized must be "destroyed" or otherwise disposed of, for instance at a government auction. Criminal asset forfeiture will be done following the rules established by federal drug laws.
Now we know how the FBI will go about upgrading its outdated computer systems.
Questions, questions, questions... You are obviously not thinking of the children. Think of the children, and all questions are answered, all problems solved. Debate? Disadvantages? Costs? Drawbacks? Feh. What about the children, dude? Somehow, somewhere, a child could be in harm's way. If you've got nothing to hide, you have nothing to worry about... unless you're hiding children. Snap to it, bub. Think of the kids.
They also had a name for the very same folk in late 18th century America. The word was patriot.
Perhaps you "learned" American history from an speculative history novel in which the British surpressed the revolutionary uprising. Perhaps your view of history "makes sense" to you. If you are religious, incurious, and statist, then you have little to worry about as far as omnipresent aerial surveillance is concerned. The fascism-to-be will very much represent your interests.
I will never forget the Glow in Fallout. The atmosphere and music were perfect, and I loved the way in which the veil was peeled away from the game's storyline.
I can respect that, although I'm stilled pissed that McCain has seen fit to "make nice" with the same asshats that stabbed him in the back in the 2000 elections (n.b. Rove's "tactics" in the South Carolina Republican primaries).
It's so hard to balance these issues. Will we ever have a president we can feel really good about again? This all makes me so sad...
I think you could feel good about Feingold, Hagel, or (maybe) Mark Warner; possibly others... McCain and H. Clinton have shown themselves to be mere politicians.
Disclaimer: I am of the left side of the fence, sort of a "libertarian with a social conscience".
FISA hardly ever said no. There's only one reason why they would want to hide their spying from FISA... "terrorists" now include their political enemies.
Mod parent up for the last line. There's more to this than listening to the "terrorists."
You have hit the nail on the head. Mod Parent Up!
Denial is a warning sign, buddy.
Omg. Was it too hard to STFW before posting?
Vegas has something for everybody. This is how things should be.
Not to mention "they're".
I think you are wrong. Care to support your claims with some evidence?
Crime, you say? Take a look at the comparative positions of NY metro areas (more than just NYC) vs. FL metro areas with regard to crime.

Business partners do not have guns and enforcement powers.

Governments think they are entitled to money. This attitude needs to change.
Dual-booting XP and OpenBSD is blissfully easy if you use the Windows bootloader (NTLDR). I'm doing just that with a Thinkpad X41.
Happy Birthday, Hemos! If you ever find yourself in Brooklyn, email me for free beer. This offer only applies to Hemos, not all of slashdot. :)

They had a name for folks like yourself in mid-20th-century Europe. I believe it was: collaborator...
Yes! Good times :)

One question: do I get rest XP IRL?
kthxbye!

I think this is sufficient geek cred for Bill G. He is so much more hardcore than you.
