Take for example Metroid Prime (and Metroid Prime: Echoes), a very realistic looking game (as realistic as an alien planet can get anyway), not cartoony at all, and yet both games are very stylish.
I don't think you have to forego realism (or photo-realistic graphics) to keep an interesting artistic direction. Would you say that a city like.. say.. venice, is not stylish? I know I wouldn't. Does it look like "the real thing"? Hell, I guess so, I've never been there.
What I'm trying to say here, and based on what daniil just said, is that there really isn't a "realism vs. style" grudge match, that makes no sense, if your art/design/graphics team can't make your game look "real" while keeping the level design and graphics interesting, then I guess you need to get a new team.
so far the only pay-to-play game on PS2 (that I'm aware of) is EverQuest Online Adventures.
Neither SOCOM or SOCOM II are Pay to play.
What I do wonder, tho, is about xbox live. Does any game so far run on servers? (besides PSO). I read somewhere that so far every xboxLive game runs peer-to-peer. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
I not only consider B&W to be highly overrated, but Peter Molyneux himself is highly overrated. He's always talking about how his games are going to change game design history forever, but he seems to forget FUN. Simple fun is what makes a game compelling. And then you realize the devil is in the details, and comprehend that the game is a design wonder because it's fun yet simple, and attention to detail was never lost. but that will never happen with his games.
Yes, I read that, but there's a difference between being overrated because it was overhyped (Neverwinter nights) and being overhyped and being a dissapointment. Daikatana.
That's what I mean. They're saying the game was overrated because it was overhyped. The game was never overrated. It was overhyped AND a failure.
And splinter cell should be there. Once you replay the game and the pretty graphics have been seen, you notice the poor AI and the horrible collision detection.
I once clipped through a guard while going up a ladder. The guy didn't notice me. I then jumped on his head. It's a good thing we didn't clip then, I might have hurt my balls.
First of all, I am trying very hard not to laugh at the "leading game expert" in the article. "Laura Fryer, director of the Xbox Advanced Technology Group", now we know how microsoft got into the games business. With people like that considered experts, heck, I'd make my own 50 kg console.
Do we really want games to become mainstream? Look at "Enter The Matrix". Do we really care if we're considered geeky because we play games a lot? Look at the N-gage: they think they're going to sell it just based on image. They're wrong.
I don't want games to get dumbed down, all pretty images and no soul. I have pr0n for that. I don't want every bozo down the street talking about games, ignoring the real classics and thinking they're just *cool* because they're now playing Final Fantasy XXX. If games become mainstream, then developers will have to put more and more games out every year, and we (the true gamers) will be left with yet another Tomb Raider clone. (which BTW, is a franchise that should be put to sleep: TR became too mainstream, and that's why it got all shitty-like)
Oh, and just as a closure: I don't think you can call yourself a "leading game expert" just because you "play games a lot".
I think the developers should make the game worth playing if you only have a few hours a week to play it.
Well, I think people shouldn't play the game if they don't have enough time to do so. After all, they're the ones doing the buying. It's not like developers rammed it down your throat.
Look, you need a valid credit card to play the game, which (usually) means you have to be "legal" to play it, which (most of the time) means you're mature enough to make choices and be responsible for them. (after all, you've got a "credit" card for a reason). So, if you're the kind of person who would lose your job, leave your kid in a mobile oven, and basically let the whole world go to hell while playing EQ, then you have to be responsible for it, and accept the fact that you have a problem. Blaming the gaming industry for it is not going to solve it. Just leave the game alone.
If it is a disease, there's an easy cure, that's also very cheap (free) and effective; willpower.
Free as in beer, or as in Linux?;)
No, really, it's the same thing over and over, had it been a 12 year old who chopped somebody's head off with an axe, they'd blamed it on EQ as well. It's the parents fault. If you're hooked on something as powerful as a videogame, then at least check your prios before sitting for a "quick fix".
For starters, she should have never left the kid in the car.
for those of us who use ICQ and forget to take off the sounds... It's 2 am, you're downloading stuff, and ICQ is on.. somebody from your list logs in. *knock knock* MAN!!! I jumped right outta my chair and went to the door.. checked.. nobody there.. hmm.. must have been my imagination.. when walking back to my chair, that someone decides to drop a line *uh-oh!!* YIKES!! it was weird, because by then, I realized it was my ICQ making noises, but I had my scare already.. hehehehe.
Nothing beats Silent Hill, on PSX. I haven't played SH2 for PS2, but I've heard it's not as scary as the first one.
Use the same formula: lights out, no ambient music or anything that might blow the atmosphere, play it at night. Alone. You'll have one hell of a night. I know I did. And I fancy myself as a pretty brave guy. Although dating scares the crap out of me. Oh, umkay.
Yeah fucking right. Look at the WTC pictures, you stupid fuck. A country that no one fears.. You better live in fear from now on, because the people from that country will shove another plane right up your butt.
Leave that stupid ass superiority to already dead people. You are not untouchable, just because you live in a big nation.
My boss works on a fucking MAC with NETSCAPE... and every time I do something and look at it on my screen on IE and then on Mozilla AND Netscape, it looks kinda right.. Not perfect, but It looks RIGHT. But then the stupid fuck decides to take a look @ my work on his stupid ibook on netscape and everything looks like SHIT!! no css on dropdowns, the size is all fucked up... and shit like that..
Now, don't get me wrong, I LIKE mozilla (not netscape so much!), but why can't they make the things look right over different OSes???
And anyone who uses Linux NOW knows it's not crap, and those few who are lucky enough to have an Itanium system AND have installed the 64-bit Distro of Choice(TM) know they're going to run into problems.
Yes, but the real problem does not lie there. See, I know linux is good for me. And I know windows is not. But that's because I run linux, and I used to run windowsNT. Now, they run windows, and they know windows WORKS for them, and they think LINUX sucks, because they cannot make it work. If those Itaniums really fuck up (and it's becoming a rule in every intel release), and any distro is out with the Itaniums, those distros are the ones to take the blame. The everyday end-user does not think about the hardware architecture, they say it's the OS that fails... We want more ppl to begin using any flavor of linux, although we'd like them to get a brain before they do, but if what I said before really happens, more and more ppl is going to turn their backs on the distros.
And now that I think about it, the OS SHOULD be able to bypass processor failures and keep stable.. don't you think?

More like:
(e.g. Russia and Poland, where hackers were able to reconstruct the whole game based on the leaked E32k3 demo levels.)

It's still an old game, but yes, it was brought to the US as a PS2 game.
so far the only pay-to-play game on PS2 (that I'm aware of) is EverQuest Online Adventures.

Forget the levels, people bought the game because of the _story_, right?
:P
oh, wait..

There's a big difference. And I know how to read.
Gamespy doesn't know jack about anything.
They've put TR: Angel Of Darkness and Enter The Matrix as overrated games.
Those games are not overrated. I've yet to come across a score higher than 8 for any of those. Those games were just overhyped.
But gamespy wouldn't know the difference.
hmm.. I don't think Enter The Matrix was overrated. T'was overhyped, but that's a whole different thing.
Of course, this is gamespy, and you know how it goes with them.
And splinter cell should be there. Once you replay the game and the pretty graphics have been seen, you notice the poor AI and the horrible collision detection.

Doom 3 should be all about CO-OP.
It would make it a little bit less scary, I think, but deathmatch on DooM III is just plain dumb.
Anybody knows if there will be co-op in the final build? All I've read about is vs. games.
