    it doens't take long to figure out where the other pics are.

    That's a fantastic idea ! If this works, we'll be able to use it for useful computation ! It might sound crazy, but with such a virtual computer, one could make computations to help SETI or to cure cancer skyrocket ! How did they come up with such a great idea ?

    Just compile the much shorter Linux 0.1.81 (this will take much less time), diff it with an empty file giving you Linux -0.1.81 and diff that one with Linux 2.4.19 giving you Linux 2.4.19 -(-0.1.81)=Linux 2.4.19+0.1.81= Linux 2.6.0. If they choose to call it Linux 3.0, do the same trick with Linux 0.5.81 instead.

    I am the original poster. Actually I don't need a visa to work in the UK, my EU citizenship will do. But I am not going to trade the belgian rain for the british rain.

    I am the original poster. Thanks for the many answers. Too bad I could not participate more actively due to hours incompatibility between US and EU. At first glance it will take ages to read everything. One thing I noticed is the frequent mention of the Peace Corps. I should have told that IANAUSC. I am not an US citizen. No peace corps for me.

    That's not the same. I have not touched WordStar since 1994-something, but I am certain It could run in a DOS window. And it's supposed to be the OS's job to abstract the network "as a disk drive".

    e.g.

    Drives are so reliable that you don't need a long warrantee - Drives are so unreliable we can't afford to long warrentee.
    I propose a dictionary that translates illiterate speak to reality.

    Went to a citytrip to London. Stole the proof-of-concept prototype from the Science Museum. Stole the Avian Carriers from Trafalgar Square.

    You overcomfortable rich kid ! A C64 is just a toy with loads of eye candy. I am still doing it with my Difference Engine 2.0 and IPoAC (IP over avian carriers). More would just be superfluous luxury. Besides, shouldn't you have typed your message in all caps ?

    I am now reading the brand new edition of ast's Computer Networks. There's a page about ast's other works. One of them is "Modern Operating Systems, 2nd edition". At the end of the book's description, ther's the following sentence :
    Finally, two detailed case studies are given : UNIX/Linux and Windows 2000
    Remember when ast said the following to Linus ?
    Be thankful you are not my student. You would not get a high grade for such a design :-)

    College students from 30 years ago shaped the present. Heck, Valenti and Rosen probably went to college at that time.

    Those students were fighting against viet nam war and against the consumption society. They were all potheads.

    Now those ex students push Bush for a new Gulf war, forbid you to get free (as in every incremental item is free) things for free, and push the "war against drug".

    Mr Fusion doesn't feed the DeLorean, it powers the Flux Capacitor, as the whole plot of episode 1 revolved around the lack of plutonium. The DeLorean itself is powered by gas (which again is the whole plot in episode 3)
