  1. CRM-114 didn't work out for me on Spamassassin Beats CRM-114 In Anti-Spam Shootout · · Score: 1

I tried CRM-114 after the previous Slashdot article. I payed a lot of attention to my email and did all the required training. After getting over the initial hump of misclassified email it got to a steady low level. Once it made a mistake and I had to train it, though, I would get a run of false positives and negatives for a bit until it settled out again.

What sent me back to SA was that a number of CRM-114 misclassifications were marking ham as spam. Losing a real message in the sea of spam is much more of a concern for me than getting a bit of spam with the regular stuff. It is very rare that I get ham classified as span in SA.

  2. Life Balance is my choice on Best To-Do List Software? · · Score: 1

Several others have recommended Life Balance, and that is my choice too. LB follows a philosophy of assigning priorities to different parts of your life in order to bring things into balance. So, for example, if you feel that work is taking too much time out of your life you lower the priority for work all work tasks are accoringly moved to a lower place on the list according to home life and any other categories.

LB is hierarchical, so you can schedule tasks so that they don't show up until subtasks are complete.

While I mentioned the LB philosophy of balance, I have started using David Allens Getting Things Done approach. Life Balance works with it quite well and actually helps to keep me doing it.

I have both Palm and PC versions of Life Balance. the two synchronize so I can use either one. When I bought the Palm version it was the most expensive piece of Palm software I had bought. I begrudged them the money, but I'm hooked on the program. I have since bought the desktop version, which is easier to use when I'm at my PC.

  3. How was the stealing supposed to have taken place? on Ken Brown Responds to His Critics · · Score: 1

Brown is intent on proving that Linus stole from Minix or UNIX. In what way was he supposed to have done this? Did he look at how they behaved and write something that does the same thing? Sure, and there is nothing wrong with that. Did he steal source code? If so it should be easy enough to compare Minix or the Lion document and see what was stolen. OK, maybe it is tedious to compare the source code. Brown should provide some concrete proof such as lines of stolen code rather than trying to attack Linus by saying he couldn't have written Linux.

While I did my part to contribute to the Trustic database, I wasn't real sure about their methods. I submitted spam messages as they requested, but I had to tell them which address to consider to be a spam gateway. The addresses above that are marked positive. I always picked the first address outside of rr.com, but for all I know the nearest Roadrunner smtp system is a spam forwarder and I should have flagged it as negative. Pooling lots of people's ignorance won't necessarily provide good information.

Aside from not being a dimly lit location, there was a cop behind him in line to help when the cashier refused the bill.

The point of the article was that the profiling features in Tivo and Amazon.com can give incorrect recommendations. The man who did not want recommendations for books about pregnancy went and rated a number of other books to try to fix Amazon's suggestions. Since he WANTED accurate suggestions, he should have told Amazon not to use the one book for recommendations as I suggested. If you don't want to make it easy for them to influence your sales decision, you should go to each book that Amazon uses as a basis for recommendations and tell them not to use it.

  19. Lame posting, lame pregnant gay man paragraph on When Profiling Goes Wrong · · Score: 3, Informative

Regarding the pregnant gay man, Amazon has a feature where you can see what the basis was for a recommendation. If you find it was based on a book or other product that you do not want them to consider for your recommendations, you click a button and that is the end of it. The writer of the article should have done more research.

  20. I use mine every day on Do People Really Use Their PDAs? · · Score: 1
My PDA (Palm III/Visor Deluxe/Clie 610) has been a major lifestyle improvement. The killer app for me is Supermemo, a flash card program that gives you the cards you get wrong more often than the cards you get write. There is a PC version, but I like being able to work on Supermemo wherever I am.

    Other useful apps:
    • Life Balance: Fancy todo list
    • Datebk5: Fancy calendar
    • Oxford English-Chinese Dictionary: I'm learning Chinese so it is handy having a dictionary with me. I also just bough an English-Spanish dictionary to take with me to the Dominican Republic.
    • Strip: Password storage program. This way I have my DES-3 encrypted passwords with me whereever I go.
    • Handy Shopper: Shopping list and general purpose checklist program. I use it for shopping and packing for trips.
    • iSilo: Stores web pages and plain text documents for convenient access.
    • Xmap Handheld: maps of anywhere in the US.

None of these are forced uses. While I can obviously survive without them, they make owning a PDA worthwhile.

I'm also a bit baffled by the poster. Charging a PDA only wastes time if you sit there watching it charge. I haven't had to reload software that often on my Palms. Syncing may take a few minutes, but I don't sit and watch it either.

They key to a PDA is to find a useful application for what you do. For me it was programs to help me learn Chinese, but there are programs for lots of other areas of life. Go to Palmgear and find something you can use.
