Whether we agree with the law or not, Joe broke it. The University appears to be interested in protecting him (and all students) as much as possible.

You seem to instantly agree with the RIAA's allegations and this got me thinking that the school is doing the same thing. Now that he's faced with a 97 billion dollar lawsuit they're not doing anything to protect him and the university is supporting the RIAA's assertion that he is guilty. In court, the case could now be even tighter because lines from the letter like no matter how much education we provide, people will still break the law / situation with Joe Nievelt ... allowed the problem to grow to the size and scope that it is today / seriousness of the allegations against Mr. Nievelt state that the university fully agrees with the allegations.

Also, by writing this letter the university is admitting that it is their duty to police the network, so the RIAA may now be able to sue the school itself for providing the sharing network and computers and not effectively monitoring.

Then on Monday a U.S. F-16 fighter jet fired at and destroyed a Patriot battery's radar dish after the pilot said the Patriot had "locked on" to the plane. Published reports have linked the mishaps to software problems with the Patriot.

  12. Re:DRM? on Creative SoundBlaster Audigy 2 Reviewed · · Score: 5, Informative

From the interview with Creative's worldwide marketing manager..

Q: The digital outputs are disabled during DVD Audio playback, are there any plans to add more Digital Right Management and copy limitations to the Audigy 2 or any future product?

A: At Creative we don't look at it as adding "limitations" to our technology. We wanted to add DVD-Audio, which we feel (and I am sure all your readers will agree) adds a massive benefit to our product line. However, DVD-Audio incorporates certain copy-protection features that MUST be in place before support of the format is allowed. This is not unique to our card. Even standard DVD-Audio players are not allowed any form of "bit-for-bit" digital output while playing DVD-Audio. Some solutions use proprietary digital connections to deliver the digital content to their amp, etc., which means that you can't plug the digital output into a digital recording device.

Therefore as an "Enabler," we evaluate the benefit of a format against the limitations to the user. For instance, we also support WMA. This has requirements to support their DRM implementation, which we do. Remember that all these technologies do NOT stop you from making personal copies of unprotected media. They simply protect that content using the protection methods of the format.

In short, will we ever add generic "Copy-Protection" technologies to our products that stop users doing what they want with their music/ audio? No.

Will we ever add more formats that may incorporate stringent copy-protection technologies to protect itself? Most definitely, if the format is desirable to our users.

Finally, although there may be very stringent copy-protection formats, it is normally in the field of protecting "exact" digital copies. There is normally flexibility where analog/ low quality copies wish to be made. For instance, the DVD-Audio format does give some flexibility in the areas of 16-bit/ 44.1kHz Digital outputs, or for making analog copies. It was not possible to enable this from day one, but we will work to expose this and provide as much flexibility to our users as we move forward.

The business service, at the same price of $39.95 caps at 5Gb and $3 per additional Gb. Don't most ISPs mean gigabyte in the hard drive company sense of 5,000,000,000 bytes when they say this? Anyway, the only real difference between the two plans seems to be server use of upstream bandwidth.

Also, what do they mean by 'Point-to-point' connections? Do they physically wire you up with someone else in the community? If you both have a 100Mbs connection to the Internet, why would you even want that?

I destroyed my boot partition trying to remove c-dilla. It was my fault, but I was desperate to get rid of it. I probably could have fixed it with fdisk /mbr or a linux boot disk, but I had everything backed up and just decided to low level format the drive.

Also, it looks like at least one big boycott ended a while ago with Intuit saying they would remove c-dilla later this fall and never use it again, however I think I'll be using Taxcut next year.
