  2. what if it settles up? on iTunes Music Store sells 275,000 Tracks in 18 Hours · · Score: 1

if that 200k songs represent say 50k users, what's to say that the number doesn't begin to rapidly rise? this may particularly be the case if connection issues prevented downloads. i am a mac user, though my primary personal machine is a tablet pc. when itunes is available for windows, i will likely start to purchase some music. if they can get 25% of my purchases that's $500 a year... though most of my purchases are from independent labels. purchasing universal music is looking less and less silly.

  3. HiDef... on Sony Vaio GT3/K: You Spilled Your Laptop on my Camcorder · · Score: 1

  4. abstraction on If I Had My Own Distro... · · Score: 1

isn't the idea of longhorn, befs, apple's current work... to remove the file structures imposed upon something inherently different. i mean, what are folders? abstractions. so, perhaps the solution is to create a different abstraction which keeps the current structure. this abstraction can be a database, a browser... but, the interface has never been linux's strong point. the humane interface, by raskin is a great place to start though.

  5. standard cds... on Apple Introduces iTunes Music Store, iTunes 4, new iPod · · Score: 1

yes, itunes creates standard cds, and pretty darn rapidly too! i don't use itunes much since i have lots of independent and obscure stuff, but i cut a cd for a friend, and whoa! it was like 4 or 5 minutes to a full cd mix.

with respect to the service, i would like to see lower costs... but this will likely come with time. similar to cell phone calls, less cost per minute more volume. i don't want to worry when my disk fries. just spend another $20 bucks to fill it back up.

'All of the sudden it is OK to (put) something other than Windows.'

huh? when was microsoft going to port to amd's 64 bit processor? they seem to be going out of their way to dis amd. this could be the point where the paths between various flavors of unix and windows part, hardware-wise. linux et al will run on anything, and windows will run on intel. not good for windows imho. any comments on the potential for substantially better image and video processing performance under a 64 bit os (memory)?

i use verizon unlimited service for $99/mo. on a dedicated card. i wish the article actually mentioned tasks accomplished and coverage areas, rather than an off hand mention of arizona. for me, this is the future... i want to connect anywhere with decent bandwidth!

  10. verizon on Life on the Road with 3G · · Score: 1

  11. reviews? on Transmeta Astro -- More Details · · Score: 0, Flamebait

i would love to see some real reviews which actually describe the performance specifically. i am looking forward to the chip, but right now it's next to vaporware. are chips out for review with nda's yet? i've googled--er used google--and have found only reviews from comdex.

  12. Transmeta 5400! on Transmeta Astro -- More Details · · Score: 1

the 5400 is only used in the fujitsu p1000--my main reason for not purchasing it. i really do love arm processors, and i do hope that the astro is successful performance wise, but this comparison is not helpful or thorough. the only available reviews of the astro are still from comdex, and these were qualitative. i do think that transmeta can create a market and be somewhat profitable. when was the last time that the most exciting stuff was not intel? now we have ppc 970's, amd 64's, transmeta astro's, mobile devices with arm's! the future is not wintel.

  13. connection on 2gbps Wireless Network Rollout this Summer · · Score: 1

my experience has been good in chicago. oddly enough evanston--northwestern u--has a crappy cell network, so my connection there blows. but, at home i measured 88k. connections are stable and i have not dropped any in 3 months of service. since i am essentially an ip address i block my tablet from access--security!... but likwise, if you are using a "secure" servic as opposed to telnet or something, you are secure--correct me if i'm wrong, i'm a lowly designer... the article states that new cards, drivers, etc have been added, so i imagine that most of the equipment is modular. it is essentially tdma afterall.

  14. Charges on 2gbps Wireless Network Rollout this Summer · · Score: 1

i would expect the charges to be similar to express network--$99.00 for unlimited usage. i am online 3-4 hours a day and haven't been booted. i could not get dsl in my area, but for double the cost i use wireless and get 88k. it is suprisingly useful and supposedly can go up to 144k. bandwidth can be overrated. being able to connect anywhere is very cool--almost anywhere...
